ASTORIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY JULY 8. 1883
Astoria's Greatest Menace.
TnE history of the first vigilance
committee ever organized in As
toria, as told in yesterdajs paper,
brings up a good deal that has
most intimate concern with the
growth and prosperity of our city.
The vigilance committee has
driven out some of the pimps and
vagabonds that hang around the
town, hut it is little use to break
eggs unless the nest in which they
are laid is also destroyed. Con
stituted as it is, it is in a measure
impossible to have a city without
having a concomitant of vice, but
in Astoria, the vicious element,
and the vice breeder is growing
faster than the social life of the
city. It is sapping our social
foundations; it is destroying our
young men and brutalizing older
ones; it is breaking down the bar
riers of social tone and weakening
the ties of social brotherhood until
it tends to subvert a great deal of
what we all hold to be true man
hood. Political influence has
pandered to it, the pulpit seems
afraid to soil its hands with it, the
people are becoming familiarized
with it, and it now becomes a di
rect menace to our growth, and a
shame to the better citizens that
allow it. While the surroundings
of vice in its most brazen form are
allowed to run in open violation of
the law what else can Astoria ex
pect than that the spawn hatched
from such slime will poison its bet
ter life? It is a shame that should
be given no reason to continue. If
this place is to amount to any
thing, if it is to be the beautiful
city we hope to hare, the founda
tions are being laid in rotten soil
and the fabric cannot stand.
Community of Interests.
"I don't want my liberty inter
fered with, I want to do just as I
please, I have a right to do as I
please." Just so, you certainly
have a right to do as you please,
for that is absolute liberty, but
you have no right to interfere with
any one else's right to do as lie
pleases. All have equal rights:
we believe a man has a right to
bo wrong if he wants to, but if his
wrong'entails infringement on his
neighbor's right, the wrong must
be stopped. "We have no sympathy
with men who want to coax people
to be good, nor with fanatics who
preach prohibition. As a theory,,
the idea is a beautiful one, but it
will not work. Nor are compla
cent addresses to approving au
diences of much- practical avail.
The matter amounts to this. There
is a community of interests; some
must surrender private wishes to
promote the general good; the
more those wishes interfere with
the general good the more com
plete must the surrender become.
A San Feancisco dispatch says:
Although the season for coast and
geodetic survey forces to be in the
field has arrived, no orders have
been received at the sub office
here, and the assistants are con
sequently in a state of masterly
inactivity, in which their time
is probably occupied reflecting
upon the glorious uncertainties of
official red tapeism. Not alone has
the appropriation been made to
carry on the work already com
menced, but the superintendent of
service has been importuned for m-
structionsand as yet has vouch
safed no reply. The instruments
used by the gentlemen in charge
of the office here are -covered with
.dust, as mute testimonials of their
lost occupation.
Naughty Republicans in Ohio
are reprinting Judge Hoadley's
fierce attacks upon the Democra
cy a few vears ajo. The fact that
the Judge wants those same Bern
ocrats to elect him governor next
October makes it embarrassinor
for him as a candidate.
The" highest tribunal in this
country is public opinion, and its
dooisipps are seldom wrong and
never reversed.
