    ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY AUGUST 11, 18i
A Bh; Job.
Under the treaty with the Creek
Iudiaus in 18(3G, congress appro
priated 100,OU0 to pay those
Creeks who were lo'al during the
rebellion, for losses sustained in
consequence of persecution and
depredations committed on them
by those Creeks who espoused the
cause of the confederacy. Subse
quently, a commission -was jip
pointed to ascertain and report,
the character and amount of dam
ages thus sustained and with that
reckless liberality that usually
characterizes such bodies when the
government is to pay the amount
of awards, the commission reported
that the damages sustained
amounted to 81,000,000 and re
commended that the amount be
appropriated. Congress paid no
attention to this report, but this
fact has not prevented certain lob
b3'ists from putting forth efforts to
obtain the full amount of the
award. Last summer, during the
absence of Secretary Teller,
the attorneys presented their
contract to AsBistuul-Secreiary
Joslyn and secured the approval
of that oflicer, who was at the time
acting as secretary. - They failed
to secure the approval of Com
missioner Price and did not renew
their ciforts to secure the full ap
proval of the department when
Secretary Teller returned to
Washington. Nothing further was
done in this direction until after
the departure of Secretary Teller,
when the agents appeared at the
department again and urged that
the contract be approved.
In order to stop this effort to
obtain from the treasurer a large
sum of money to v.'hich there is
believed to be no claim whatever,
Commissioner Price, when the
matter was again presented to
him, wrote a history of the case
and protested against affirmative
action on the part of the depart
ment. The commissioner's vigor
ous paper was forwarded to Secre
tary Teller at Denver and a copy
laid before Assistant-Secretary
Joslyn for that officer's informa
tion. The character of the par
ties pushing this Creek claim, and
the fact that their efforts are made
only during the absence of the
chief of the interior department,
are sufficient to excite suspicion,
if not to condemn the scheme.
Tun Iiuhy anient says of sui
cides and the press: Some eight
or ten 'ears ago, at a convention
of Italian journalists at Turin, it
was resolved to abstain from print
ing detailed notices of suicide so
obvious was it that the hope of
such publicity was, in a multitude
of cases, a leading motive of the
crime. Such a combination among
American editors is not to be ex
pected, nor, perhaps, desired. But
the object of it would be gained
if the press would refuse to be re
strained by airy circumstances of
horror, or by considerations of
tenderness for kinsfolk, from its
duty of stigmatizing the baseness,
the poltroonery, the selfish cruelty
to others, of the suicide s crime,
as they deserve. K there is guilt
in contributing to the self-extinction
from the earth of such con
temptible lives, that guilt must be
shared by those whose verdicts of
"temporary insanity1' and whose
gush of sympathy over the "vic
tims of appetite" and their "sensi
tive natures" help to elevate the
suicide, for the moment, into a
tragic hero.
Doksey is caustic in his replies.
Retorting upon "Wayne McVeagh
he says:
I never saw a. man with the
face of a fox or the chin of a liz
ard that I thought it safe to trust.
I wouldn't give much for a fellow
whom you can cut in two and not
get a drop of blood from either
side. I'd wager you 100 that
you could lay "Wayne MacVcagh
upon the block of truth and slap
him in two with a cleaver, and in
stead of the warm blood of hu
manity would come the chilled
icicles of viciousness from ever'
artery.
Tim AUa says that a large num
ber of people are going to Califor
nia from Oregon and "Washing
ton Territory, "because of the
drouth." If that be so, and it
must be so or the Alia wouldn't
say so, then the. action of these
people affords a brilliant illustra
tion of what is called "jumping out
of the frying pan into the fire."
They are leaving- the occasional
for the usual.
