ASTORIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY-- JULY 22, 1883
A rnblic Inconvenience.
The present strike o the tele
graph operators has another phase
than that presented by the differ
ence of opinion between employ
ers andetnployes. It is the most
universal, most -wide spread, and
affects the greatest number of in
terests of any thing of the kind in
the world's history. There is not
a nookin the whole area of the
United States that is not affected
directly or indirectly by the ac
tion of he committee of ten who
clicked the signal from the New
York office last Thursday to every
telegraph operator all over the
country to walk out. The indus
tries and vast business interests;
the complex system of all our
modern civilization is so intimate
ly connected with the electric
wire, that the cessation of means
of instantaneous communication
has a palsying effect upon trade,
news, and all the. daily transac
tions of commercial life.
TnERE is some talk of an extra
session of the legislature to repeal
the present mortgage tax law.
Though -the law is an odious one,
yet we have too much regard for
Gov. Moody to suppose that he
trill call an extra session of the
legislature. " The surest way to
obviate any more such legislative
tinkering as was done last fall is
to give the laws enacted a fair
trial and. demonstrate their wis
dom or absurdity.. By January,
1885, the law will prove by its re
sults that it should be repealed,
and by that time there will be no
objection. Now, a repeal would
occasion grumbling from those
who must have events prove their
mistake, and the whole business
would come up again. "When the
law is repealed, let it be final. An
extra session would be a mistake .
At BMavel's dock lie two vessels
side by side, both loading salmon;
the one for Liverpool, the other
for New York. Though together,
their courses lie widely divergent.
Should the same low prices for
Atlautic freight rule that last sea
son sent wheat from New York to
Liverpool for thirty-seven cents a
ton, it is likely that some of the
cargo of the Hidbcrt may yet be
found on a London grocer's
shelves, alongside some of kbe
Troop's shipment.
Ir would be. odd if woman suf
frage should become the custom
in Great Britain sooner than in
the United States. That this is
possible is indicated by the vote
in the house of commons of 114
ayes to 130 noes on Mr. Mason's
motion to give the suffrage to
those women whose property
qualification allows them the mu
. nicipal franchise. So small a hos
tile majority must be a hopeful
sign for the friends of woman
suffrage.
