but it sadly upsets the performers and

The Oceanic Steamship company's
now steamer Mariposa, arrived at
San FranciBco last Sunday, 57 days 2
hours from Philadelphia, via Rio de
Janeiro and Valparaiso, her total
running time being 47 days 12 hours.
Her time from Philadelphia is the
best on record.

prayer for rain was read. To this
prayer those parishioners whoso hay
had just been cut raised an objection
and offered counter prayers for dry
weather. Thus far the dry prayer

On yesterday's boat John Wil
liamson, Jr., was taken to the insane
asylum, having been adjudged insane
by a board of medical examiners.
He is only twenty-one years of ago
and showed symptoms of insanity 1
short time ago. On Wednesday he
was exceedingly violent, requiring
personal restraint to keep him from
injuring himself.
Loss of the Sheet Anchor.
The

lost off one of the islands of the Sa
moan group some time since. A
terrific Btorm arose, and the brig and
a number of schooners went aground,
the schooner Solide "being a total loss,
and other vessels much injured. The
Sheet Ancltor was pwned by Messrs.
"Wightman & Kustel, of San Fran
cisco, valued at $0,000 and uninsured,
There was an insurance of $3,500 on
her cargo in the Sun Insurance com
pany, of San Francisco. This i3
total loss as the vessel arrived there
on March 23d and was lost on the fol
lowing night. The schooner Yavao
was built at Eureka and owned by the
Kustel Brothers. She has been got
off and iB on her way to Sap Francisco,
Tho Sliett Anchor has been plying
these waters a quarter of a century at
least, and was perhaps more generally
known than any other vessel

No one act of Mayor Ktowell lias
caused su much comment as his orucr
to close saloons at midnight, and the
result f the order is watched by
cities all over the couiilrv with inucli
interest. Wo fear that the mayor has

being drunk after midnight. There ia
no nioro comparison between an ordi
nary afiornoon drunk and a drunk
after mmnight, than there is betweou
liver and quail on toant. That's what
a drunkard of over thirty yonra stand-
! ing tolls us. He xiys, that an aftor-
Inocn or an evening drunk is very
lame, because the drunken man is
constantly haunted by the foar that
he will meet somebody who knows
him and who is sober. But after
midnight he can stagger about and be
monarch of all ho surveys. After
midnight he disturbs nobody but the
policeman and night watchman.and he
can whoop it up to his heart'3 con
tent. If he feols that he can enjoy
himself by throwing a beer keg
through a saloon window, a crowd
does not collect to uiplost him and
make him afraid. The mayor has
evidontly not taken into considera
tion tho enjoyment he is cutting off.
And by his order to close at midnight,
the mayor has destroyed, entirely,
tho effect of the national hymn, en
titled, "We Won't go Home Till
Morning." What party of convivial
gentlemen could have the heart to
sin" the old sonj around tho festive
board, when they know Jhat when the
hands of the clock point to twelve
the' would be bounced from the sa
loon, and become wanderers on the
face of the earth, with no friendhy
bar nt which they could slack their
thirst. Thus, the old song is wiped
from tho statute book, as it were, by
a stroke of the Mayor's pen. With
this midnight closing order iu force,
men have got to commence several
hours earlier to get drunk, if they ex
pect to accomplish the task before
midnight, and the major must know
what a hardship this will bo; and how
difficult it ia to rot drunk iu the
limited time allotted, where the beer
glasses are so small, and there is so
much foam in them.
Tho mayor will find, when it is
everlastingly tot. late, that some of his
constituents will be compelled to go
home comparatively sober, at twelve
o'clock, however hard they may try
to got drunk by the official schedule
time. The spectacle of men going
home sober, at 12 o'clock, who have
always gone home drunk a few hours
later, ought to melt the heart of even
a mayor. Such a state of disgusting
sobriety will cause strong drunkards
to weep, when they realize their hu
militating position. What excuse cau
a man, who has been in the habit of
going home drunk, along iu the morn
ing hours, make to Ins wife when he
comes home at such an early hour on
ly half full? Ho can lay it to the
mayor, of course, but a wife who has
become accustomed to such a state of
things will be apt to look upon tho
excuse as too thin, aud will ask the
husband why he didn't commence to
get drunk oarlier so as to have the
feat accomplished at the hour pro
vided by law. Women do not stop to
reason in such cases. They cannot
realize that it takes time to change
the combination of the drunkard's
system, so that it will get in its work
three hours earlier than it has been
set to operato for so many years.
This order of the mayor will prove a j
great hardship to many hard working
women. They have got in the habit
of sleeping early in the night and
waking up at three o'clock in the
morning te help their husbands in the
house and to bed. This order will
compel them to get up at twelve
o'clock, and thus they will be ao bro
ken in their rest that the labor oi the
next day, by which they support the
family and furnish money for the
husbands to get drunk, will be harder
than ever, it is plain that the mayor
never was a woman, or he vould
know better than to disarrange do
mestic affairs in such a manner.
There is no doubt tho mayor has
meant well by his order, but it is

Row Over a Poker" Game
About two o'clock yesterday morn
ing a poker game in upper Astoria
was iulerrnpted by one of tho J players
undertaking to carve his opponent
with a knife. The facts seem to be
that two of the playcra wore fisher
meu, who had lost some of their hard
earned gold to a man named Frank
Smith. A partner of the fishermen,
seeing they were losing, sat in to
make his partner's losses good by his
superior skill, and when the game got
noisy all emerged on tho roadway,

Canned Sturgeon.
Philadelphia's principal sturgoon
marirot is at Dock street wharf, where
any morning a dozen colored men,
naked to their waists, may be seen
butchering the monster fish. When
the heavy skin is taken off the desh ia
yellow and rich looking. A sturgeon
that weighs 100 pounds in its coat of
mail will weigh but 7a pounds when
dressed. The dressed tish sell at
from 5 10 7 cents per pound, and
much of the flesh goes to Trenton,
where it i3 canned and sold for salm
on. Some idea of the magnitude of
the trade may be had from the fact
that one firm on Delaware avenue
handle five tons of dressed atnrgeon
meat every day of the season. The
eggs, packed in hermeticalby sealed
five-gallon cans, are shipped to Ger
many, France, Denmark and other
European countries, where they are
made into caviare.
Something new in Navigation-
The ship City of Brooklyn is 2U
years old, and during these years of
her youth has apparently been well
behaved and of good disposition. Of
late, however, she has shown a dispo
sition to balkiness and does not
"come around" obediently. It is
oven said that she will not "stay."
Capt. Swan thinks that he has dis
covered the reason of the gallant ship's
disobedient conduct, and has governed
himself accordingly; he has removed
the figure head. Sea captains say
thej' never heard before of a figure
head interfering with the navigation
of a ship. This then is a nautical dis
covery and should be given to the
world. Navigation is truly an inter
