T. S. Jewett took charge of the
city auditor and clerk's office yester
day morning, relieving his deputy L.

merit relaxation.
Considerable comment is mado
on the fact that the talented Miss
Willard was refused the use of the
Walla Walla court houso by the coun
ty commissioners.
It is now nearly a week since the
rival Portland dailies have demon
strated the other's delinquencies in the
matter of news and editorials. The
heat may have something to do with
it.
Ruddock & Wheeler, whoso
handsome display of globes and gas
fixtures is one of the prominent at
tractions on Cass street, are now
ready to execute all work in their lino
and guarantee satisfaction in every
case.
Under date of the 17th, a New
Westminster, B. C, correspondent
writes: Salmon are running very
light, 30 to the boat, average weight
9 lbs. Weather very warm and the
river very low for July and hot
weather.
A game of baseball was played at
Ilwaco on Sunday, July 22d, between
the Astoria nine and a nine picked
from the Miles and Ilwaco clubs.
The scores stood 14 to 12 in favor of
Miles and Ilwaco. Scorers, J. C.
Darnell and L. A. Allen.
Last Sunday the Kalama operator
struck, and for a portion of the day
we were shut off from all communica
tion with the world. Yesterday
everything was working harmoniously
between here and Portland, but no
messages were taken for California
and the east.
Jas. Williams, of Tanzy Point, is
putting in an extensive plant in the
salmon canning business at New
Tacoma. Ho expects to begin abont
August 15th', the run usually lasting
from that time till the middle of No
vember. About fifty men will bo em
ployed in fishing.
The Oregon City Courier says
that tho editor of tho Willamette
Farmer has a pass over all the rail
roads of Oregon. From the syec
phantish style of other Willamette
valley papers it would seem as though
other so-called newspapers wore the
railroad collar too.
A dispatch from Victoria dated
the 18th reports. ''The steamer
Dolphin is in from the north with 1800
cases of salmon on board. The salmon
run at Naas and Skeena was still very
indifferent, but-good at Rivers' Inlet,
where the fishermen wore catching
from 100 to 100 to the boat, and at
Alert bay there are more fish than
can be canned or salted."
In the Pnyallup valley the hop
season this year will be early, a good
deal earlier than last. All the hops
aro now in full bloom, and picking
will begin the last week in August.
The picking season will last until
October first.and may continue longer.
From 0,000 to 7,000 Indians, repre
sentatives of tho various tribes, will
be employed in this year's picking of
the Puyallup valley product.
A party of young men from Val
lejo went to Astoria to engage in the

has returned to say that the others

strung up by tho vigilance committee,
another was in jail for arson, others

Short Weight.
In tho New York American Grocer
of tho 14th ult., is the following
charge about Sacramento canneries:
"A certain brand of Sacramento
salmon of the present spring catch has
come here of very short weights
cans cut down in size very materially;
tho difFcrence between last year's
pack of same factory and this year's,
being 73 ounces in each case of four
dozen, or li ounco3 per can. Is 15
ounces of salmon enough for a pound
can? Have you heard of any reduc
tion in the standard of tho Pacific
coast for tho current year Is not the
packer who sells light weights for full
weights without notice to the buyer,
bound to make a pro rata scale in
price? The California packer must
give his eastern customers a chance to
look at his goods before paying for
them, if he proposes cutting away his
can each succeeding year. And in
any case, their method of slight draft
on B L is a bad one, and must go,
sooner or later."
Sol Smith Russell.
"Let thosu now laugh who never
laughed before, and thoso who always
laughed now laugh the more," and
that's just the way it was last evening
at Occidental Hall with the largo au
dience who bubbled with mirth at
Russell's inimitable personation of
Tom JJilloivay, in "Edgewond Folks."
He is a genuine comedian, not coarse
or blustering, but with a quiet, innate,
8iiggcstivo humor that pays a compli -ment
to the auditor's imagination
and indicates tho way tho jest lies.
He doe3 not lay all bare, and exhaust
the springs of humor, but points out
the fun and let3 his audience enjoy it
or not as their aptitude exists. The
coined' itself doesn't amount to any
thing a3 a comedy. It is not so in
tended, but as a vehicle for tho dis
semination of 2'ujii Dilloiray's views
serves an admirable purpose. The
company was good throughout, and
the performance heartily enjoyed.
Tho J'oluris man will not be ap
peased. Ilis latest ofiort is to de
clare that when the war of the Rebel
lion broke out, the "editor of the
Astorian ran out of the service."
Oh dear, how this world is given to
lying. "When the war of the Re
bellion broke out." the unfortunate
individual who is now the editor of
The Astokian, was nine yenra old.
What next!
--It is related on good authority
says the Standard, that Alfred Ander
son, after his conviction of murder
said to a friend of his that ho would
never admit the commission of the
murder, but would deny it to the last,
because of his parents. He did not
want them to ever know the truth of
the crime, and if he denied it on tho
scaffold thev would always believe
him innocent. And he stuck to his
vow, to save them all the burden ho
could, though he died with a lie on
his lips.

About nino o'clock yesterday
morning, a man whom the present
scarcity of water had evidently com
pelled to seek a stronger beverage,
whilo walking out Wate" street, fell
off the edge of the street, about
where Ike Foster's place stood. It was
low tide, and a dozen persons rushed
to tho spot where he had fallen a
distance of twenty feet. He scramb
led to his feet, walked under the road

place, mounted on tho planks again
and went to the spot where he had

Levers of light, sparkling comedy
will enjoy a treat Friday and Satur
day July 27-28. After a successful
engagement of several months at the
Baldwin theater, San Francisco, the
Leonard Grover Comedy company
will visit Astoria and play two nights,
commencing Friday, July 27th. "Our
Boarding House," is the pieco selected
for the first night. On Saturday
night the company play "My Son-in-Law,"
a new play by Leonard Grover,
which gives the author and a clever
company ample opportunity to show
their ability in a peculiar line of
eomedy. The play belongs to the
order of outrageously funny pieces,
of which "Forbidden Fruit" was the
first presented in America. It is
based upon the perccadilloes of highly
respectable and accomplished gentle
men in "our best society" who do
not always like their wives with them
when they go out. It contains a
strong-minded woman, a hen-pecked
husband, a variety show dancer who
apos the laurels of an emotional
"tragedy queen" like Rachel, a high
ly decorous valet with an illuminated
proboscis, a silly wife who falls in
love with young men and reads cheap
novels, a rich young bachelor with a
volunteer crop of "wild oata" en
cumbering his matrimonial aspirations
and a dancing master who is jealous
of his wife. With theso ingredients
it is possible to have a great deal of
fun, and ours aro just the pcoplo to
enjoy it. Reserved seats at J. Strauss
& Co. N. Y. Novolty store.
School Fund Apportionment.
The following is tho apportionment
of the state school fund for etch coun
ty of Oregon, as mado by the state
treasurer, Hon. Ed. Hirsch. Tho
amount of money for each child is 70
cents, tho same as last year, but tho
total number of children last year was
only 05,219, which is S.8G0 less than
this year.

A Public Library.
Among the approaching if not the
present needs of Astoria is a public
library. Astorians constitute a read
ing community, as a public enterprise
it would be of great and lasting bene
fit, as a public convenience it would
be at once appreciated and maintain
ed, and as an investment it would
shortly after its establishment pay a
fair rate of interest on the capital. A
joint stock company could be formed
and about 5,000 books purchased as a
starter, the procuring of a suitable
room, and the employing of a libra
rian could bo accomplished without
much exertion. Few cities of over
5,000 people are without one of these
adjuncts of civilization, and Astoria
can certainly support such an institu
tion as we su"est.
The Olympia Courier says: "Tho
rush to tho land office, here, contin
ues unabated. All classes of entries
known to the land laws are made,
but timber lauds take the lead. It
seems as though every individual,
possessed of suificient means to pur
chase an eighty or a quarter section,
had determined to do so ar once.
Of course moat of those lands aro
soon bought by the mill companies
but large tracts are getting into tho
hands of eastern speculators, who will
realize handsome profits in the near
future."
