ASTORIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY- JULY 29, 18S3
THE LATEST NEWS.
Railroad Completion.
San Francisco, July 2G.
"With the ad vanccment of the
Northern Pacific Railroad the
transcontinental war is assuming
greater proportion than ever, and
though the fact is carefully dis
guised, it is certain that the street
commisions being paid at present
are larger than have ever been
paid heretofore. And the war is
not to be confined only to passen
ger business, but the freight ques
tion is also being drawn in. The
Union Pacific yesterday appointed
a freight manager in this city and
a careful watch will be placed up
on the Central Pacific people to
stop their diversion of freight over
their Southern route.
ilIf the Central people cut on
the rates in favor of the Southern,"
said a gentleman immediately con
nected with the Union Pacific
3'esterday, "the Union will make
a like cut and go them one bet
ter.' "Where will the cut be taken
from?"
"From the Union Pacific, and U
necessary, the connecting lines
will .stand part of the loss. There
are great interests involved, and
if necessary, a bold stand will be
taken against the Central by all
the Eastern and Middle roads..
Let the Union Pacific see that a
cut has been mado and the music
will begin. It will at the worst
take but a -ear or two for them to
build an independent line from San
Francisco to the coast and then it
will be good-by to the Central and
Southern. I understand that Dil
lon is now contemplating such a
measure and laying plans for it.
By the way, the United States
Railroad Commissioner has re
ceived a formal complaint from
Dillon on the subject of diversion
of traffic, and as. it closely affects
the government, the matter will,
no doubt, be looked into by him
at the present examination."
Another significant circum
stance is that President Villard of
the Northern Pacific has, it is
authoritatively stated, bought the
property formerly owned by the
Clay street Bank at the gorn of
Post, Market and Montgomery
streets, and a large building will
be erected there for offices of the
company. The Central Pacific,
not to be outdone, will, it is saidj
also build a new office, centrally
located, for the transaction of
freight and passenger business,
their present offices being loo far
removed.
Off fur llio Yellowstone.
New York,. July 25. Ex
Governor Boutwell of Massachu
setts, ex-Senator Roscoe Conkling
and a few friends started yesterday
on their Yellowstone Park trip.
Rufus Hatch will take a part' of
about eighty persons on an excur
sion to Yellowstone Park, starting
August 10th and returning about
September 15th. They go over
the Northern Pacific railroad to
Livingston and thence by railway,
which is partly completed, south
ward to Mammoth Hot Springs.
The route homeward is not yet
fixed, the courtesy of a number of
railways having been extended to
the party. About twenty distin
guished foreigners are now on
their way from Europe to join the
party. Henry Villard will take a
party of probably 200 or 300 peo
ple to Yellowstone Park, starting
August 2Sth.

CniCAGo, July 21. Last Sun
day Rev. J. Spencer Kennard,
pastor of the Fourth Baptist
Church, took the occasion of the
Rev. Henry Ward Beecher's
presence in this city to deliver a
pleasantl- turned sermon combat
ing the views of the great Brook
lyn divine. To-morrow the papers
will publish a breezy brotherly
letter from Beecher to Brother
Kennard. It is, perhaps, the most
unequivocal statement of Beech
er's views ever made public. He
says he knows he is orthodox and
evangelical as to the facts and the
substances of the Christian rclif
ion, and knows equally well that
he is not orthodox as to the phi
losophy which has hitherto been
applied to these facts. He calls
himself a cordial Christian evolu
tionist becauso he docs not agree
with the agnosticism of Spencer,
Huxley and Tyndall. He believes
the animal part of man has been
evolved from beings below him,
while in his spiritual nature he is
the son of God. Man, he says, is
not sinful by nature, but volun
tarily. He does not believe in the
fall of Adam nor in the inheritance
of his guilt.
The ortIiern Pacific -Chicago,
July 24. The North
orn Pacific road is gradually re
ceiving all its rolling stock nocjes"
sary for the opening and proper
operation of its Hues. A few
days ago two great mogul engines
from the Baltimore Locomotive
"Works passed through here and
are now at Brainard. Heretofore
the company has shipped its
engines needed on the "Western
Division to San Francisco and
Portland, going by wajr of the
Union Pacific roiid. It is under
stood that the latter company
charged, the Northern Pacific road
$10,000 for the shipment of each
engine. This charge was so large
that the company decided to keep
all the new rolling tock ut !
Brainard until it could be sent
over the completed line.
The Northern Pacific has
addressed a circular to connecting
lines, directing them to prepare
and place on sale, in anticipation
of the opening of the road Sep
tember 1st, coupon tickets, read
ing from St. Paul, Minn., and Du
luth to all points on the Northern
Pacific, Oregon Railway and Nav
igation Company's lines, the Ore
gon and California and the Olvin
pia and Chehalis Valley railroads.
The Northern Pacific yesterday
commenced shipping Montana cat
tle from Miles City to Chicago.
The first shipment consisted of
fifty-six carloads from Miles City.

At an excursion on the Patap
sco, near Baltimore, Md., on the
23d, the morning boat took down
300 persons, the 2 o'clock boat
120 and the G o'clock beat 75.
This latter boat reached the pier
at S:20 i. m., and prepared to
take all hands back to the city at
once, as requested by Father
Starr. The excursionists, know
ing that this was the only boat,
dashed along the pier until they
were stopped by a gate near the
steamer. Some youths tried to
climb over the gate and a man and
boy seated themselves on the rail,
with their legs hanging down. A
too-sudden movement caused the
raii to break and the two were
thrown into the water. A com
motion followed and there was a
sudden crash and a chorused shriek .
Splinters flew in all directions and
about 200 people were struggling
among broken timbers in eight
feet of water. " Their cries weie
so loud that watermen heard them
two miles away. Those who wit
nessed the accident stated that it
was sickening. The moon had
gone down and the only light was
that shed by two feeble coal-oil
lamps. Some of the rescuers took
the barge lanterns and set them
on the wharf, where two of them
exploded and added fresh terror to
the scene. The people on the
barge threw life-preservers, stools
and benches into the water. These
struck a great man' persons and
knocked them insensible. Others
let down planks and ropes. In
describable hopelessness and ter
ror reigned. The shrieks, curses,
groans and prayers for relief were
heart-rending. Sixty were
drowned and many dangerously
wounded.
Hon. Montgomery Blaik died
at his residence in Stiver Springs
last Thursday morning.
