Bccchor's Portland Lecture.
In reading the lecture deliv
ered by Henry "Ward Beecher at
Portland hist Tuesday night, one
is struck by the Beecheresqueiiess
of his sentences. Whether in
Portland or Plymouth, hn is the
same inimitable, broad minded man
whose wondrous brain can not be
fettered by narrow creeds. His
Tuesday lecture was fully up to
his usual style- J lis huigusge
hardly needs the assertion that
Beecher said it. His sentences
are like autographs and arc as rec
ognizable. His subject was "Evo
lution and Revolution." His lack
of orthodoxy is shown where he
says:
In the first place it seems to
disturb the veracity, and therefore
the authority, of the old Testament
Scriptures and men that are com
prehended in the narrow and ut
terly untenable theory of inspira
tion, namely, that the word of
God was dictated to some report
ers or short-hand writers that He
said one day, "come up here 1
have something to tell .you," and
sat down and wrote out, or the'
wrote it out under his direction.
In other words, the theory of lit
eral verbal inspiration of scripture
it run over that as a locomotive
runs over a frog. There is noth
ing left of it, and ought not to bp.
The old doctrine is the devil's
highway to infidelity, and the man
ought to be ashamed who has not
got over that delusion of 'ast
ages.
Of evolution he says:
I, for one, have accepted it, and
I believe that man has unfolded
from the animal kingdom. I be
lieve that in a score or two of
years there will be little difficulty
in accepting evolution right
through. 1 know there is some
popular feeling among men, and
is received with some revul
sion. Men sar they do not relish
the idea of being derived from a
monkey. Well, I would just as
lief have come down from a
monkey as anything else if I
have come far enough. One
thing I know perfectly well: I am
a great deal more anxious and
particular about where 1 am go
ing to. than where J came from.
Of original sin, foreordination,
infant damnation, and all the rest
of it he says:
Is it not unjust that I should be
cursed after 20,000 years have
passed by for sins that J never
had any part in? I had no divi
dend in them. I ought not to get
a dividend in damnation for them.
"Would it be right to punish the
posterity of a man for the sins
they did nor commit? After thou
sands of years theo!og3r punishes
men for the sins they did not com
mit. Oh, was there ever such a
mess theology has given as a jxt
tage to maul 1 would rather be
lieve that 1 had descended from a
monkey when I can say 1 am a
long way from the home of
1113' ancestors! I would rather
be a priest of a lunatic asylum than
a teacher of any such doctrine.
The theory not only has no sense
in it, but is uttcrty abhorrent to
me.
Evolution gives us a different
condition of things. 3 1 shows that
man has been growing and grow
ing ever since the creation, al
though it does not teach exactly
what we are to come to. Theology
represents God as capable of con
signing 1,500,000,000 people every
thirty-three years (which is the av
erage of human life) to eternal
torment, and that God, knew from
the bt-ginning that they would be
cursed; and God, knowing it, nev
ertheless permitted these innocent
people to be born into the world
to be cursed. Now, I say, that a
creator who loves to witness the
sufferings of poor innocent creatures
is the worst kind of a devil. Men
say that at the time of Christ's ap
pearance the scripture was to man
a broken law; and yet that law,
which is supposed to have been
broken, is itself a fable.
It may be said that this is
strange doctrine for a Christian
minister to teach, but Beecher is a
law unto himself, and the great
courage that sent him to Exeter
Hall twenty years ago there to de
clare to England the doctrine of
the Union, the same breadth of
mind that enabled him to throw
the gage down to the foremost
legislators of Britain who were
then upholding the Southern Ke-
bellion, impels him to give utter
ance to the doubts and denials that
fill the minds of millions who
would willingly believe if they
could but whose reason revolts
from the dogmas of a narrow past.
The Swedes are so honest that
in Gothenburg every one going
into the opera house hangs his um
brella, coat and hat on a peg in
the lobby, and never thinks of
asking for a check. No tickets
are asked at the door, and no
checks given behreen acts.

as soon as it demonstrates its ca

unwise to erect any permanently
high barriers. The problem rather
is to lower iliose barriers without
giving a shock to the established

natural resources of coal and iron
and raw material will eventually
bring prices down to where we
can undersell outside competitors,
then the tariff becomes useless. T11
some products we have nearly
reached that point already.

can know, that Tiiden is crazy af

being left unturned to secure that
end. Conferences are being held
daily at G re stone between Tiiden
and his trusted lieutenants, and
the sage of Gramercy Park is put
ting his best foot forward to carry
the next year's convention. This

alarm, and he is doing his lt to
patch up the broken places in his
fences.

general has seemed to be to satis
fy the better sentiment of the
country with his administration,
and to contribute in all possible

more successful than , could have
been reasonably predicted when
lie succeeded to the presidency.
He is probably wise enough by
this time to know that his chances,
if he really desires a nomination,
will be most helped by continuing
on th same lino.5'

throne, will have no scruples in

"that grand old man,"' owns con
federate bonds for which he paid
$100,000 twenty years ago, weak
ens American confidence in his as
sertions regarding his love for this
country and her institutions. The
fearless advocacy of such men as
John Bright is worth more than
the adulatory phrases of time
