ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY
JUNE 19, 1883
The fact that each of the nine-tr-nine
county seats of Iowa is ac
cessible by railroad, shows to good
advantage the splendid railroad
system of the Hawkeye state.
A" accident in a crowded hall
at Sunderland, England, last Sat
urday caused a fatal stampede
and crush, in which nearly two
hundred unfortunate children
were smothered and trampled to
death.
Caftalx Eads will sail for
Europe on the 20th on business
appertaining to the Tehuantepec
ship railway. He asserts confi
dently that at the end of five years
ships will be carried on rails from
one sea to the other.
Fbox New York comes the
startling intelligence that S. J.
Tilden "is likely to fall dead any
minute." The news is somewhat
mitigated by the reflection that S.
J. is not alone in that respect. "SVe
are all troubled that way.
'Already has begun in eastern
journals the harmless pastime of
nominating Democratic presiden
tial and vice-presidential candidates
for 1SS4; some go so far as to pre
pare tabulated statements of
probable electoral majorities, ap
parently forgetting that homely
proverb in reference to the enu
meration of poultry, prior to the
process x incubation.
Possibilities in the use of pa
per seem unlimited. A Lansing
barg, N. Y. firm has almost com
pleted a paper steamboat for a
Pittsburg company Its length
is twenty feet. It has a seating
capacity for twenty-five per
sons, and a carrying capacity of
thirty tons. The sheathing is a
solid body of paper three-eighths of
an inch thick. A bullet from a.
revolver, fired at the sheathing
from a distance of only four feet,
neither penetrated nor abraded it.
One of the most positive proofs
that Roscoe Conkling is out of pol
itics, is his recent purchase of The
Jxidgt. This clever publication,
like other humorous journals of
its class was never weary of cari
caturing the favorite son of the
empire state, and to stop the au
novance, the ex-statesman has
"cliased the offending journal.
A man who is in politics doesn't
mind such notices. Indeed, the
average politician delights in be
ing noticed, and would prefer
abuse to being let entirely alone.
A. New York special says: A
private letter to a gentleman in
this city from an officer attached
to the household of the Prince
of "Wales gives some interesting
facts in relation to the condition of
the English queen. They corro
borate the statements already
si&de of the morbid condition of
her mind, and that she is a prey
to strange fancies and superflu
ous fears. She appears to be in
constant dread of the receipt of
bad news, and insists on daily di:.
"patches as to the health of the
crown prince of Russia and the
family. Apprehensions are ex
cited that the queen's condition
say result in insanity, like that of
George III.
OtJK enterprising Steatle neigh
bors are pushing down a railroad
to strike Grajs harbor, and secure
the trade of that rich and rapidly
growing country. It would re
quire but little effort on the part of
Astorians to secure this trade,
which by all natural law belongs
to this port. One of the first
things necessary is the building of
a narrow guage railroad across the
narrow neck of land between Ba
kers bay and Shoalwater bay.
Tbe Columbia is the entrepot for
all that magnificent scope of coun
try from the Quinault reservation
to Yaquina and it will be bet
ter for Astoria to use all requisite
endeavors to secure the trade than
in the near future to be obliged to
spend far more in an effort to re
tain it.
