ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY-- JULY '27,1883
The Railroad Situation.
The Astoria railroad projects
are moving slowly. The Astoria
and Winnemnccu railroad oompt
ny htill have under advisement the
proposition to build a railroad
from Astoria to the Willamette
valley if $200,000 subsidy is raised,
but have come to no decision.
We are positively assured that
Mr. Villard has nothing to do with
this proposition. Two or three
miles of water frontage has been
secured for this company atTanzy
point.
The Villard people have one
surveying party in the field on
the Nehalcm, but the operators of
this company do not indicate any
serious intention of building a
railroad.
The feeling is growing more
and more every day that the land
grant must be declared forfeited
and out of the way. When that
is done and the lands returned to
the public domain for settlement a
railroad is assured. Otherwise we
will continue to have, as at pres
ent, a little surveying for the pur
pose of keeping the land grant
from being forfeited, unless the
proposition to the Astoria and
Winnemucca I. U. Co. be ac
cepted. D'ye Hind
Even with us, who live in Ore
gon, it is not fair to chuckle over
the misfortune of others, yet it is
only natural to note the inconsis
tency of eastern journals. When,
last winter, The Astokian was
pleading for government aid to
remove the obstructions to com
merce at the mouth of the Co
lumbia, the N. Y. Sun contempt
uously said in substance: "Im
prove your river yourselves; are
you paupers that you must come
begging to the treasury?" But a
change comes o'er the spirit of
their dream. Frantic editorials
are appearing, saying that New
York Harbor is filling up: that
vessels drawing twenty-Uvo feet
are striking bottom daily; that
"something'' must be done; the
Sun thinks government aid should
be invoked. Can it be that the
New Yorkers are "paupers," "beg
ging from the national treasury."
Take your own counsel back. Im
prove 3'our harbor yourself, and
don't erpect that we of Oregon
shall stand any such nonsense as
the appropriation of government
money for eastern harbor. Trut?,
the world's commerce is delayed,
but what is sauce for the western
goose is sauce for the eastern
gander.
Since the 1st of July the trade
dollar has come into such disfavor
that it no longer passes at par.
The eastern brokers are buying
them at So cents, but government
officers advise parties to keep
them, intimating that congress will
at its next session provide some
measure for their redemption.
The trade dollar is intrinsically of
more value than the modern silver
dollar; it contains seven grains
more silver than the standard dol
lar and is a better coin. But con
gress never endowed it with legal
tender attributes, and it is not
even felony to counterfeit it. It
was originally coined for use in
the Chinese trade, at a time when
our currency -was paper, as a favor,
it is said to the bonanza silver
kings, who wished to find some use
for the product of their mines.
There are 35,000,000 of those big
dollars in circulation, chiefly in the
Orient.
Dousey threatens to sue several
newspapers for libel. Ye have
no doubt says the Texas JSiftings
but that Dorsey really needs
money if Ingersoll has collected
his fee, as there is good reason to
suppose helms; but getting money
out of a newspaper is rather an
uphill business,, as Dorsey will
find out before the newspapers get
through with him. Dorsey. seems
to think that his character has been
damaged to the extent of several
hundred thousand dollars, which
reminds us of what a New York
editor said about Mrs. Victoria
Woodhull when she, beinjr in
England, sued a London paper for
10,000 damage to her character.
The New York editor remarked
that if Mrs. Woodhull's character
had been damaged to that extent
it could not possibly be the same
character she had when she left
this country. r
The First Railroad.
In an article in the Boston
Herald concerning the celebra
tion of the centennial anniversary
of Solomon Willard, this veteran
promoter and builder of railroads,
the following interesting para
graph concerning the first railroad
built in the United States aj)jears:
Mr. Willard was one of the sign
ers of a petition, which was pre
sented to the legislature in Jan
uary, 1S2G, for an act of incorjo
ration to construct a railway to
Quincy,. from .the stone quarries
to Neponset River. Notwith
standing the opposition which this
project encountered, the act of
incorporation was granted, aadl
was approved on March -kh of
that year. The railroad was
built during 1S'26, at an estimated
cost of 100,000. This was the
first incorporated railroad in Amer
ica. It was at first operated , by
horse power. It is fact worth
noting in this connection that the
Bunker Hill monument is notonly
commemorative of the first great
battle of the revolution, but that
the building of the monument was
the direct cause ol the opening of j
tins country s hrst ratlroad. ihej
monument association lmd pur-j
chased a quarry in Quincy for the
purpose of obtaining suitable ma-.
terial for the construction of tiiel
monument. It was while consid
ering how the necessarily ennr
mous blocks of stone could be
most economically and safely
transported that the idea of build
ing a railroad was conceived, and
ultimately, successfully canried
out.
In boring an artesian well in
the Santa Clara valley, California,
the stump of a redwood tree was
met at a distance of 2S1 feet from
the ground surface. The point
where the tree was struck is Si
feet above tide water, from which
it is distant eight miles, and. the
depth a,t which the wood was
reached is much greater than that
or the water in the bay.
Rei'Oiits frosn the cattle regions
of Texas say that careful estimates
place the number of cattle driven
up the trail from that section at
000,000 head, an increase of 250,
000 over those of last year.- The
bulk of cattle will be driven to
Kansas, Nebraska and the western
territories.
