ASTORIA, OREGON:
THUXSDAT JUNE 28, 1883
H ITwkteff Class."
The Century for July has an
article oa relaxations and amuse
ments Kirioh aptly illustrates the
growing spirit of caste in this
country. Tke article refers to
utJe working classes" in a way
wikli aAsairen of this coast
soends faany. Scattered all
throwgh the article, which is a well
written one, are direct references
to ifeft working class." To an
Attacks, & term "working class"
ka ot the same meaning that is
girQ tie phrae in the New York
die of tle Century. Class dis
tinction on the Atlantic coast is
yearly making itself more appar
ent, and it is amusing to observe
the attitude taken toward what
oe oT our eastern contempora
ries are pleased to style "tha
working class." To people of elo
gaat leisure, to the degenerate de
fcoeadaats of a first generation'of
"working classes" who amassed
the substance that dudes enjoy, it
o deitbt affords amusement and
relaxation to languidly discuss
"the Tracking "class," but to the
earnest, go-ahead workers, the
sen and women who make the
country's wealth, and build up
communal as well as individual
prosperity, any discussion of "the
working class" as a set of pariahs
sees injudicious. Take "the
working class" out of American
"society" and-what is left?
Ik a recent review of "Webster's
work high praise coupled with ex
act justice is accorded the great
leader where is said: "Webstcr
stands to-day as the pre-eminent
champion and exponent of nation
ality. He said once, lThere are no
Alleghanies in my politics," and
he spots the exact truth.
He did not invent the Union or
discover the doctrine of national
ity, but he found the great fact
and the great principle ready to
his hand, and he lifted them up
and preached the gospel of
mationality throughout the length
and breadth of the land. In his
fidelity to this cause he nevjr
wavered or faltered.
His words passed into text-books
' "flflliP10 ne first exclamations
f phoolboys. They were in
every one's mouth. They sank
into the hearts of the people and
became unconsciously a part of
their life and daily thoughts.
When the hour came it was love
forthfe Union and the sentiment
of nationality which nerved the
arm of the uorth and sustained her
courage. That love had been
fostered, that sentiment had been
strengthened and vivified by the
words of "Webster. No one had
uuuo ao iuucu or naa so laroe a
share in this momentous task.
Here is the'debt which the Ameri
can people owe lo "Webster, and
here is his meaning and importance
i his own time and to us to-day."
Evxrt pulsation of the tele

railroad's progress, and the days
saay now be counted till that im
portant hour when the first through

roll westward over the line of the
N.P.Rlfc To Astoria the sub
ject is an important one. The
completion of the railroad will
alter our relations to the world at
large and the true completion of
the roa when a passenger can
board the train at New York and
step fro it.at Astoria, will place
oar city in its proper sphere. Per
haps it is just as well that day is
lo be Wsycd, a little. Astoria is
not quite ready for its exaltation.
Bosrox is to held a great expo

In Berlin a committee of dis

Dttkeef Hatibor, is making sure

A Cleveland, Ohio, special
says: "At noon,on Superior street,
to-day, with the street full of peo
ple, a man stepped up to a citizen
and said, 'I want your watch,' and
grabbed for it, but only succeeded
in breaking the chain. He then
walked cooly away. Tho affair
was conducted so nonchalantly
that few persons noticed it. The
citizen pointed the man out to an
officer, who arrested him. The
fellow gave his name as John
Black and said he came from Lon
don ten days ago, where he had
spent seven years in prison for
robbery, and was sent here by the
St Pllorlnr PtiMCtio r pnniatit T-Ta
-iv. N.sucilo viii labial. f3Wll&k jr . 4-41
said: 'Well, you see I had to be
sent from Portsmouth pris
on to London to be dis
charged. I was taken in hand at
once by the society and told if
I joined the society I would be
allowed C for good conduct in
stead of 3. I was on ticket-of-leave
for eighteen months after I
left prison and under police sur
veillance for five years, and when
the society wated to ship me to
this country of course T came at
once.' 'Did any other ex-convicts
corne with you?' 'Yes; four
of my -mates.' lA great many
men are sent to this country in
the same way, are they not?' A
good many. You see they don't
like to leave the old country, but
they are allowed more money by
tho government if they do, and
secure full passage from the Chris
tian societies. This is some little
inducement, but nothing in com
parison to getting rid of their ticket
of-leave and avoiding the police.'
The man was bound over.
A Washington special says:
General Sherman is a Yery un
happy man now. An army officer
who knows him well, declares he
is not what he seems in his bluff,
hearty interviews. In the first
place he greatly hates to give up
his position at the head of the
army. It has been his sole occu
pation against melancholy and
bitter domestic disappointment.
His is the very life of cer
tain "Washington circles. Ho has
always been a hero at every social
festivity, all over the country. It
is true that he is tired of Wash
ington and that he is anxious to
go to St. Louis. Soldo ir like, he
put a good face on the matter, but
this bluffness does not conceal
from his friends the deep seated
chargrin that preys upon him.
An account is given in
English
journals of the performance of a
locomotive on the Great Northern
railroad, which carried the Duke
of Edinburgh from Lees to Lon
don, 186J miles, in three hours, or
at the rate of sixty-two miles per
hour. This .speed has frequently
been equalled, and sometimes
passed for short distances, but is
remarkable as the average rate for
so long a journey. Tne engine
had driving wheels eight fyet in
diameter, or two feet larger than
the wheels of American engines.
To accomplish the trip in the
given time, the wheel must have
made 219 revolutions per minute,
or more than '39,000 in three
hours.
General George Crook is
about fifty-three years of age, but
he looks little more than forty.
He is about five feet ten inches
high, wiry as a greyhound and can
outride and outmarch any man in
the American army. It is a his
torical fact that he lived for three
days on no other nourishment
than tree bark during one of his
campaigns against the Indians.
He has a fair complexion, his hair
is straight and cut short, and he
has a large bushy beard, which
divides naturally in the center.
"Where the next National
Democratic convention shall be
held seems to be the leadinsr
question now. Those who claim
to be posted say at Chicago, and
that Tilden and Hendricks will be
nominated. Wonder if Wade
Hampton will make a speech
pledging divers and sundry things!
Seven hundred thousand acres
of the best lands in India are de
voted to the culth'ation of the pop
py. Five thousand pounds of the
opium produced is sold in China.
John Bkikiit advocates a redis
tribution of seats in the British
House of Commons, an extension
of the franchise and increased free
dom of trade.
Political prophets are begin
ning to announce the advent of a
third party. There is plenty of
room.
The Chicago and Northwestern
railway proposes to make the run
between Council Bluffs and Chi
cago in fifteen and a half hours,
provided it meets with the views
of the Union Pacific and eastern
connections. This will decrease
the time between New York and
San Francisco twenty-four hours.
With the reduction in the sched
ule to go into effect July 1 an im
portant reduction in time is made
for third-class passengers over
transcontinental roads. The time
between New York and San Fran
cisco is now seven and a half days,
instead of eleven and a half, as before.
