ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY. JUNE 16. 1SSS
Don't Send Them Here.
NEW TO-DAY
The New York Herald says:
"The success of Crook's force is a
question to which, we trust, the
president will give the attention
which its importance demands.
Crook and his men have once
more suoaueu me Apacnes. i ue
accounts agree substantially that
alll the survivors of.thts baud arc
confirmed murderers, and will
ceme into the possession of the
government as prisoners, together
with the spoils of their numerous
robberies and assassinations. "What
is going to b$ done with these
savages? Are they once more to
be collected on a reservation, there
to be fed and fatted until they are
ready for another raid? In the
first place the leaders of this band
ought to be hanged, and that
quickly, and the remainder be
transported out of Arizona and
New Mexico. Their tribal
organization ought to be care
fully but thoroughly de
stroyed, and individual families
ought to be distributed among the
agencies of reservations in North
ern California, in Oregon and Da
kota, where Apaches so distributed
and no longer united, would be
harmless. Thev are the lowest of
American Indians, and most brutal
and incorrigibly lerocious. The
least that can be done with them
is to place them where they will
have no power to combine for
murder and revenge.

Tire intimate relations between
this country and England is sin
gularly illustrated by the fact that
the present disturbance in Ire
land is likely to become an impor
tant factor in our national politics.
The question of tariff and free
trade comes up in the next elec
tion, and if the free Americans of
Irish descent who help so univer
sally to run this country can be
shown that a vote with the free
trade party will help England, it
will be to them the strongest in
