The arms and ammunition trade
in this country is delighted at -the
impetus that the patronage of the
Chinese government has suddenly
given to their industry. Since the
hostilities between Peru and Cnile
practically ceased there has been a
great falling off in the foroign de
mand for American munitions of
war.
The stagnation in trade has
not been so great for years as it
was last winter and some large
firms failed. The trade cannot
expect to do much if any busi
ness with France,-as that country
has immense facilities" for turning
out its own war supplies, but it is
said that some Americanly com
panies have recently sent agents
to Sapan.tto demonstrate the ad
vantages of buying arms and am
munition in this country when
such supplies are needed.
The secretary of the interior is
paying coifcsiderable attention to
persons who have secured govern
ment land by fraudulent methods,
and is prosecuting them with ex'-
ceptional vigor. He proposes to
recommend to congress' nil his
report next winter -the-necessity
of overhauling the land laws with
the object of placing such re
strictions upon the obtainment of
public lands as will stop the
wholesale and fraudulent grabbing
which has of late become notori
ously frequent.
A "W&tertown, N. Y., man, Who
has kept an account of the weather,
claims that it invariably repeats
itself, and gives the following as
the result of his observations, viz:
All years ending in 9, 0 or 1, are
extremely dry; those ending in 2, 3,
4, 0 or G, are extremely wet; those
ending in 7 or 8 are ordinarily
well balanced; those ending in G
have extremely cold winters; those
ending in 2 have an early spring;
these ending in 1 have a late
spring; those ending in 3 and 4
are subject to great floods.
Some sage has observed that
"It was better to-have lived and
been old when the world was
young than to live now, though
young, when the world is old."
Be that as it may, we would not
care to live in either age without
being insured against rheumatism,
unless we had a supply of that
never failing remedy, St. Jacobs
Oil. Mr. Joseph Fihe, No. 230
Preston street, corner of Walnut,
Louisville, Ky., says: "I have
used St. Jacobs Oil in my family
for two years past, and have never
found anything that it "would not
cure there must, of course, be
some limits to its powers, but I
have not reached it yet, and I ran
say that I do not believe there are
any .muscular ailments, nervous
ness or inflammation that it will
fail to cure. My boy Theodore
lell down and sprained his foot;
it swelled to two or three times
its natural size. I applied St. Ja
cobs Oil and in half a day he was
as well as ever. It cured me of
rheumatism anil my wife of neu
ral jria.
