No. 97.
JTBEL-TATYR lines and
SHAPES. '
The principal lines of the hand
are easily remembered. The life
line, which runs round the base of
the thumb, the line of the head,
which begins. alongside of the line
of life (sometimes joining it), and
crossing the middle of the palm;
and the line of the heart, which
goes from one side of the hand to
the other nt.thc base of the fingers.
If the line of life- is of a ruddy
color, long and unbroken, extend
ing nearly or quite down to the
wrist line, it foretells good health
and long life. If it be broken in
any point it denotes severe sick
ness; if short, early death; if
double, it shows remarkable
strength and vitality. The lines
encircling the wrist number the
years of life, one marking
thirty years.
If a character like the sun oc
curs on the life line, it denotes the
loss of an eye or blindness; and
each cross or knot denotes some
misfortune or diJliculty, great or
small according to the size of the
mark. The little lines arc the
lesser cares and troubles. Wavy
lines in the ends of the fingers
or elsewhere, foretell death by
drowning. A crescent-shaped
mark below the little finger and
below the line of the heart de
notes insanity. A well-defined
short line joining the life line in
dicates marriage. If no such line
appears, the person will remain
single, unless there be a short line
or lines on the side of the hand
below the little, finger, as these
also denote the number of times
married. The lines extending
down between the third or ring
finger and the little finger to the
line of the heart, numher the loves
of; a lifetime. If but a single line
is visible, and that is deep and
clear, the person will love faith
fully and warmly. A long and
well-defined line of the head
promises intellectual power, but it
may be too long; as, if it extends
quite to the edge of the hand it
indicates too much calculation,
craft, meanness. It should end
under the third finger or there
abouts. If it is forked or double
toward the end it denotes decep
tion or double-dealing, though in a
hand otherwise good, it may mean
only extreme reticence or shyness.
When this line is very short and
faint it shows stupidity, foolish
- ness.
If the line of the heart is long,
extending from the edge of the
hand below the little finger up be
tween the first and second fingers,
it indicates an affectionate dispo
sition, and, also promises well for
the happiness of the possessor.
If it sends down short lines toward
the headline, it shows that affec
tion must be founded upon re
spect; but if these small lines go
upward, love is more a passion
and impulse. When the line of
the heart is broken, it denotes in
consistency. But judgement must
not be formed from an' one ap
pearance or line of the hand, as
there are many things to be con
sidered. We should look at the left hand
chiefly for honors, riches, loves
and misfortunes, and in the
right for whatever pertains to
health and length of days. All
lines, if pale and wide, tell the ab
sence of the quality attributed to
that line, or the existence of the
opposite quality. For instance, a
pale, wide line of the heart indi
cates coldness or even cruelty.
When the lines of the left hand
are clearest and ruddiest its pos
sessor resembles his mother1 both
mentally and physically.
In the practice of the art of
palmistry some knowledge of
physiognomy is of great advan
tage; indeed, the two sciences go
hand in hand, one supplementing
the other. This is wiry the shrewd
gipsy fortune teller scans the face
almost more closely than the hand
of her patron. A few set rules in
regard to the features and charc
tenstics of the human face may
well be added in this connection.
And first of all, the soul dwells
inHho eye; and the ability to
understand its language is inborn
with most people without having
to study it; but n few vords in re
gard to it may not be amiss. Very
quiet eyes that impress and em
barrass one with their great repose
signify self-command, but also
great complacency and conceit
Eyes that rove hither and thither
while their possessor speaks denote
a deceitful, designing mind. Eyes
in which the white has a yellowish
tinge, and is streaked with reddish
veins denote strong passions.
Very blue eyes bespeak a mind
inclined to coquetry; gray eyes
signify intelligence; greenish, false
hood and a liking for scandal;
black eyes, a passionate, lively
temperament; and brown, a kind,
happy disposition.
Of the nose A Roman nose do
notes an enterprising, business
like character; u long nose is a
sign of good sense; a perfectly
straight nose indicates a pure and
noble soul, unless the eyes contra
dict it; a iicz -retrousse signi
fies a spirit of mischief, wit
and dash; a large nose generally
indicates good mind and heart; a
very small nose, good nature, but
lack of energy.
Thick lips indicate either great
genius or great stupidity; very
thin lips, cruelty and falsehood,
particularly if they are habitually
compressed. Dimples in the cheek
signify roguerj: in the chin, love
and -coquetry. A lean face is an
indication of intelligence; a fat
face shows a person inclined to
falsehood.
Irascibility is accompanied by
an erect posture, open nostrils,
moist temples, displaying superfi
cial veins, which stand out and
throb under the least excitement, !
large, unequal, ill-ranged eyes, j
and equal use of both hands. '
A good genius may be expected
from middle stature, blue or gray
eyes, large, prominent forehead,
with temples a little hollow, a
fixed, attentive look and habitual
inclination of the head.
Chehalis Valley Railroad.
The following notes concerning
the Chehalis Valley railroad were
furnished us by F. M. JSrown, who
has charge of the party engaged in
making the final survey, and set
ting the grade stakes on the above
road. The initial point of the
survey is on Budd's inlet, a mile
and a half below Olympia, running
east from there between Swan
Town and Olympia to Thunder
water; from there, keeping in the
vicinity of the Black river road, to
Mr. Young's on said river, crossing
the river there on to Mina prairie,
they reached the highest point on '
the prairie, 210 feet above sea-1
level; from Mina prairie to the'
point of the Black hills, through
Camas prairie, crossing ap-aiii at
H. Hunter's, nearly direct fromj
there to Mr. Gibson's. follnwinr
, n
the north bank of the Chehalis to
the crossing of the Mock Chehalis
in a direct line to Greenwood,
thence to Elma, striking it a little
south of Main street, on the sec
ond bench, on about the level of
Montesano, due west from Elma
to the crossing of the Satsop just
above the ferry, a little south of
west from there to"a point a little
east from this place, where they
will rest for the present. Mr.
Brown is now engaged in select
ing a crossing of the Chehalis at
this place; up to this time he has
not fully decided where it will be
After reaching Elma the road-bed
will be almost a perfect level. The
distance from the initial point by
the survey, to Montesano is 47
miles, and after leaving Tumwa
ter they found but one bad place
on the road; at a point eight miles
above Elma there will be quite a
job of cutting and filling. The
rest is an easy job, with not much
work. Valley 1 "vfott.

Misery in New York.
Dwellers in the lake cities, or in
j any free and open city, with access
to the air, have little conception of
the suffering of a laboring popu
lation in Xew York. Xw
Vork has its sea breezes, but
they cannot penetrate the
narrow streets nor modify the
retained heat of the brick walis.
They are literally ovens, where the
baking is done not by direct fire
but by radiating heat. A Xew
York physician says the best place
in the world to bake a baby is
New York. They melt away
every summer. People are so
thick in the tenement houses that
they breed discomfort antl disease
and inflict them upon one another.'
There is no water on the upper,
floors; or if there is it is tepid. In j
small rooms six, eight or even ten j
people are huddled, and they can
not get a draft by opening their
doors through. They are hard
working people, tired out at night,
and the irritated children keep
them awake. The streets and
roofs arc thronged with women
striving for a breath of fresh air.
Sometimes the mother falls asleep
from sheer exhaustion, and police
men have rescued their babies
from the gutter in which the little
ones tumbled from the mother's
relaxed arms. The vermin swarm
on hot nights with special viru
lence. Exasperated by the heat,
the vermin and want of rest, the
inmates of these places quarrel,
and oltcn come to blows. The
promiscuity oi the sexes driven in
to a herd to sleep or rest, is the
source of immorality.
