The Cincinnati Commercial
tells how the good iople of that
city are bamboozled by the politi
cal dealers -who run the political
game. According to that journal
the first tiling needed is a gang
composed of members of both par
ties. The gang constitute a ring.
The ringsters are especially zeal
ous. They are furious partisans,
foremost and loudest in party
work. The time comes for hold
ing the primaries. The ring has
possession of some of the offices
and wants some more. Actually
it makes no difference to the ring
trom which political side of the or
ganization the officers arc chosen.
In any event the spoils are equita
bly divided.
"We will say U. is a strong
Democrat and wants tlie great
office of the occasion that is, the
office where there is the greatest
opportunity for converting the
earnings of the many to tlie profit
of the few. C, being a vociferous
Democrat, wants the proper Re
publican nominated to run against
him. Now. j. is a Republican
ringster, and Ic and C. maintain
relations of the closest confidence.
They are, indeed, as thick as two
thieves. "We will say the Repub
lican primaries and convention
come on first. C, having things
fixed in his own party, so far as
possible, is deeply concerned as to
B. Now 13. is not actually a
candidate for the office, but,
under a ring understanding, he
ruus to help C, and is to be paid
for his expenses in currying the
Republican convention. Natu
rally, on the d&y before and the
da of the Republican primaries.
C, though a good Democrat,
noted for being red hot on the
smallest provocation, is one of
the most attractive of our citizens.
If B. is nominated by the Re
publicans through the servants of
the organizations in the several
wards, C. is subject to congratu
lation. He will proceed to use
the same crowd to obtain the
Democratic nomination. With
such an arrangement, whichever
way the election goes llto ringsters
win. They have a hen o two
eggs. One is sure to hatch. Per
haps after the nominations an
made, with the adjustment that
C, the Democrat, is to be elected
and B., the Republican, compen
sated for his trouble, the people
will rise in their might and smash
the slate. In that case B. is the
office-holder and C. is paid for his
trouble; and the office used for the
base purpoFes of the same persons;
and this sort of thing is usually
styled a reformation.
Ax invention for walking the
water was recently tried on the
Delaware river. The invention
consists of two miniature scows,
made of cedar, square at the end,
and slightly bevelled on the under
side for a short distance from each
end. The were fitted with sup
ports for each arm, which also
answered the purpose of assisting
in preserving an equilibrium.
The were also fitted with brass
rods, which were used as propel
lers, and to one was attached a
short rudder, with a cord reachinrr
to the hand of the pedestrian, by
which the course could be in a
measure regulated. These shoes
or floats were each seven feet in
length and fourteen inches wide
and one was attached to each foot.
When the adjustments were made
the man stepped into the water,
and started on his journey. On
account of the strong tide running
at the time, very slow progress
was made by him, but finally he
succeeded in accomplishing the
feat. The apparatus used by him
is the invention of Professor Row
land, of San Francisco, who claims
that he succeeded in walking
across the bay at that place, a
disiance of three miles.
The Minneapolis Tribune con
trasts the financial result of dif
ferent kinds of "strikes," in the
following remark : "John L. Sulli
van made more money in fifteen
minutes'Monday night by striking
than the Brotherhood of Telegrap
ers made in three weeks by the
same operation."
