L. W. Poolo who has returned
from Foley Sprinjrs considerably im
proved in health, reports that Pete
Runey has wonderfully improved that
health resort, and that he is doing a
good business.

tho announcement of the marriage of
Geo. P. Wheeler and Miss Jennie
Hanna. The friends of the newly
wedded pair wish them a fair and
prosperous future.
Tho new schoolhouse is assuming
definite shape, and is now one of the
most prominent objects that greets
the eye from the bay. It is the in
tention to havo it completed and
ready for occupancy by the 1st of
October.
The London Grocer says: A bet
ter tono prevails in our salmon mar
ket, but there is no animation and no
important sales to report. Holders
keep their prices very firm, as they
consider we have now reached the
worst, and have confidence in an early
reaction.
Out of twenty-six visitors to this
office yesterday, twenty-four in speak
ing of the climate said it was tho finest
they had over seen, and tho variety of
climate they had soon was considera
ble. Astoria can not be beat for health
and vigor as well as other attributes
of happiness.
At tho regular annual election for
officers of the fire department there
were 72 votes cast, of which F. P.
Hicks received 71 votes for chiof en
gineer, A. A. Cloveland and J. G.
Charters received 57 and 4G votes re
spectively, and L. E. Selig 1. There
being no opposition an extremely light
rote was polled.
Thero is trouble on the Sacra
mento. Two fishine boats and their
crews were recently captured by the
patrol established by the California
fish commission, and a general melee
was the result. One fisherman named
B. Nicolas, was killed. The men
swear tkey will fish, and tho officials
affirm they won't.
Attention ie directed to tho "Ad
of Armee Dallam, who are the pio
netr manufacturers and dealers in
wooden and willow ware on tho Pacific
coast, having established their busi
ness in San Francisco in 1852. Their
assortment iB very complete, their
prices low, and they will deal squarely
by their customers.

The steamer Honita, which ar
rived Wedneiday from Nanaimo, B
C. is m trouble with the custom
house authorities. On the 24th of
July she sailed from this port for As
toria with a cargo of general merchan
due and thence to Nanaimo, B. C.
without clearing the custom house at
Astoria, and without having her
papers changed from enrollment
register, rrora JSanairao she came
to this port with coal. As vessels
under enrollment are not permitted
to go into the foreign trade, the cargo
and vessel are subject to forfeiture
under the law. The vessel is owned
by Goodall, Perkins & Co., tho cargo,
482 tons of coal, is consigned to John
Rosenfeld and the master's name is H

The condition of Smith was jes-

the part of the physician that he might
recover. The hospital, is probably
the healthiest place that he will find.
About fifteen minutes after he got on
board the boat to come to Astoria last

is about the best use he could be nut
to under the circumstances.

A Bad Boat.
What looked like a lung black box,
tapering at both ends, with a lead
colored box on top of it and a black
smoke-stack running up through the
middle, lay at a New York wharf. It
was Capt. John Ericsson's torpedo
boat destroyer, which, the inventor
thinks, will destroy vessels that are
imorecmablo to shot thrown asainst
their sides. In her gun, which pointed
out at her bow, about eight feet below
the surface of the water, was a long
steel cylinder. This was the projectilo
which in warfare would, be supplied
with a torpedo at the conical-shaped
tip, to explode on striking the side of
ship and blow her to pieces.

is so artfully adjusted as not to inter- j

to come to the surface about 700 feet
from the vessel, and they will pursue
a perfectly horizontal course for 500
feet at least. They will travel the
first 300 feet in three seconds or a lit
tle less. They weigh 1,500 pounds
each. In tho experiments thero will
be no occasion to use tho torpedoes.
The object will be to test the distance
of flight and the accuracy of aim.
Tho experiments hitherto havo been
conducted m still water, and the firing
off Sandy Hook will be the first deep
sea practice. Tho Destroyer has at
tained a speed of seventeen knots an
hour, and her fullest capacity has not
been reached. Although her hull
proper if almost entirely under water,
she is seaworthy, for everything can
be battened down and no water can
get into her. Blowors ventilate the
boat perfectly. AU her working ap
paratus is below water and it would
he next to impossible to disable her in
an engagement. If tho iron house
built on top of her and her smoke
stack were knocked off entirely it
would make no difference. She
would be as serviceable as ever. A
steel plato eighteen feet thick is setin
front of tho pilot's position to deflect
balls if they should striko there. Tho
pilot is entirely surrounded by iron
work, and looks out through a small
hole on a level with his eyes to get
his bearings. He am touch off the
gun when he gets in exact range, and
immediately back off to safety. There
is a dummy plug at the opening in
tho .boat where the projectile goes out.
This is shot away with tho projectile,
and a valve closes over tho nolo to
keep out the water. Only enough
water to fill the gun can get in anv
way, and this can bo quickly pumped
out by a steam siphon. So there is
no danger from this source. Thero is
no room to spare on the boat, but
sufficient for the uses required. The
Destroyer is tho only craft that shoots
a torpedo under water. Iveic iork

Dan Caatello's Circus-
Of the circus which shows here to
morrow, the Oregonian says:
Dan Castellcrs nickel-plate circus
drew a very large crowd last night,
completely filling the spacious tent.
It requires but an act or two to con
vince the audience that the show was
oue of excellence, not only in tho per
formances, themselves but in general
management and the stylo in which
they were presented. While thero is
much that reminds one of the long-ago,
many of the acts are really new aud
very attractive. Tho globe groupings
by Durand, Samuels and Evans were
exceedingly clever. As contortionists
the Hecley brothers rank very high,
and introduce much that is new and
startling. We have not seen an' tum
bling equaling that of Evans, Durand,
Samuels, Harding and others. The
trained horse Senator, introduced by
Dan Castello, is ono of the handsomest
horses that has appeared in our city.
As a trick horse ho shows wonderful
intelligence, and is a very attractive
feature of tho circus. His perform
ances are alone worth the prico of ad
mission. Chas and Lottie "Belmont
on the trapeze give some remarkably
fine feats. During the act, Miss
Belmont, while hanging suspended
hoi'd downward, lifts over 050 pounds
of humanity, and gains rounds of ap
plause. Aside from the excellence of
the performances, every one connected
with the show is polite and attentive,
being in snarn contrast in these re
spects to those who havo accompanied
circuses that have heretofore exhibited
in this citv.
Mr. Castello, as a clown, is well
known, and it is doubtful if his equal
is in the ring to-day. A matinee will
be given this afternoon, and we would
advisu those who desire to attead to
goearly.
