ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY AUGUST 21, 19HS
"Why Suit Was Brought.
1 reference to the suit against
the Villard syndicate the World
says: ''Villard was attending a
board ineetinjr of the Northern
Pacific, of which he is prc&iceni,
and a reporter who called on him
was referred to Artenius H.
Holmes, couusel for this conjpany,
who was asked: 'What is the
history of the two companies?'
4Villard has for yeni-s had large
interests in the northwest. In
1S?0 the Oregon Steam Naviga
tion company was connecting
Portland with the Northern Pa
cific road, by means of two small
railroads; with intervening -water
navigation. A illard thought it
would be a good plan to make an
all land route between these
points, and for that purpose lie
and four or live other men bought
in a majority of the stock of tlw
Oregon Steam Navigation compa
ny, paying 50 per cent, of its par
value in cash, and for the other 50
per cent, giving shares in the Ore
gon Kail way and Navigation com
pany, which he formed. Subse
quently, at a meeting regularly
held of the first named company it
was resolved to sell out to the sec
eond company for $:),:? 00,000, and
the plaintiffs in this action, who
owned a one-tenth interest, which
had not been bought by Villard
and his friends, received their pro
portion of the shares of this pur
chase monev. That cut them out
from any further share in the prof
its, and as these profits and conse
quent value of shares of th'e new
company became very l.trge, ow
ing to the development of the re
sources of that country, they are
complaining that the3 were not
fairly dealt with, and seek to have
the sale set aside.'
'Did not Villard and his friends.
in the sale you mentioned prac
tically seil the stouk of one com
pany to themselves, as directors of
the other company?'
'That is about it, and we, on our
part, claim that it was a perfectly
legitimate transaction, iue gist
of this suit is to test the validity
of this sale. Thev have their view
of it; we have ours; and it will b
lor uie court to ceiermino me
question.' "
Big1 Business.
The Boston Herald, in a recent
financial article, says Boston cap
ital has done as much, if not more
than any other in building up and
developing the far west, and in
addition to previous ventures now
comes in an Oregon and Boston
enterprise, controlled in tills city
The nominal capital is $4,000,000
in $100 shares. Several hundred
thousand dollars have already
been subscribed in New England
at. 85 for the bonds, and a stock
bonus of the same amomnt at par,
The objects of the corporation are
to purchase, improve and sell real
estate property in Oregon, Cali
lornia, aslungton and Idaho
territories, and British Columbia
to construct and maintain drv
docks, elevators, depot buildings
factories, dwelling housis, higi
ways and railroads, and to do a
general steamboat, railroad and
commercial business. Its railroads
are in part defined by the building
of a railroad from Coos Bay to the
eastern boundary of Oregon, by
way of lioseburg. Should tha
road be built, it is not improbabl
it would connect with the Union
Pacific. The Oregon Short Line
company will give its earliest at
tention to the Coos Bay region
particularly to the vast forests of
white cedar. Then it will also de
velop the coal mines on the prop
erty which it controls. Parties
identified with this undertakin
are well known capitalists, whose
names it is not desired to publish
The leading Democratic news
paper of the United States claims
to have positive proof that the
Republican party managers bought
the majority vote in Indiana at
the presidential election of 1SS0
It fails to point the moral an
adorn the tale by definite state
tnents as to who were bought. The
presumption being that Rcpubli
cans would vote the Republican
ticket anyhow, the question rmt
u rally suggests itself: "Who
were bought?'' It cannot be that
the immaculate followers of Tilden
Kelly & Co., were politically so
duced, but it certainly does look
that way, if the charge be true.
"Potlach" Discontinued. FOR TILLAMOOK. I R . i

The custom of potlach is based on
