Enquire of
BOZORTHtJOHNg,
Dennis Kearney, the celebrated
San Francisco grammar-mangier
and wrecker of monopolies, has
appeared in Salt Lake City and
announced himself as a champion
of the Mormon cause. When or
how Dennis pretends to have been
converted, no one knows. The
only spiritual adviser he ever had
was his fellow-reformer, the luxu
rious and turbulent Kalloch, and
none have ever heard that Kalloch
leaned to Morinonism as a relig
ious theory, to be publicly pro
fessed and advocated, though he
has always held liberal views re
garding certain features of the
creed as applied privily to what
Beecber calls "the toss and swerve
of things material." It may be
that Dennis has absorbed as a doc
trine what Kalloch entertains only
as a fancy. That is irrelevant,
however. The main and signifi
cant point is that the great sand
lotter has pooled issues with the
Salt Lake hierarchy, and stands
outlined against the Sierra Neva
da horizon in his large, open-
mouthed style, exclaiming to the
nations of the earth, after the
manner of Lear, "Let copulation
thrive."
The decrease of population in
France, while all the other nations
grow in numbers, is one of the
modern census-taker's puzzles.
Another and much more painful
subject for inquir' is the large
number of juvenile suicides. That
old people, and sick and disap
pointed people should tire of life,
and should prefer the uncertain
ties of an unknown future to the
known discomforts of a .wearisome
strucrsrle, is conceivable: but that
children should make an end, and
should have so little faith in the
joys of living, passes comprehen-
n. Between 1870 and 1SS0,
only four years, 238
girls under fifteen
bovs and
committed
suicide in France. Hopeless must
must be that condition in which a
child can find no hope of happi
ness.
