A lady in Vicksburg, Miss,, has sued the city for $9,07-1.50 dam agesfor rock taken off her prop erty. Dukes, the murderer, left prop erty valued at from 88,000 to $12,000, a great deal of it in west ern lands. The bodies of two ladies were sent to Washington, Pa., from New York, for cremation week before last. The English sparrows which have colonized Pennsylvania have been doomed by statute to ex-tfj-raiuation. The cost of profane expressions uttered in public in Fredericks burg, Vt., is $1.50 each, according to & recent decision. Lightning from a clear sky killed two cattle dealers at Bay, SL Louis, and melted the gold and silver coin in their pockets. Alderman Kelly, of Cincinnati, deliberately sho a wag named James Toal for exchanging hats with him at a fire engine house. A land sink occurred at the head of Swift Creek, in Hamilton county Fla., a few days ago , largo pine trees disappearing below the surface. Recently Geo. W. Humphreys, of Plymouth, Mass., obtained $10, 500 damages or injuries received in a collision on the Old Colony railroai. The readjuster school board of Richmond has passed a resolution to employ colored principals and teachers for the colored schools of ' at city, New York Policeman .Smith, v 3 slayer of saloon-keeper Regan, s roughly handled by the colo ur's jury, which finds he was not sufied in shooting. The commencement exercise of tne university oi lowa were marred by hisses and groans aimed at the salutatorian, in consequence of a quarrel among the students. John Dcvoy, editor of the Irish IFbrW, who has been sent to Blackwell's Island for libelinn August Belmont, is chief clerk to the night watchman of that insti tution. The estate of the late Governor Washburn, f Maine, foots up about 100,000, all but about 10, 000 of which will go to his widow and children, each receiving a fifth part. Frederick Lay ton, a porkpacker of Milwaukee, will erect an art gallery at a cost of $100,000, and give it to the city devoid of con ditions. He goes at once to Eu rope to select a suitable model. A largo number of young men hare recently left their homes in North Carolina to seek fame and fortune in the west and northwest, assigning as a reason dull tunes, and a discouraging outlook for the future. Dalryraple, the wheat king of Dakota, says the acreage in that Territory is fully one-half larger than last year, and the plants are so vigorous that an increase in the average yield per acre would not be at all surprising. A company has been organized in New Orleans to build a railroad to the jetties. The charter au thorizes tho company to construct warehouses, harbors, piers, wharves, etc., at tho junction ot tne railway with the sea or rirer- Five beggars, hailing from Je rusalem, were arrested at Mans field, Mass., June 20th, and were found to have $500 in gold coin, checks for $100 and a registered litter receipt showing that a large sum of money had been sent by them to Jerusalem. A western court ha decided that a passenger whose money is stolen while he is asleep in a sleeping car is entitled to recover from the company tin amount stolen, on the ground that when a company charges for -'sleeping facilities," it is bound to protect its sleeping patrons. Samoa and Its People. The Samnan group comprises nine inhabited islands, varying in area from 700 to two square miles each, the whole group having an area a trifle smaller than Yolo county and 120 square miles less than Rhode Island. They are all mountainous. Tn Apia, the prin cipal settlement, every aspect is pleasant and only nun is vile, nd there grovel the lowest ract of whites. The topography back of Saucelito well represents the as pect of the islands, with which na ture has been most prodigal in her I gins, me sou neing uuusuauy ler tile. vegetation running riot every where, the jgnutp being a perpet ual summer. The Samoans are models of perfect physical devel opment, resembling in their prime a perfect bronze statute. The whites have reached a depth of degradation allowing of no deeper descent. A prinoipaK reason for this is because night after uig-ht the writer witnessed 'JUtij girls chewing the kava. root, lite liquid which :s th national beverage. The oud i. placed in waW, and the liquid, after straining, is drunk, the writer having tasted it once before knowing the process of manufacture, and describing it of a soapy, slimy taste, like a solution of chlorate of potash, with as much pungency as dish-water. Smok ing, gossiping and keeping away flies were the principal industries of the natives, woman bping the industrious drudge and man the' petty aristocrat. The Samoan is j i : ..c : : S bin; vuj v j iiu.ii iiuiiun iu tnijMUYi- dence, adapting himself exactly to his environments. Even the bees stop gatheriug pollen after the j first year. The natives are com- munists iu practice, the most iu-! formal of mankind, of keen wit, j satire and perception, combining" the breadth and far sightedness of j the politician with the simplicity of the child. They are endowed , with little patriotism or public j spirit, are lightheaded and not! very affectionate, loquacious and j courageous in pure laziness, all ! bravery wreaking itself in words i and speeches. Chronicle. i A Dubuque, Iowa, special says: the result of the Republican state. convention was the topic of conver sation among politicians and busi ness men. The general verdict is that the party made a mistake in engrossing a prohibition plank. Conservative Republicans freely admit that the party is doomed for the next campaign at least and that the Democracy never a better chance of electing their ticket than next fall. xVll Germans not party politicians have left the Re publican side and will shoulder the issue with the Democracy in over throwing fanatical prohibition. The mistake is talked about b' knots of men on street corners and the wisest of them can only see defeat for the Republicans. On the other hand the Democrats say their time has come to niu in their ticket and are using even- means to that end. A Sufferer from Rheumatism. J limped about for years with a cane, and could not bend down with out excruciating- pain. Parker's Gin gor Tonic eflected an nctonisliing cure and keeps me well. It is infallible. M. Perhaps.the most acceptable theo ry to-day is the one which places the origin of the trouble iu the inner ear. The oar consists of three parts the outer of these runs iu as far as the drum; the middle part is inside cf the drum, and contain the chain of ear bones, while the inner ear is a complicated affair, containing the essentia! orjjan of hearing. As far as we are concerneJ, the inner ear is a membranous bag tilled with fluid, and situated in the solid bone. From the back pari of this ba run out three semicir cular tubes communicating at both their ends with the bag .or vesti bule. These run in three different planes, and arc lined with hair-like nerve-filaments, which are much more abundant and more sensi tive at the anterior part of the tubes. The tubes are filled with liquid in xvhich float little calcare ous particles, the otoliths. These tubes are known as the semicircu lar canals. It was difficult to see what connection with the sense of hearing these canals could possi bly have, and some time ago it was noticed that injuries to these impaired the sense of hearing iu no way, but caused most curious effects in tho loss of equilibrium. Popular Science Monthly for If you speak the right word at the right time; if you are careful to leave people with a good im pression; if you do not trespass upon the rights of others as weil as yourself if vou do not forget the courtesies which ii , . - oeionr to your position, vour are quite sure to accom plish mtn:h in life which oth ors with equal ability fail to.
