(I) ASTORIA, OSEGON: SATURDAY-.. ...AUGUST 4. The county occupauts. jail has seventeen The August term of the circuit court begins next Tuesday. The A. B. Field leaves for Tilla mook this morning; the Miles leaves next Wednesday. Freight for the outgoing steamer was yesterday refused at the O.R.& N. dock. The reason wa9 there was so much of it. The American bark Carrie Wins hiv, 994, Barrett master, 110 days from New York, is outside with a pilot on board. The Qwcfalep arrived at Seattle last Wednesday. She will run in connection with Jas. Williams' Tacoma cannerv this season. From Cathlamet comes a report that on Monday, a man named D. S. Mcintosh committed suicide by shoot ing himself in the head. J. F. Niles, a Portland real estate agent, is in the city; his headquarters are at Bozorth & Johns, where maps of Sellwood can be seen. Some of the butter now in the market tends to destroy the respect we naturally accord to age. 'Tis like the offense of Hamlet's uncle. The rush from Portland to the seaside is greater this season than over before. Every down boat is full, and the crowds still come. A young man named Roberts was killed by lightning near Eugene last Wednesday. Death from audi a cause is extremely rare in Oregon. An unusually large number of fishing boats are being taken from the Columbia to the Sacramento this season; about sixty-five altogether. The clouds hung low yesterday in a most tantalizing way and every little while it seemed as though we were going to be treated to the novelty of a shower, but so far it comoth not. Henry Doyle & Co., have the exclusive agency on this coast for the Wopdberry twines and rope, and also have on hand a complete assortment of needle brand, and palmetto twines. Miss Kate Powell, who has been pursuing her studies at the State Uni versity, ifl enjoying her vacation at home. She will return in Septem ber to complete her three ears course. The Oregon arrived in at two yes terday afternoon. Pilot Howes re ports a heavy thunder storm with in cessant lightning at an early hour yesterday morning. The Queen sails to-day. The killing of one Portland gambler by another furnishes to the Portland press and pulpit a fine theme for comment. The usual analogy bo tweon cause and effect seems, however, to be ignored. xnese are tne pleasant aays on which you eat cold victuals in the brush, and call it a "pic nic;" where everything is cold but tho water, and everytning is sour out the vinegar spilled in the preserves. D. G. Ross advertises his place for sale. It is on Blind Slough, about throe miles above Knappa, and com prises 160 acres. J. G. Ross, proprie tor of the Pioneer restaurant, can give intending purchasers full particulars The annual hegira of fishermen goes on, and next week will seo but few of those remaining who aro tran eient. A 00 a many have "one to Portland and the Sound this season but, as usual, the majority returned to San Francisco. There are few places that offer a greater variety in the way of fish food than do Astoria and vicinity. At present we have trout, shad, oys ters, crabs, and clams, which are highly relished by visitors from the heated interior. On Tuesday the 14th inst., the Odd Fellows Temple will be dedicated with appropriate ceremonies. Cards of invitation have been issued to the T&rius lodges and encampments throughout the state, and a large at tendance is expected. Ex-Senator J. W. Bones, is in the city. Mr. Bones was for a timo tks most abused man in the United States, because while in tho Califor nia legislature he would not obey tho dictations of Kearney & Co., but he survived it all and is now an architect in Portland. Superintendent Sloop has been informed that there are two vacant scholarships for Clatsop county in the state university at Eugene City. Parties desiring to avail themselves of the opportunity to fill these vacancies can be supplied with necessary infor mation by applying to Mr. Sloop. Furnished Booms to Kent. Inquire at Mrs. P. J. Goodman's, cor ner Jefferson and Concomly streets. Wanted. Immediately. Two good waiters at "Jeff's.' Wages per munui ana room. WkeA Tou Come to Atttoria and want a nice pan roast, go to Frank F ore's, opposite tne astoiuax office Young's RIvor Palls. The riven of the western mountains are becoming famous for the number and beauty of their falls. The foam ing cascades that leap and whirl over and around the bowlders and shelving rocks, iho long bridal veils falliug from great heights and melting into clouds of spray long before reaching the bottom, and the groat cataracts that rival Niagara in power and splen dor, aro all worthy of unbounded admiration. One of the most beautiful of these is the falls of Young's river,in the Coast Range mountains n few miles sjuth of Astoria. The water, icy cold and clear a crystal, runs through the rocky gorges, shadowed by dense forests, and suddenly plunges over a precipice and flows onward to the Columbia. The water pitches down ward a short distance upon a sloping mass of rocks, off which it rolls on three sides at onces, falling in a thin convex sheet to the bottom. This double fall iives it a most peculiar and pleasing effect. Hundreds visit Young' river every year to admire the beauty of the falls and to enjoy the sport offered by that delightful region to the ampler and sportsman. Wtrt Shore Should be Done. Astoria Aug. -1, 1833. Ed. Astorian: An additional reason for bulk head ing the front and Glling up back is tho condition of streets on piling. With heaving trucking lumber soon breaks, and to keep up bridges throughout the city will be an enorm ous oxpense. Besides in case of fires streets are destroyed aud travel sus pended. Tho streets should bo Gllcd up with earth. A plank bulkhead down Chenamus street from Main to Olney thence to the bank at West Ninth Btrect, would cost about 200, built two feet high providing it can bo dono by nailing plank to piles al ready driven. This ggems to bo of sufficient public importance for the council to order it dono at once at the expense of tho city treasury. Orservbh. Enforce the Law. The time for legal Gahingfor salmon on the Columbia river closed at mid night last Tuesdaj'. Salmon havo been caught since then, and it is re ported two canneries are still catch ing and canning. District Attorney McBride is in the city; his attention is directed to this matter. Tho law is very explicit, it was made, not for evasion, as some laws are, but for en forcement. This is something that requires no comment. The successful drama entitled "Come RiBe up William Roilly" is now being enacted on the west side of Cass street. Our neighbors to the south are now beinr propped up to conform to the new grade. J. F. Byrne3 and his company of specialists arrived on the Oregon yes terday. They appear at Occidental Hall Monday and Tuesday evenings and givo a combination of specialties including many new and attractive features. Reserved seats at the City book store. The dead body of Mrs. hL Banks' seven year old boy FrifHe, was found yesterday on the beach at the foot of Mam street. The little fellow had been missing since the morning before, and the inference is that he full overboard from the piling and was drowned. Tho funeral will take place from B. B. Franklin's undertaking roitmn at two o'clock this aft jrnoon. A San Francisco dispatch says that the value of the franchise of the Alaska Commercial company was recently increased by the assessor from 115,000 to 81, 000,000, and tho company had to pay taxes on the lat ter amount. They did so, but under protest, and now stato having no remedy against such injustice, it will be obliged to remove its business from this city and state to some other point on the coast equally convenient to its operations.
