    ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY....". JULY 14. 1883
Steekage passengers are now
carried from England to New York
for $13 each.
The Illinois supreme court has
decided that a contract made on
Sunday is just as binding as if en
tered into on any other day.
The Parnell fund in Ireland has
risen to over $90,000; in Chicago
it is Within a small fraction of 87,
000; in Massachusetts it has
reached nearly 83,000; so that not
counting Australia and districts in
the United States and Canada not
reported, the testimonial to the
Irish leader is over $100,000. It
'will be raised to $150,000.
Peof. Huxley, in an address at
the international fisheries exhibi
tion, pointed out that an acre of
good fishing ground will yield
more food in a week than an acre
of the best land will yield in a
year. Still more striking was the
moving ".mountain of cod," 120 to
130 feet in height, which for two
months in every yea.r moves west
ward and southward past the Nor
wegian coast. Every square mile
of this colossal column of fish con
tains. 120,000,0000, consuming ev
ery week, when on short, rations,
no. fewer than 840,000,000 of her
ring. The whole catch of the
Norwegian fisheries never exceeds
in a year more than half i square
mile of this "cod mountain," and
one week's supply of the herrings
needed to keep that area of cod
from starving.
American mothers have ac
quired some reputation for skill
"and energy in connubial manage
-jnent in behalf of their daughters,
says a writer in Chambev'ss Jour
nal. A Parisian newspaper some
time ago recorded an exceedingly
clever bit of match-making, execu
ted by an American lady of th is
order in brilliant style. Her
eldest daughter had sailed from
New York with some friends for a
tour of Europe, and. after "doing"
the continent had returned to the
French capital for several mouths
of rest and pleasure. Attractive
'-and clever, she had many suitors,
some more, some less desirable.
She could not marry then all, so
she adroitly reduced the number
to two the best of the lot, of
course. Then she wrote home to
her mamma, explaining the exact
situation of affairs, adding that
they were both so handsome,
agreeable, well connected and rich
that she could not decide be
tween them, and closed with
the question,. "What shall I
do?" Ten days later she
received a cablegram from mam
ma: "I sail to-morrow: hold
both till I come." The next trans
atlantic "steamer brought Mrs,
Blank with her second daugh
tor, just turned eighteen,
and fresh from school. On
her arrival the old lady at
once took the helm of affairs, and
"steered so deftly through the dan
gerous waters that in a few weeks
she had reached port with all col
ore flying. To drop metaphor,
she attended the wedding of her
two daughters at the American
chapel on the same morning.
After due examination she had
aeciaea tnat neither ot the nice
fellows should go out of the fam
ily.
