ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY ..7......JULY 20. 18S3
Artful Answcrinc:.
Ix his controversy with theolo
gians Bob Ingersoll usually "gets
anny' with all objection by som
ch'ferly devise 1 phrase. Rt-r V
H. Piatt, of Rochester, N. YM
formerly of San Francitco, has
adopted a method of reply which
places Mr. Ingersoll in as great
embarrassment as he has hitherto
placed clergymen in replying to
Mm. He has adopted the method
that Socrates was wont to use to
entangle his opponents. This re
ply to Ingersoll is in the form of a
conversation, in which assertions
are taken from In&ersoll's lectures
as his contribution to the dialogue,
and the Rev. Piatt answers these
statements one by one. One illu
stration will show how effective
this method is. Ingersoll says:
"Nearly . all scientific minds
admit that matter must
have existed from all eternity.
The universe is material." The
reply to this is quotations from
the works of eminent scientists,
giving their opinions on this point.
Spencer says that being is the
basis, not matter: "Wallace, that
will is the basis, not matter; Pro
fessor Fiske, that power is the
basis, not matter; Professor You
mans, that principal is the basis,
not matter; Dr. Carpenter, that
omnific mind is the basis, not mat
ter. Such an array of authority
against Ingersoll's assertion de
prives it of all weight.
The tariff question is received
coldly by the politicians. They
want it ignored. The two great
political parties seem afraid of it.
And yet it cannot be escaped
Republicans and Democrats are
free traders, and Democrats and
Republicans are protectionists.
The Democrats as a party seem to
hope that the settlement of the
tariff problem can be postponed
for several years. The Republi
can party is finding that more and
more of its members are leaning
to the side of free trade. The
fact is, that people irrespective of
party are studying this matter
and are determined to have it
discussed.
Italy is about to reorganize
provincial and district electoral
laws with a view to giving women
the. right of suffrage. The plan
proposed is, that the women must
be 21 years old, have possession
of full civil rights, be able to read
and write and be subject to a
minimum tax of fifty francos. The
women will be allowed, if they
prefer, to send their votes, written
and signed to the polls, where the
signatures will .be attested by a
syndicate.
ExTERPKisrxr; newspapers are
alreacty assuring Democrats that
they ' can count on "the solid
south" in 18S4. The N. Y. Sim
prints a table showing that by a
little political jugglery the Demo
cratic presidential candidate can
have 153 southern electoral votes.
All that will be needed to insure a
Republican success will be the
dissemination of such information
with a few speeches from Wade
Hampton at the proper time.
Columns of matter are tele
graphed relative to a probable
strike on the part of telegraph
operators. Sifted down the whole
business amounts to this: The
operators claim to be aggrieved by
the alleged action of the telegraph
company in hiring men at 875 per
mouth, to take the place of $100
men, 'and requiring operators to
work every sixth Sunday without
pay.
it will take 2U1 electoral votes
to elect the next president. Al
reauy laoies are Demg maue up
by ingenious newspaper men who
with & happy disregard for proba
bilities, place Oregon in the Demo
cratic column. Fancy the "Web-
foot state giving Tilden three elec
toral votes!
Sixer, the census of 18S0 itis esti
mated, and the estimation is not
overdrawn, that the population of
the united .States has increased
0,000,000, and. that the increase in
me unitea states ana uanaua is
at least 2,000,000 a year.
An authority in iron matters
says that not less than 5,000,000
has been diverted from Pennsyl
vania within the past two years
and invested in the. mineral de
posits of southwest Virginia.
