ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY JULY 24, 1F88
It is said that Secretary Teller
will decide the Texas Pacific land
grant question adve-sely to the
Southern Pacific.
The Villard people have some
two thousand acres of town lots
in and around New Tacoma. Is
it strange that the whole year is
taken up in considering whether a
railroad is to be built by them to
Astoria?
"Gkneual Gkaxt dropped dead
in New I'ork,' was the signal
agreed upon- by the striking tele
graph operators, and when that
was heard along the wires, 1-1,000
operators walked out and left the
ollices to run themselves.
Tin: export trade in fresh beef
is reaching unusual proportions
this season. Up to May 31st, this
year, G3,87S,970 pounds, valued at
$G,o30,GG0, has been exported,
while during the corresponding
period of 1S82 but 30,253,493
pounds, valued at $3,454,1JG was
exported.
The Panama Canal company
met at Paris last Thursday. De
Lesseps repeated his statement
that the canal would be finished at
the end of 1SSS. lie also stated
that the Chief Government Engin
eer would assume the direction of
the active work of the canal
which would shortly be undertak
en.
Villard, of the Northern Pa
cific, and a partv of guests leave
New Vork on the 30th of August
for the point of junction of the
traces, advancing from ca&t and
west, which will be in the valley
of the Little Blackfoot, on the
western slope of the main division
of the Iiocky mountains in Mon
tana. Wm. M. Evarts will deliver
the oration.
The next electoral college will
consist of 4.01 members. In the
Republican organization the pies
cut system of representation gives
two delegates for cverv electoral
vote, besides two delegates for
every one of the nine territories
The next national Republican con
vention, therefore, will consist of
S20 delegates, and 411 votes wil
nominate the candidates for presi
dent and vice-president.
A telei;i:a2i from Wimbledon
concerning the international rifle
match between English and Amer
icans, says the Hritish team won
the match by 4, points. The
grand totals were: British. 1,931;
American, 1,90G. Upon the con
clusion of the match th crowd
broke through the ropes. Earl
Browlow, in a short speech,
thanked the Americans for coming
to England, and he hoped the
bonds of affection would be main
tained between the two countries.
"The time is nigh," remarks the
Springfield JlvpublicuH, "when
using 'female' as an equivalent for
'women? will be as fatal as spelling
negro with two gs." The substi
tution thus rebuked is unnecessai v
and vulgar. ".Male'' suffrage and
"female" suffrage arc as inexact as
they are coarse and inelegant. N
one has ever proposed either. The
time will probably never come,
says the Rochester Herald, when
horses, dogs, cattle and other ani
mals of both sexes will be permit
ted to vote. We now have man
hood suffrage and Miss Anthonv
and her friends hope to see the
day when woman suffrage will
prevail. Through familiarity with
the obnoxious term under notice
many persons have inadvertently
fallen into the habit of using it,
but it has a coarseness about it
which people of refinement when
they give it any thought, instinct
ively.shriuk from.
