CZ r Thr 13 ai'" stcriim ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY-. . JUNE 26. 1&-3 6i fer tke'CuaHcrs. The statement furnished by Mr. E. A. Noyes, in reference to through freight to mid from Asto ria over the 'N. P. R. R., has a soet important bearing on the proSts and prosperity of the salaon business of the Columbia river. It means a relief from the 9 present tariff that practically places an embargo on Columbia rirtrfisk'in eastern markets, and opeos up a new field for the busi ness: At present, it costs twenty cents a case to get Columbia river salmon to San Francisco. That twenty cents exactly represents the advantage that the Sacramento canner possesses in point of trans portation east. Once remove the increased cost necessarily imposed tspon Columbia river salmon in the east, and the ability to lay it down in the great 'cities of the east coupled with the superior quality of the article, will give a tre nendous impetus to the demand for osr salmon. When our can nerymen can ship their salmon from Astoria' to Chicago at the same rate that it would cost to ship it from San Francisco to the same market, the present percent age that the Sacramento shipper possesses will disappear. The seasoa of S3 will see the last of Columbia river salmon, shipments east via San Foancisco. The com pany in making tho announce ment upon which we comment, exhibit a desire to give Astoria "a fair show," which is all she asks. It was suggested to us some time ago that the completion of the X. P. R. R. would hurt As toria's trade as far as the salmon business is concerned, inasmuch as the Columbia salmon would be shipped in refrigerator cars, and sent east in a "fresh" condition. Ine idea is not alarminr. Doubtless on the coeipierioB of the road, salmon will be shipped east in refrigera tor cars as a curiosity, probably as a luxury but no appreciable amount of fresh salmon will ever be shipped from here. Want t Know. In his speech at The Dalles last April, Mr. Villard said that the railroad company would soon mako & definite decision regarding the construction of the road down the Gc4ambia river, and the line across the Cascade range; that if the con struction of thes lines was not decided upon within a reasonable time, it would be to the interest of the company to put an end, at the earliest possible moment, of the holding under lock and key, so to speak, which has now been con tinued for twelve years, to the ti tles to vast areas of land in "Wash ington Territory and Oregon. uThe railroad company recognizes that its prosperity will depend more upon the development of traffic by the settlement of these lands than upon their contingent ownership. Whatever can be done by the company consistently with its trust obligations to the holders ot its first mortgage bonds and with a fair treatment of dona fi?c settlers, to open these lands to general settlement, will be done without unreasonable delay." A good many people down this way rBt to know about this mat ter. Probably when oongress seets, Mr. Villard can speak more definitely. It is more than proba lle that the'people can. Naturalized citizens have almost complete control of the press of New York city. Carl Schurz and E. L. Old Junk. Secretary Chaxdleb an nounces that he will sell at public auction thirty old and useless ships belonging to the Robesonian navy. Qne of the vessels which Chandler proposes to turn over to the junk deales is the Alaska. This is a wooden screw steamer of 2,400 tons, built 'in 1SGS. The Alaska is at present on this coast. This ship, now condemned to be sold or given away because she is "unfit for naval service," has cost the country $1,377,471, exclusive of ordnance. Secretary Robeson expended 6548,000 in tinkering her hull and machinery. Thirteen months ago Secretary Chandler reported to congress that the Alaska, except in the matter of guns, was "efficient to engage in battle with an enemy of the same general classification." The bu reau of construction and repair classed her as efficient, and not rcquirinc: the expenditure of a cent. The bureau of steam engi neering reported her as in first class condition. The bureau of equipment and recruiting made a similar report concerning her con dition. All that was needed for the Alaska was new ordnance. If the ship was efficient in May, 1882, the X. Y. Sun asks how does it happen that in June, 1SS3, sho is unfit for further naval service? The meanest dead-heading yet reported is in Portland, Maine, where the board of mayor and al dermen have voted themselves ad mission to all places of amusement free, and have decided to wear a badge "of some appropriate de sign," so that their identity may be known to the doorkeeper. Caitain Ead "proclaims to the world" that vessels drawing thirty feet of water can pass from the Gulf to If ew Orleans without trou ble, and therefore tin Crescent City claims to have a better har bor than New York. Tun returns it-sued by the Ca nadian Depaatmeut of Agricul ture show that 33,1G1 immigrants entered Canada during May, mak ing 71,293 for the first five months of 18S3, against 49,402 in the same period last 'ear. Tui: tax rate for city purposes in St. Louis is strictly limited to one per cent; and the only method of increasing the vity's revenue is that of raising the tax valuation. The Canadian Pacific railway is now finished from Port Arthur, on Lake Superior, to a point GOO miles west of "Winnipeg, a distance of 1,095 miles. Liki: the Suez Canal the East River bridge has more traffic than it can accommodate, and there are already calls for a duplicato of the structure.
