'THB DBAD-BOTJRBON.
King of Praince for Two Hours.
Henri Charles Ferdinand Marie
Dieudonne d'Artois, Comte De
Chatnbord and Due De Bordeaux,
head of the elder branch of the
French Bourbons, died at
Frorbsdorf last Tuesday the 23d.
He "was born in Paris on Septem
ber 29, 1S20, and was consequent
ly nearly G3 years of age. He
was the son of Prince Ferdinand
d'Artois Duke De Berri, who was
assassinated in March, 1820, and
the Princess of the two Sicilies,
the famous Duchess De Berri.
Before the birth of the Count De
Chambord the only heir-apparent
of the elder branch was the Duke
Do Berri, father of the Count, who
had married Caroline of Naples.
The union of the Duke and Prin
cess resulted in the birth of one
female child, and as there was no
rival issue the Republicans and
Orleanists rejoiced in the belief
that the Bourbon branch would
become extinct upon the death of
the Duke De Berri. In order
that the branch of the family
might be destroyed forever it was
decided by the revolutionists to
assassinate the Duke, and thus
make a certainty of the possibili
ty. Accordingly one of the revo
lutionists named Louvel assassin
ated the Duke one night as he
was leaving the opera. Seven
months after the assassination the
Duchess De Berri gave birth to a
male child, Count De Chambord.
When the event was made public
the Bourbon followers indulged
in great rejoicing, while the re
verse was the result in the
camps of the Republicans and Or
leanists.
"The child of miracle," as he
yr&s called was baptized with wa
ter brought from the Jordan by
Chateaubriand and received the
title Count De Chambord, from
the famous castle of that name,
purchased for him by public sub
scription. The Orleanists and Re
publicans circulated rumors re
garding his birth calculated to in
duce the public to believe either
that the Duchess was not pre
nant'at the death of the Duke, or
that if she was, the child born was
a girl and had been exchanged for
& boy. The latter rumor was
credited as coming from a hi
Orleanist source in London and
tr&s believed by many for a loner
time.
When the revolution burst
forth in Paris, in Juty, 1830, the
Count was only 10 years old, and
although Charles X soon after the
outbreak of the revolution resolv
ed to abdicate in his favor and
made a proclamation under the ti
tie of Henry V to the troops at
Rambouillet, De Chambord owing
to the public ferment, was com
pelled to quit the country, having
been the monarch of France but
two hours. He spent much time
thereafter in traveling in Germa
ny, Lombardy, Rome and Naples
to '-complete his education. In
1834 he resided in Bolgravia
square, London, where he made
his political debut, claiming tho
crown of France and receiving in
courtly style Chateaubriand, Fitz
James, Berryer and other legiti
mists, in looo a compact was
said to have been made between
De Chambord and the princess of
the house of Orleans by which
the claims of the elder and young
er branches of the house of Bour
bons were arranged, but no at
tempt was then made to put for
ward a candidate for the throne of
France supported by both parties
In 184G the Count married Prin
cess Marie Theressa, eldest daugh
ter of the Duke of Modena. The
pair were never blessed with chil
dren and Chambord therefore died
without an heir to his claims to the
throne.
After the battle of Sedan and
the fall of the empire De Cham
bord addressed a proclamation to
France, promising if the people
would rally around him that he
would expel the foreigner and
maintain a true national govern
ment. In January,. 1871, he ad
irwwed a letter to all the govern
ments of Europe protesting against
the bombardment of Paris. After
the communist insurrection and
the meeting of the national assem
blj' in May of the same year, De
Chambord appeared in a manifesto,
endeavoring to dispel the popular
prejudices against the "traditional
monarchy." This was, in fact, an!
appeal for the restoration of the
"Uimv government. n enueu
with the celebrated phrase: "The j
world rests with France; the lime, j
with God." In another proclama- j
mation, dated at Chambord, July j
5, 1871, he assumed for tho first j
time in a public document the j
title of king. After the repeal of
the exile laws the court returned
to Paris and stayed for some time j
at Chambord, where many legiti-1
mists waited upon him. It was
now jrenerallv expected that a i
O -l ... 1
fusion between the legitimists
and Orleanists would take place,
but suddenly a manifesto from De
Chanbord, in which he admitted
universal suffrage and constitu
tional government to be right and
refused to "allow the standard of
Henry IV, Francis I and Joan d'
Arc to be snatched from my
hands." At the same time he an
nounced his intention of leaving
France and tht-.refore to prevent
further pretext for agitation. He
accordingly went to Geneva and
thence to Lucerene. In January,
1872, rumors of a fusion in tho
royal families were again revived
and some of the newspapers went
so far as to call the Comte De
Paris "the Dauphin," but De
Chambord set the reports at rest
on the 2oth of that month by pub
licly denying them and reaffirm
ing his fidelity to his principles,
one of which was never to become
the legitimist king of the revolu
tion.
On the following month a docu
ment, the text of which was kept
secret, but which was in fact a
programme of a constitutional
government, was signed by 280
deputies and presented to De
Chambord at Antwerp, whither he
had repaired to receive the hom
age of his subjects and the com
munications of his friends; but the
liberals in the Belgian chair
complained of the court's presence
in the country and he soon after
wards retired to Frohsdorf. How
ever, the fusion of the two branch
es of the family, so long delayed,
was at last accomplished in
August, 1873, when the Count
De Paris had an interview with
De Chanbord at Frohsdorf and ac-!
knowledged him as the head of j
the royal house of France. Dtir-1
ing the next few months the be-
lief that Henry Y was to be re- !
stored to the throne of France
spread all over Europe; but much
to the chagrin of his friends, the
Count in October of the same year j
addressed a letter to Count De!
i
Chesnelong, who had been the
medium of communication between
him and his adherents, in which he
expressed opinions so reactionary
as to render his restoration im
practicable. In this letter he de
clined to submit to any conditions
or give any guarantees. Although
the count has since issued several
manifestoes, his restoration has
never been considered except as
likely to result from some phe
nomenal condition of politics inci
dent to mercurial France. The
count has never publicly retracted
the opinions which deprived him
of the throne and the party that
supported him during the past de
cade has gradually fallen away.
With him ended the line of the
elder branch of tho Bourbons.

The Astoria Land Grant.
Ed. Astorian:
I see that you continue to advo
cate the forfeiture of the Astoria
land errant. Please ventilate that

grant was made, it might have
been right if the road had been
built then. The country will set
tie now faster, and a road be built
quicker if the grant was declared
to be what it is forfeited.
Besides the land has increased
n value ten-fold from what it wasj
when granted, and one-tenth of
the amount of the original grant
would be an equivalent.
If it is right to take that land
now for building that road, it
would be right in ten, twenty or
one hundred years, all the same,
Settler.
it is now the order that as soon i
as possible after tho gap in tho
Northern Pacific railroad is closed
up an exchange of stations be
tween the 10th and 21st Infantry
Regiments will take place. Tho
former regiment is stationed at
Fort Wayne. Mich., where it has
been for four years. The 21st has
been stationed at Vancouver Bar
racks, W. T., for eighteen years,
and has performed active service
during a large portion of that
time. It was conspicuous in the
Modoc, Chief Joseph and other
ware. Its commander, General
Henry A. Morrow, is a Michigan
man. The 10th Regiment per
formed garrison and frontier duty
in rexas oeiore it movea 10
Michigan, and has seen less active
service than the 21st. General
Henry B. Clitz commands it.
General Sherman, it is said, agreed
upon the exchange before leaving
Washington, and made arrange
ments for it while visiting the
headquarters of the 21st at Van
couver Barracks. The exchange
will take place as soon as the
movement, of the troops can' be
made over the Northern Pacific.
