in Uk! person of Rev. Allen Tib
betts, wlio went to that stntc in
1824, and to Coldwaasr in 1S31,
preaching the first sermon ever
preached there in July of that
year, at his own residence. In his
77th year he narrated the lollow-
j ing synopsis of his life:
KT never swore sn outli, or took
a chew 01 ioimcco, or sinoueo a
whole cigttr. T never bought or
!:! a drink of whisky at brandy
fur mys-lf. I ?rer m-d or

kile"6r pla-ytnl a jpim' of itmrfjies.
In traveling ovir J00,0X miles by
public conveyauc, 1 nevr met
with an accident, r was n single
moment too lute when it depended
on my own exertions. I never
sung a song, or played a game of
checkers, billiards or croquet, or
any game ot enrds. I never
skated a rod, or struck a man a
blow with my fist. T rim repeat
more of the Bible than any mnn
living of whom 1 liavv any knowl
edge. 1 have given instruction to
more than 200.000 pupils. I am
the only man alive of the persons
wlio composed the first church in
this city and county. I have giv
en away more real estate in this
ciiv (Coldwator) than all its other
inhabitants. 1 preached for fif
teen 3'ears, al imvele'. more than
500 miles attending funera:s;j
all the salary J ever received;
was a pouiul of tea. worth o
eenls."
A . pa pan- in publishing the
above, added: ""We cannot im
agine just what his weakness is,
but are ready lo bet that he is a
terror in his line.1'
it will lie noticed that he said
nothing ;:bout the sisters of the
church. Perltaps but no; he
should not be wronged b' such 11
thought. Perhaps boric -racing or
base ball was his specially. The
old gent couldn't have been much
of a boy, not to play marbles, fly
kites, skate or sing, and really
sltould have mentioned some rec
reation titat he did indulsrc in.
JLast winter when it was discov
ered hops were scarce, the specu
lators at once formed a corner in
the article, which scut it up from
20 and 30 oenis to $1 50 per pound.
Br.ewcrs were compelled to ad
vance the price of beer in conse
quence. The increase in tho- hop
crop this 3'ear has caused the !xt
toin to drop out of the speculation.
The very best of hops are now
quoted in the eastern markets at
25 and 2S cents. .So there is a
strong probability that those who
held too long arc "out and injured."
