There were ten fire alarms in
Portland on the 4th; fortunately no
damage resulted.
Piles were being driven east of
the Pythian Hall yesterday, for a
building to be erected by I. V. Case.
The canneries of the Northwest
Coast are reported doing very little,
and the catch is much smaller than
usual .
The Wkekl Astoiua.v, with a
complete account of the fire is out this
morning. Extra copies can be had at
this office.
-L. Mbrgenstern,the advance agent
of Janauschek, thinks tho great ac
tress can reappear in Astoria about
the 25th inst.
The steamers Costa Hie and
CVt ina have been sold by the Pacific
Mail Company to the Oregon Railway
and Navigation Company.
The stockholders of the Astoria
&W. R. K. Co., adjourned their
meeting yesterday afternoon to meet
on Monday, July 9th, at 2 v. m.
At the quarterly examination of
teachers held at the county superin
tendent's office June 29th and 30th,
the MiBBes Katie and Emma Connelly
of San Francisco, Cal., received first
grade certificates.
Portland's celebration of the
Fourth was in every way a success.
The parade, oration, eta, wont off in
gocd style, and in the evening fire
works and a banquet rounded out
in splendid style the festivities of the
day.
The county court met yesterday
and after granting two liquor licenses
for Seaside precinct and appointing
viewers for a road from Church's
wharf to the south line of township 8
N., 8 W., adjourned to the 10th inst.,
at one r. u.
There- is always a fresh stock of
worries arriving just about the timo
the old consignment is about used up;
the latest bit of pleasant news is that
the cholera is coming to this const.
The cholera is one of those nuisances
that you can't notify to leave town.
Dan Ingalls, of Chadwell, says
that on the evening of the fire he
distinctly heard the engines; his house
is thirteen miles from Astoria. His
neighbor, Anderson, who lives a mile
farther up the stream also heard the
puffing and surmised that there was a
great fire.
Oliver H. Cole is down here to
adjust the losses of the fire of the 2d
mat. He represents the following
companies: Liverpool, London &
Globe; North British & Mercantile;
Loudon & Lancashire; Hartford Fire;
Commercial Fire; State Investment;
Lion Fire; German American. He
makes his headquarters at A. Van
Dusen's agency where parties inter
ested cau interview him. Harry
Boyd, representing Hamburg &
Bremen, North German: Prussian
National, and Providence Washing
ton, Is also in the city. These gentle
men represent companies that had
risks aggregating 32,000.
By general orders each po3t com
mander in the Department of the Co
lumbia will ascertain by a competitive
trial, on or before September 1st, the
"most suitable marksmen of each
company, troop or battery, and one
from each non-commissioned staff or
band;" at his post, and report their
names to Department Headquarters,
with the scores made during the con
test and on the four previous practice
days. The marksmen thus reported
will be, ordered by their respective
post commanders to "Vancouver Bar
racks, to arrive there on or befon
September G, for practice and to com
pete on September 15, 17 and 18, for
tho honor of places in the Department
team, of twelve, and for the prize
awarded by the War Department.
The London Grocers' Gazette says:
For salmon the demand is not brisk,
but it is generally admitted that the
present favorable weather must im
prove the consumption and thus lead
to better trade later on. The Califor
nia Grocer and Canner comments epon
what it terms a systematic puffing of
Fraser river fish by the English trade
papers. The facts are that during the
past season English markets have
been supplied with salmon from the
Skeena and Naas and other rivers to
an unprecedented extent. Amongst
these, several brands show a marked
improvement ou tho usual Fraser
river quality; rind, although they are
certainly inferior to the best brands
of Columbia river, their presence here
ha(materially affected trade in the
latter.
The Fourth m Astoria.
About the first salute on the morn
ing of the Fourth was the tapping of
the fire bell at half past two . m.,
summoning the committee of safety
according to tho signal agreed upon.
The trouble was the refusal of the
proprietors of the new corner saloon
to comply with tho provision closing
all places of business at ten r. M. A
party of special police made a descent
on the place and after a lively inter
change of pistol sluti in which one
man was wounded in the log, Reilly,
Ginder and one other man, together
with a woman of belligerent disposi
tion uvre captured and plart-d in jail.
By early dawn everjone was "up and
dressed.'' A meeting of the commit- j
tee of safety was held at which it was j
decided to notify certain parties to
leave town. Printed notices werej
soon itirnnmeu the committee, each
reading: ''Astoria, July 4th, 1833, i
To , you are hereby notified to
leave Astoria, within 24 hours, not to
return. Signed Citizen's Committee.'
As the day wore on,tle city presented
a singular appear.mce. The streets
wore crowded; ladies in their best
array, and a large crowd f visitors
from the vicinity, tilled tho streets,
which were bright with bnnuers
and decorations. But there was
no attempt to celebrate. Ev
eryone seemed as though ex
pecting something, they hardly knew
what. At the slightest unusual
.sound there was n general alertness,
and as the day went by and evening
came on there was a universal sense
of relief that the day was over. With
praiseworthy prudence all refrained
from any setting off of firocrackurs or
other combustibles, thereby lessening
tho danger of accidents. It was a
singular day, such a Fourth of July as
wo hope never to see m Astoria again.
In passing along tho street one could
hear whatever he wanted to. One man
had been caught doing this thing,
another ninn had been captured doing
something else; the air was full of
rumors. All dav the special police
were bringing in men to the city jail.
At sundown, eight of the inmates
were marched up to the county jail
leaving sixteen there. .Shortly after
nine o'clock some of the committee of
safety visited vagrant haunts warning
parties who had not been previously
notified that a due regard for their
alth suggested instant departure.
Few citizens slept last Wednesday
night, and had there been any effort
on the part of the brutes in human
form who added to the horrors of
Monday's fire to make further oppor
tunity for plunder they would have
been summarily dealt with. On the
morning boat 3esterday went .several
who had been notified.
In tho stream, the vessels were
gaily decorated, and all the steamers
displayed a liberal supply of bunting.
The only celebration was the Ivnights
ball which was well attended. Ev-
eryono seemed glad of u chance to
rest, burned flesh, bruised musclo3,
sprained limbs and counties aches
needed attention, and altogether the
4th of duly 1SS: in Astoria does not
present a very brilliant painting to
hang upon the walls of Memory's pic
ture grtlJer'.

Two men, one named Fred Anderson
owner of a Gshing boat and his boat
puller named Pete , were drown
ed opposite P. J. McGowan's place,
Wednesday evening. Tho boat and
net were found in Mr. Mcuowans
fish trap Thursday morning. It is
supposed that they were lying at
alienor ami wore caught by some
drift and upset ; the boat was some
what injured. The bodies of tho men
were found in tho trap and brought to
this city y est orday morning. The In
neral will lake place from the Weston
Hotel at two o'clock this afternoon.

subsequent days. Families in the
vicinity who had packed up were busy :
moving back again, and whatever of '
value the owners ot the burned prop
erty could get was being removed

mittee was put around yesterday,!
ordering all persons having property :
other than their own in thoir possess-1
ion to leave the Eamo at police hcad-j
quarters for identification. This will
give any one an opportunity to return j
whatever they may have that does not '
come under their ownership, and avoid !
any trouble about it.
D. P. Thompson came down from ;
up river yi'steruay. He started on a;
tour of investigation, and found things '
t as bad as they might be. The j
oral of it i that in answer to a dis- j
patch U San Francisco duplicating
his order for iron pipe, the San Fran
cisco firm answered that there wasn't
mile of pipe procurable in the city.
This necessitates sending to Phila
delphia for the pipe, involving a long
delay and throwing the construction
of the works back. Mr. Thompson
says whatever men and money can do
will be done to push tho work to
satisfactory completion. He had
everything arranged to finish his work
at Bear creek on the 15th and begin
laying mains here eastward, but this
disaster puts a quietus on that pro
gramme for the present. He had
about nine mile3 of iron pipe on tke
O. li. N. dock. Of this about two
miles is still on the dock, the ends
arped, the heads bruised and the
asphaltum burned off. The other
seven miles is at the bottom of the
bay. It will be fished out as soon as
possible, but the chances are it in in
bad condition.
Though the losses are severe, in
some in3tauce3 sweeping away every
thing in the world the losers possessed,
yet thero lan t a single whimper.
E?ery one weouestioned yesterday said,

Not one said he or she was going to
ive up. Indeed the chief regret
seemed to be that the lack of facili
ties for sawing lumber will entail do
lay in getting out material.

business temporarily; A. G. Spex-
arth is going into Flavels now
building; Ike Foster, Luigi Serra,
Aug. Daniolson, and others will get
into active, operation again as soon as
possible.
F. B. Elbcrson has a few hats that
were carried into his place when some
of the department sent for their fire
hats Monday evening; mnybe you'll

:V. G. Spexarth says that if the gen
tleman who took his twelve volumos
of Appleton'-s Encyclopedia will kindly
return them he will feel greatly oblig
ed. His name is stamped up ii the
leaves thereof and he needs tho work
for reference. A Webster's Unabridged
would also be hailed with joy by the
samo owner.
The sawmill will not be rebuilt on
its former site. The company will
dispose of the logs :is soon as possible,
and may put in a- portable mill to
saw up sufficient lumber to build a
new mill. Nothing definite, however,
can be said as to the time and place of
rebuilding.
The insurance on the burned prop
erty was not twenty per cent of the
Yalue. The adjusters begin work this
morning.
