    ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY JULY 26, IBM
To-night "MySon-in-Law."
Tho ifilc i3 off for Tillamook this
morning.
Tho Henry Vttlard arrived at
Liverpool last Tuesday.
Rev. S. C. Adams, of Salem, is
visiting friends iu this city.
Bozorth & .Joints have disposed
of tho Xet'x route in this eitv to .7. A.
McCrea.
The A. Ji. Field will leave for
Tillamook next Tuesday morning, the
31st inst. -
The happy Seattleites have had a
shower, and they very naturally feel
elated thereat.
May Newton, of Sprague, aged
17, suicided with strychnine in Port
land last Thursday.
Arrangements are
about com
pleted to light the
post office and
custom house with gas,
The board of directors of the
Mechanics fair have begun prepara
tions for the October exhibition of the
association at Portland.
The attendance at the theater to
night will doubtless bo larger than
last evening as the play to be present
ed My Son-in-Law is a new one to
Astorians.
Tho Columbia is due this morn
ing. Among her distinguished pas
sengers is Donald Dinnie, the great
Scottish athlete who goes to Portland
to exhibit.
In the police court yesterday af
ternoon the case of the restaurant
keeper charged with alleged violation
of ordinance No. 531, was continued
till to-morrow afternoon.
Regular election for chief engi
neer and first and second assistants of
the Astoria Fire Department, will be
held on Monday, Aug. 13th, 1883, at
the engine house of Astoria No. 1.
The telegraphic strike still con
tinues. The Portland operators seem
to bo more resolute than soutu of their
eastern brethren, as the newspapers
there are unable to obtain any press
reports.
Tho semi-weekly boom was
sounding loudly yesterday, and rail
road termini, round-houses, stock
yards and the entire location were
mapped out. That the railroad v ill
be built is certain. All else is mere
conjecture.
Some of the canneries have
closed down, a large number of fish
ermen have left for San Francisco,
and tho fishing season is virtually at
an end. There will be no lack of
material in the matter of spawning at
the headwaters this year.
We are informed that Rev. B. S.
MsLafforty, formerly of Eugeno City,
has under advisement a proposition
to accept the pastorship of the Baptist
church at this place. Mr. McLafferty
was pastor of the First Baptist church
of Oakland, Cal., for six or eight
years, and is highly spoken of by his
friends and acquaintances.
Mr. C. J. Curtis, an attorney
formerly with A. C. Gibba, of Port
land, has located in this city in the
Odd Fellows building. Mr. Curtis
will practice in all courts of the state,
and give particular attention to col
lection of claims at Washington, D.
U., and collections generally, lie is
also a commissioner of deeds for New
York, California and Washington
territory. x
According to a native Indian pa
per, a curious form of gambling is in
dulged in regularly in Bombay during
the monsoon, certain shops being de
voted to the purpose. This species of
dissipation consists in betting that
ram win or will not iaii witnin a
given time, and is known as "rain
gambling." From the regular noon
day outcry in Chinese quarters hero, it
would seem as though something of
mat uina were going on here among
the heathen.
The Bonlta.
The Bonita is due from San Fran
Cisco this morning. She arrived at
San Francisco on the 18th inst., four
teen days from the Arctic, nine days
from Ounalaska, with oil and bone
from a whaling voyage. When the
news reached New Bedford, Mass.,
that she had arrived with a quantity
of whalebone, ivorv and oil, from the
San Frantfjeo whaling fleet, the oil
kmcs eave :T crand "blow-out in
honor of the enterprise of the San
Francisco whalers. 3Iany complimen
tary allusions were made to the energy
displayed, by Captains Goodall and
Griffith, and tho principal toasts of
the evening were for their- good
health and presperity. Something of
a similar character (a complimentary
dinner) was spoken of in San Fran
cisco by the agents of New Bedford
wnaiers, out the Homta s arrival was
soBudden and unexpected that lack
of time prevented. After discharging
her odoriferous cargo she was imnis
diaiely loaded for the Columbia.

Groat Speculators at Lunch.
A man with his moutk fall of apple
pie gesticulated wildly on the floor of
the Stock Exchauge the other after
noon when business was at his height.
A broker who thought that his gullet
was clogged with pie hammered him
on the back, and the general howl in
the immediate vicinity was stopped by
his alarming actions. As soon as he
could clear his surcharged throat he
found his voice, and began selling
right and left in one line of stock. He
was taking his lunch, with one eye on
the ticket and the other on the. pie,
when some figures that were jotted
j down on the tape caused him to for
get his check and dash out of the res
taurant like a madman. He wa3 on
the wrong side of tho market, and saw
a chance to cover.
When he had put himself in a posi
tion to feel that he was on the safe
side of tho fence, ho went back to the
restaurant, ate another piece of pie,
gave tho waiter a ijuerter and told him
to say his prayer every night on go
ing to oeu aim to cover wnen lie was
long on a declining market. Then ho
bought a put, lighted a cigar, and for
half an hour blow big rings of smoke
up to the ceiling. He smiled at every
one who came in, and said the market
was going to the dogs, rode homo in a
cab, and in the evening informed
his friends that ho was 20,000
better oil' than he was iu
the morning. When times arc ex
citing on the exchange a broker can
hardly get his lunch. He has to take
advantage of a lull, and while he is
out things may start up again. He
must keep close watch on the ticker,
and if the figures go his way or against
him he has to abandon his lunch in
the middle of it to reap the benefit or
take measures to protect himself.
The great operators lunch as well
as the lesser lights. Jay Gould takes
his lunch at his office. No. 71, Broad
way, and sometimes in his office in
the Western Union building, at one
or half-past one o'clock. It is always
light. It consists of consomme or
some other light soup, toast, fruit and
tea. When in consultation with a
number of gentlemen, Mr. Gould
orders a more extensive spread, but
he never eats heartily himself. His
breakfast and dinners are his substan
tial meals. His lunch is sent from
Delmonico's, and the waiters, who are
the same the year round, are remem
bered at Christmas time. Washing
ton E Connor, Mr. Gould's partner
and manager, takes coffee and eats
whatever suits his fancy. He is quite
fond of game. He eats and trans
acts business at the same time. Bus
sell Sage, the money-lender and tho
great operator in puts and calls, is a
wonderfully modest man in eating.
He will make a comfortable meal of a
five-cent sandwich and a couple of red
apples, costing seven cents in all. He
never risks ruining his digestion by
eating in a hurry. He may be all the
afternoon eatincr his sandwich and
apples. Occasionally Mr. Sage takes
a plate of oysters or a brace of chops,
with a bottle of besr, if his digestion
has been helped hv satisfactory re
turns from his puts and calls. Mr.
Sago is always said to show his re
spect for tho rules of etiquette by
stuffing himself far beyond his usual
capacity when at a public dinner or
asked out to lunch with other gentle
men. N. Y. Times.

"Our Boarding House."
A little girl's explanation of the
theater, given to a boy who had never
heard of one. is capital: "Oh, it's
where everything is the way it ought
to be, and the people do things that
make you laugh and cry; and they
seem to live all their lives, and yet
it's over in two or three hours.
And everything they say means some
thing, instead of being only 'how do
you feel?' and 'it's a fine day, as real
people do; and they tell you all they
feel and all they mean to do, just as
yon think when you are alone.
Then, when it's over, a great green
curtain comes down and you go our, ;
and there are people going up and
own the streets just as if nothing j
had happened, and it is so common I
and stupid you can hardly bear it. It I
makes you wish there were no real ,
people alive." Tho realistic present
tion of "Our lioarditifl House at
Occidental Hall last evening by Lcoti
ard Grovcr and his cojnpany, was one
which by its fidelity to "the wav
things otmht to be" would elicit the '
heartiest commendati&n of every girl
big as well as liltlo. Seldom it is that
an Astoria audience has the opportu
nity to fee the author of a play as
sume the leading role, and personate
. thewage the creation of his own
imagination. Mr. Grovers imperso
nation of "Colonel Elevator," will, of
course be compared in Astoria with
that of Sheridan, who played that
part in this city just prior to his de
parture for Australia. It is the opin
ion of many who were present last
evening that in his rendition of tho
character ?Ir. Grover displayed morn
intimate conception of its require
ments than did Sheridan. It is evi
dent that he gave it greater study.
In Mr. G rover's hands the character
is a most elaborate one, and is com
parablo to Fechter's "Obenreizer the
Swiss." The talented author and
dramatist whom our Astoria theater
goers had an opportunity to see last
evening, has the additional advatage
of a well drilled company who are all
good in their several parts. To-night
another of Mr. Grover's clever society
plays "My Son-in Law," will be
placed on the stage, and will doubt
less be honored by a large attendance.
If the doors are opened a little
earlier than last night it would be a
matter of mutual advantage. And on
the other hand if the audience could
realize that eight o'clock is eight
o'clock it would be more satisfactory
to those who go in time.
TTou lo Ztlalic 3Icn Handsome.
You all ajrree. that a "ood stylish
suit, well fitting, makes all men look
better than their old ones, yet there is a
class of men that can never dress well,
they don't know the art thereof. M. D.
Kant, our Boss Merchant Tailor, Hatter
and Clothier, has undertaken a task to
fit all men, from the bet Apollo shape
to the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and
meets with 'exponent success, but the
crown of his efforts are his excellent as
