that Rev. J. V. Milligan would preach

toria Sr Willamette Valley Railroad

A quarter of a century has.elspscd
since these men associated themselves
together by this act. Many are num
bered with tho dead, and all have
grown old and silver-haired, and still
there is no railroad In Astoria; but the
time will come when ifcwill bo built,
and many of these old "pioneers" will
live to see this enterprise, started by
them twenty-five 3'ears ago, carried
forward and completed, and Astoria
take the place she is entitled to by na
ture in the commercial world.
Some Pertinent Suggestions.

Now would be a good time for tho
council to have Water street widened
ten feet on each side so as to make it
eighty feet wide and provide for any
further extension of that street, to be
of the samo width. Sqticiiioque should
be widened also, any ten feel. This
should be done at once, before tho
burnt district shall be rebuilt. The
water front should also be well
considered bv tin citizens and the
citv fathers.
Thore ia talk of the O. R. & N. Co.,
extending their wharf farther into the
stream. It is so far now that vessels
cannot anchor in front of it without
obstructing tho channel. It makes
no difference to what depth of water
a wharf shall be carried, it will cause
the channel to shoal alongside of
The channel in front of the city
is now too narrow and no encroach
ments should be allowed upon it.
The present waterfront line should be
strictly preserved and no person al
lowed to build beyond. Means should
be taken to prevent the sediment
from the shore going into the channel.
A bulkhead along Chenamus street
and Olney to Squemoque, thence east
along that street and Water street to
West-Sixth thence south to tho shore,
would have a great effect in arresting
the shoaling of the water front. The
expense would be nothiug compara
tively. Stout planks spiked onto the
piles from tho ground up two or three
feet would be sufficient for the present.

day. Such weather as this entices
one to call for a vacation, and take a
season of enjoyment. It must be
jolly fun to be well-to-do, to have
abundance of this world's goods and
not be obligod to work when one does
not feel like it.
Under date of tho 20th our wide
awake Jewell correspondent writes
that the surveying party in charge of
EL G. Hurlburt, moved camp on the
18lh and are now camped at Mr.
CahilFs place in Vesper precinct,
about forty-two miles from Astoria.
They went up the Nchalem in canoes;
it took hve canoes to carry tho party
and their outfit. They are makin
about a half a mile a day along tho
river. It. C. Templeman's expert
part' are on tho line between Jewell
and OIncy.

Tho Twenty-First Regiment.
A portion of tho 21st Infantry came
to this coast 18 years ago, and all of
it has been hero 4 years. Since the
last of tho 21st came to California in
May, 1809, regiment after regiment
has been here and gone. Tho 12th
Infantry came west with the 21st,
but tho gallant 12th has been nearly a
year disporting itself on tho pleasant
shores of Lake Ontario; the 4th
Artillery came out three years after J

years basking in the sunshine
and
gas-light f eastern civilization. So,
you see, regiment cornea and resiment J
goes, but the 21st remains. It has
been here so long that the time when
it came seems like the vanishing
point in the perspective of a picture.
Since it first saw the "golden shores of;
the Pacific" the war department has
been ruled over by seven secretaries:
and four division, four department,
and three regimental commanders
have come, commanded and de
parted. Tho 21st has out-lived
oven the Indian tribes. When
the regiment sailed up the Co
lumbia the Modoc was tending his
herds at the base of Shasta, and the
Nez Perce was living quietly in tho
peaceful valley of Iranaha. Where
are Modoc and Nez Perce now? They
have faded from the land liko the
snow from the brow of llood. The
Indian has gone, but the 21st re
mains. It is rooteil to the foil of
Oregon and Washington like one of
their fir trees. It has longed and
waited for the railroad. Tho railroad
is here, but even its mighty engines
have not power, it seems, to fear us
from our ancient habitation. But tho
21st will not complain. If there is no
money to move us, thero will be no
money to move any other regiment,
and wc should hare no right to be

A Public Meeting.

It seems to me that n public meet
ing should bo called at an early day to
consider the proposition made by the
Astoria and Wiunemucca Railroad
company, to build a railroad to As
toria on a subsidy of two hundred
thousand dollars. If that amount is
not raised we will see what amount
can be raised on condition that the
road be begun immediately from the
Astoria end, and that no transfer be
made to the land-grant company.
This should be done at once. Let us
try to get such a sum raised as will be
acceptable and push the forfeiture of
the land grant that now stands in the
way of a rai lroad.
