ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY. JUKE 15, 1883
A "Washington special says the
report of the probable abdication of
Queen Victoria causes a good deal
of stir in diplomatic circles. The
general expression is that the
event is quite probable. Later re
ports seem to have reached this
country well authenticated, and
even the British minister is said to
hire expressed belief in the re
port, though he lias had no official
notification of the fact. The
queen's advanced age, and increas
ing troubles, are urged as entirely
confirmatory of the report. Mr.
"West is reported as saying that he
has, for some time, expected to
hear that such a step was in con
templation. The queen is now in
her 65 year, and the cares of state
rest heavily upon her shoulders.
A Sax "Francisco dispatch says
arrangements have been made by
jj GapUinB.B. Tuttle for the trans
mission overland of mails for Or
egon and "Washington Territory
from the east, which, it is be-
lieveH, will materially shorten the
time of their transit. Instead of
Ibeing sent in the usual manner
the mails wiil be taken off the
overland train at Sacramento, and
thence forwarded to Portland via
Redding, by stage to the exten
sion of the Oregon and California
railroad from Roseburg. Mails ar
riving one day previous to the
sailing of Portland steamers will
be landed at San Francisco and
forwarded by water. The new
arrangement went into effect on
the 11th.
It has been said by the railroad
people that they would like the
Astoria land grant forfeited so
that the "overlapping grant" will
go to the Northern Pacific railroad
company. This kind of argument
will not convince any one in this
section. If the Northern Pacific
takes the overlapping land grant
of the Astoria grant there will be
that much less for the Northern
Pacific to select from other points.
The Northern Pacific grant is a
grant of a certain speci fifed num
ber of seotions of land to eaish
mile btiilt. If more is taken in
one place there will be less to
take in another.
In 1840 Harriot Marti neau
found seven vocations open to
women in the State of Massachu
setts; now there are 281 occupa
tions, in which 251,158 women
earn their own living, receiving
from $150 to 3,000 each "per an
num. A Pakis journal alleges that
Russia is aiming at the conquest
of British India, in which she has
the approval of France, in conse
quence of Great Britain assuming
to occupy Egypt.
Thk Cincinnati ('ommercidl
Gazette says there are symptoms
that ex-Governor Hendricks be
lieves in the old ticket, and will
not he unwilling to see it at the
front in 1SS4.
Railway construction in the
United States for the year 1SSP. is
estimated as not likely to exceed
8,000 miles, against 11,000 miles
last vear.
