The Other Side.
Chas. Olsen, who has boon acoused
of deserting his familj' in Portland,
tells a very different story. He says
he came hero to get work at his trade,
being a painter; that on account of dis
agreement with his wife he offered to
take two of tho children, leaving the
youngest in her care; that three weeks
ago she came hero, and while here she
offered to give him charge of the chil
dren if he uaid her $15 a month; that
he said he would give her 20; at that
time paying her hotel bill and giving
her $18; and, that to do what he
thought his dutv in the case, he yes
terday took charge of tho children,
relieving tho mother of all future re
sponsibility concerning them. This
is his version of the matter, and to the
publication of which he is entitled.

How The Firemen in the British Me
tropolis Take Things Easy.
A Chicago man who has been to
London thus tells how they put out
fires there. "Near the American Ex
change, at tho corner, of the Strand
and Adelaide street, is tho Chandos
Btrect station of the Metropolitan fire
brigade. Here are located a manual
engine and a steamer and twelve or
fourteen firemen. One day I chanced
to bo passing tho brigade station when
a young fellow, all excitement and per
spiration, rushed up from the direc
tion of Drury lane and breathlessly
shouted: "Urry up 'ere! There's a
fire just breakiu' hout in Drury lane.
Look sharp, now!" The engineer
who was in charge of the place turned
to a group of firemen and said ' 'Arry,
put on your 'elmet and go see what it
is. .-rry proceeuea to aon me on
gade tunic and the 'elmet and started
off on a run in the direction of Drury
lane. He was gone perhaps ten min
utes. When he hove in sight again
he had his 'elmet in his hand, the
perspiration rolled from his flaming
brow, and he was puffing like a loco
motive. 'Come along,' he mauaged to
articulate, it's a sure-enough fire.
The engineer deliberately ordered the
manual to be hitched up, and while
one man went around tho corner to
get the horses, two others put the pole
in place and tho rest of the men put
on their tunics and 'clmets. When
tho team was hitched up they pulled
out and rattled away over the pave
ment to Drury lane. Do you know
what happened them? No? Well,
they got to Drury lane, found that the
fire had spread from an upper floor,
where it had started to a paint shop
on the first floor, and the whole build
ing was booming. Tiicir manual was
of no use under heaven, and they rat
tled back to tli station after the
steamer. When they returned with
tie steamer the fire had consumed tho
interior of the building and its con
tents, and there was no use for the
engine. So they quietly returned to
their quarters."
East of Astoria.
The collier Walla Walla, with two-
thirds of a load, stuck Wednesday
night at St. Helen's bar, and a barge
was sent down yesterday to lighter
part of her cargo of coal. As soon as
she discharges the remainder of her
cargo here, she will go to St. Helen's
bar and repeat last year's sluicing
operations. This work will take from
six to eight days. At Swan island
bar there is now twenty feet of wa
ter, and tho river is six feet abovo low
water mark. By tho middle of next
month, unless something is done, ves
sels drawing fifteen feet or over can
not reach Portland. Owini; to the
peculiar hard character of tho deposit
Swan island bar, the city dredge
alone is not able to remove it.
The United States engineer has
two dredge boats well adapted for
this work the Osgood dredge and
the clam-shell dredge. These can be
used advantageously in removing the
upper and harder crust, and the city's
boat following them up will work well
in cutting the channel to the depth of
twenty feet. But the government has
practically no funds. It will be legal,
and it is in the highest sense necessary
for the city council to appropriate from
the Willamette river fund, an amount
sufficient to pay the running expense
of the government boats. Even with
all three boats employed, the work
must be slow, because so much time
is lost in "ettim: out of the way of
passing crafts. It will be humiliating
next month whon the Northern Pact
fie is finished and the city is full of
eastern visitors, to acknowledge that
Portland has not enough public spirit
to clean her river. There are not ten
citizens who will object to the appro
priation, and the council should act in
the matter at next Wednesday's meet
ing. Qrenonian, 10.
