War in the Orient.
A telegram from I-loHrkonr
says that on the 1 7th instant an
attack was niaile by the French
on Hai-Dzoung in the direction of
Sontay, a strong post gecn miles
from Hanoi. The French force
was '2,000 strong, ami the enemy
numbered 15,000. The position
was carried, but found untenable,
and a portion of the troops re
turned to the rsvor, covered by
ninbo:its, while the rest went in
the direction of Hanoi. There
have been terrible floods, causing
loss of life in the vicinity of Ha
noi. The French were divided into
three columns, 500 each, and
marched as far as Sonta3. The
right column then advanced along
the river bank, supported by gun
boats. After going five miles, the
enemy was found intrenched. The
gunboats fired among them, and
the intrenchments were carried.
The troops advanced to carry the
fortified village with bayonets, but
the defense was so vigorous they
were thrice repulsed. Toward
evening the French finding their
efforts were useless, decided to re
new the attack next morning. The
center of the column met with
faint resistance and occupied
Hanoi. Here thev wailed the
turning movement to b effected
by the left column. The latter
advanced alonir the road which
the late Captain Riviere took
Four hundred Chinese accompa
nied the column, winch reached
Hai-Dzoung and there found the
road barred by a strong intrench
ment. I he artillcrv then fired
into the works. The column ad
vanced with dslhculty, owing to
floods. The hoies were unused
to harness and refused to drajr the
guns, and the men took their
places in dragging the artillery.
When within three hundred vards
of the enemy's intrenchments, the
French opened fire. For a time
there was no return made by the
enem', but after some delay they
opened with a tremendous fiii!adc
which checked the advance of the
column. It was now manifest
that the position could not be car
ried by direct attack. A flank
movement was impossible, so the
French column retreated. The
en envy, shouting in triumph, is
sued from their intrenchments and
began the pursuit. They pressed
around both flanks of the retreat
ing columns. The French then
opened with artillery, firing shell
into the ranks of the pursuing for
ces, but the enemy continued to
follow their retreat. The French
preserved excellent ordr and
carried everything off the field,
including the killed and wounded.
At four in the afternoon the ene
my suddenly drew off. The
French column reached Hanoi at
seven in the evening, completely
exhausted. The center column
also returned to Hanoi. The right
column occupy the position which
the enemy evacuated.
The London Time correspond
ent at Hongkong, referring to the
movement of the French in Ton
quin, says the enemy, mainly com
posed of Chinese, were armed
with Remington rifles. It is be
lieved the enemy's loss is small.
French doctors complain of the want
of medical stores. The operations
of the French have been stopped
for the present, the number of
troops being insufficient to attack
Santo and Bochfuh, which are the
strongest positions in the delta.
The repulse of the French has en
couraged the enemy. Four thou
sand native Christians are bein
armed. The correspondent at
Hanoi adds that it is generally ad
mitted that the French will require
a force of 100,000 men to be able
to cope with the enemy success
full'. The number of guns is also
inadequate.
Shakespeare uses more differ
ent words than any other writer in
the English language. There are
about 15,000 different words in
his plays and sonnets, while no
other writer uses as many as 10,
000. A few writers use 9,000
words, but the great majority do
not employ more than 8,000. Jn
conversation, only from 3,000 to
5000 different words are used.
The chatter in certain quarters J
regarding the nomination by the j
Democrats of "the old ticket" ;
Tildcn and Hendricks, has occa
sioned babble of an equally puorile
nature from the Republican side
of the house, suggesting that the
Democrats be allowed to hold
their convention first, and if they
do nominate the outraged pair of
'70, then let the Republicans
nominate Hayes and "Wheeler.
The one idea is about as sensible
as the other.
A dull sinnmer always stai in
something in newspapers that
must have something to fill idito
riai columns. For this reason,
our Eastern brethren are starting
the talk of reproducing in con
gress, a bill declaring an income
tax. One enthusiastic writer says
that "all who oppose this idea are
Republicans." Very well; put us
down in that list; the company
will be found satisfactorv.
The death of Comte Dc Cham-'
bord extinguishes the last hopes
of the French Orleanisls as ef
fectually as the death of the
Prince Imperial four years ago de
stroyed the expectations of the
Bonapartists. Through life the
distinguished Bourbon bore ntnousr
his adherents the title of llcnry
V, and held a regal court where
kingly etiquette was most punc
tiliously observed.
The governor of Kentucky has
pardoned a convicted murderer,
because after the commission of
the deed he had been "converted
and promised to be good. If that
does not occasion a pious epidemic
the Kentuclcians are unusually
hardhearted.
