English Investments In America.
English land owners are ex
cited over the proposed agitation
in the Untied States ajruinst Brit-
ish investments in Americ.ir! lands
The newspapers contain long dis
cussions on the subject. The ex
citement was started by despatches
from New York giving the history
of the recent secret meetings of
the American national league.
These telegrams stated that the
league had appointed secret com
mittees, composed of first-class ti
tle lawyers, to ascertain exactly
how many titles to land in the
United States are held by persons
who remain foreign subjects, and
report the names and possessions
to the league. The organization
is to issue millions of copies of
pamphlets containing all the facts,
to distribute, these carefully, and
to so arrange an agitation against
the policy of allowing aliens to be
come real estate owners in any of
the United States as to make the
question a part one in the next
presidential campaign. It is
thought in London that Fxrnell,
Sullivan and Henry George are
the direct inspirers of the move
ment, and it is feared that the ag
itation may become very serious
and troublesome. The ground
which will be taken by the agita
tors, it is understood, will be that
British influence is already too
great in American affairs; that
this influence shows a natural ten
dency to Anglicise the land laws
and landlordism in the American
Union; that the influence ought to
be checked; that if British aliens
are allowed to acquire American
real estate there will be a steady
growth of English influence in
American legislation, which may
ultimately prove inconvenient
if not dangerous in the
foreign relations of the United
States. It will also be pointed
out that in proportion as the op
portunities for investment are
greater in the United States than
they have been in Ireland will
the evils of a non-resident land
lordism be more onerous and
exasperating to the citizens of this
republic than they have ever been
to the people ol Ireland. The
questionable policy of allowing
the tottering aristocracy of a
foreign nation to reinvigorate it
self at American expense, and of
permitting the landlords of Eng
land to bolster up and perpetuate
the caste of Great Britain by al
leging them to drain to London
the profits of valuable holdings in
America will be deult upon and
appealed from. It has for a long
time gone hard with the landlords
profits have befn constantly
growing less. The disaffection
among the tenantry has been in
creasing, and the ability of the
leaseholders to pay fair rents has
been steadily on the decline. From
land-rich the English real estate
proprietor has changed to land
poor. It is difficult to realize the
vast amount of genteel povertv
which at present prevails among a
large proportion of the proprietors
of the smaller English estates.
The incomes of the large
holders have been shrink
ing so rapidly ami steadily that
for many years past the world has
been hunted over for relief. For
some time past the territory of
the United States has been recog
nized as the promised land,and when
the facts are made known, as the
national league threaten to make
them known, with surprise will
be absolutely learned the amount
of money which has been invested
in land in the United States by
English landlords who have no
idea of identifying themselves
with the country any further than
absolutely necessary to enable
them to receive their waning in
