ASTORIA, OREGON:
"WEDNESDAY.
...JUNE 13, 18S3
Saw Sills for Astoria.
Seattle has twelve or fourteen
saw mills and Astoria has but
three. Astoria should have as
-OTtny sar mills as Seattle and
nore. The timber about Astoria
is as good if not better than on'
Paget Sound. It is abundant. It
n be gotten out and taken to
the mills at Astoria as cheaply as
to the mills on Puget Sound. "The
lumber can be carried by steam
xnd sail vessels from Astoria to
tbe.'re&t lumber markets of the
Pacific ocean for less cost than
Puget Sound. Astoria should be
catting five hundred thousand feet
of lumber per day in place of seventy-five
thousard. The demand
for lumber seems to be unlimited.
The business pays well. It is not
for laok of capital we have so few
-,. these paying institutions.
Ah Astoria Project.
$CJLpr. A. "W. Beeiiy, of this city
has effected & novel charter, taking
the American bark C. Southard
IZiilbcrt to load salmon and wool
- m the Columbia, he paying $20,
,500 for. the vessel for the vovage.
THecharter is novel in a double
sense, as it is the first instance on
..record in the history of Columbia
shipping where a vessel was char
tered otherwise than by the ton,
and when the vessel sails for New
Yprk, it will be with the first ship
ment of the Icind from the Colum
bia to an eastern port. It is
" thought that upsn the completion
-of the N. P. R. R., to the east,
that a vastly larger proportion of
the salmon than that now shipped
to American ports will find its
way from Astoria across the conti-ment.
Pointers.
TnE steamship JEurelra sunk in
Peril straits, will be raised and
- pumped out, and is probably afloat
by now.
A report received at Fort Bowie
Arizona, from Mai or Biddle's
command is to the effect tliat
' 'extensive prairie fires which have
' recently shot across southern
Arizona originated in Mexico, and
-tWare thought to be the work of
4 Indians returning north.
The New York Indicator says
corn was carried the other day
from Chicago to New york for 2i
cents a bushel, and on the follow
iday dealers who had been
working for a decline in rates
chartered a number of vessels to
carry corn at 2 cents a bushel.
Hie Cowboys1 legitimate occu
. jupation is seriously threatened.
"Three men now do the work of
fifteen or twenty. Formerly it
was the custom to "loose herd"
- the cattle during the day and have
them in corrals at night. Now
cattle roam within miles of wire
fence.
The British bark Inyomar
previously reported in distress was
abandoned on March 7th off Cape
Horn. The master and eight
nen were taken off by the British
ship Lord Kennaird, from Astoria
for-Queenstown, who landed them
.at Queenstown; the remainder
were taken on board by the Lake
Ontario.
4 "The rapidity of the world's
progress in certain respects was
pretty vividly suggested at Chica
go when Mayor Harrison opened
ycjtfee exhibition of railroad appli
ances with the statement that there
are 2C5,OO0 miles of the iron ways
. in operation enough to make
eleven circuits of the earth and
was followed by the appearance of
aXraJ"na,re mechanic who ran on
C-xke first locomotive that ever
- k&uled & train.
Ja a party in St. Joseph Mo.,
""are & young man "noted for his
- 'c2Hant conversational powers,"
sad a beautiful girl "from one of
: .- , - .,
ue upper counties, ana in tne
course of a struggle for the pos-
tMMOR of a trinket "the girl
s&ak her ivory teeth into
the fleshy part of the vouncr
maa's arm." He politely
coaoe&led his pain till he returned
4i thoate, when, on removing his gar-
Mats, blood was found trickling
frost the wound. Next morning
the lacerated arm was swollen to
twice its natural size, and he was
kid up for several days. The St.
mc J-OMgh "paper, in relating the inci-
4m, refers to another and worse
4POM of a similar nature that occur-
- d Cape Girardeau few year ago,
jM'which a young gentleman ac-
tually died from a playful bile on
his thumb by a young lady. The
paper remarks: "It frequently
happens that the bite of a woman
is poisonous."
' In the last two issues of the
Portland Standard to hand, are
sensible articles in relation to the
Astoria land grant and the im
pro.vement of the bar. The editor
takes the sensible view that the
place to begin bar improvements
is at the bar, and the most press
ing need for Astoria's proper de
velopment is the speedy settle
ment of the land grant question.
