ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY
.JUNE 21. 1883
The Seasea of '83.
Xeaklt three-fourths of the
time during which it is lawful to
ettch silwoain the Columbia, has
elxpsed, and it is now in order to
gtre a few figures in relation to
the present status of the matter.
Never since the first can of Col-
wVit salmon was packed, has
the ttuationbeen so complicated
as at the prept time, and at no I
period has it been more difficult
9 pre facts from which any prob-
.W induction could be made. At
.ti"bgiarilng of the season the
oaxers found themselves con-
fronted with a new factor in the
alre&dj abstras problem, viz: the
price of raw material; they had al-
rdjr4een cognizant of the high
price of tin, twine and all the rest
of tiMft necessary plant; they also
knewtbatevcry neighboring creek
and inlet was having a cannery
ereeiiTtiwreoolVQi&t from .San
Fr&aeisco to Alaska " wherever a
salmon would probably show his
head a net would probably be
Jwwi-to ran it into, and when the
price of the raw material went to
sereatyifive cents, ninety cents,
and in one instance one dollar a
fish, the query rose, "Is it worth
while to start?" The general
conclusion was that of two evils,
the lesser would be to begin op
erations; The quality of Colum
bia riretcSbaoa is confessedly un-
equaied an t&e werld: it is sought
after and deservedly commands
the highest price in English or
American markets. Hence it was
xrgiaed,.nd rightly too, that the
sale was assured and. the season
began. At that time the suppo
sition was that there would be, a
light "pack. Last season there
were 5i3,000 cases of salmon
packed on the river: few antic
ipated (that this season's pack
would reach 400,000 cases. It is
kr o "means surS that it will go
over that, for July is the month
tharshall tell the result. Up to
thirty days ago the pack wis fully"
thirty per cent below, the corres
ponding period of the previous
eeson and appearances were that
there wold be a hort pack."
Perhaps for a variety of reasons it
wwrid be as well if this season's
Colombia river salmon pack were
a short one. Since the first of
this month, however, the run has
material increased. Some" can
ne&ssflPe yet behind last year'b
figures, but there have been new
canneries built, and never before
was tojmjuch geaiun the wa-
tero that up to thecafc-of pres
ent writing the pack may bs set
down & fully up to last season's
figures at this time. The ptv
sHtjtaoa is that the pack will at
least eqntal last year's figures. Of
tkaT nothing can be more than
presumed. Another anomalous
feature of the season is the differ
ecevbetween buyers and sellers.
There- is no salmon going on
storage, and the amount actually
sold is iarbelow the sales of lor -
r
mer years. The best sale we have
heard of this season is S,000 cases
for the English market at $1.35,
which is equivalent to $1 37 for
San Francisco. The present out
look is far -from enceuraging: for
tWicanners. One thing is inani
teat: tkaefchere will be fewer boats
asd fewecteaaneries in operation
on the river next season than there
are this.

amounted to 1,400,000 square

the entire area of the country.
The Indiana supreme court has
decided that a married woman can
not enter into copartnership with
her husband or any other person
for the purpose of carrying on a
partnership business.
Six thousand baby alligators are
sold in Florida every year, and
the amount of ivorv, number of
skins and quantity of oil obtained
from the older members of the
saurian family arc sufficient to en
title them to a high place among
the products of the State.
The Louisville, Ky., Courier
Journal reports General Grant as
saying in that city recently: "I
am in favor of wiping out the iu"
ternal revenue system and making
the burdon of taxation fall upon
the imported articles. The states
themselves" should have charge of
the liquor and tobacco tax and do
what they please with it."
Over 100 Indian boys and girls,
representing sixteen tribes, have
been under instruction at Hamp
ton, Va., during the past year.
They have learned to read and
write; they have had practical les
sons in industrial pursuits farm
ing, shoe making, harness making,
tailoring, kitchen work, etc. And
have learned the practices of civil
ization. It is but simple justice to the
president to say that he has done
little to erabarass or weaken, and
much to harmonize and strengthen
his part' since the disasters of last
year. If all the leaders of the
party had interpreted and heeded
the lessons of those elections as
faithfully as the president has
tried-to do, the outlook for the
party would be much better than
it is.
