SLOGGED BY A LORD.
Mace Discouraged.
Lord Charles Beresford has en
tered the prize ring. The arrival
of Jem Mace and the Maori,
Slade, was no sooner announced
than his Lordship's aristocratic
blood was stirred for a fight. He
challenged the Maori nd Mace
and a set to without gloves was
arranged. Sporting circles be
came interested and even the fash
ionable world was eager to patron
ize the fight Jem Mace accepted
the- challenge and the fighters metrj
in a specially engaged private
room near the Elephant and Cas
tle house on the Borough road.
The Prince of Wales was present,
surrounded by a large number of
aristocratic sports and private gen
tlemen. Thdre were also a num
ber of the "fancy" in the neigh
borhood of the ring. Heavy bet
ting was indulged in and tin fun
was enjoyed immensely by those
present.
After several exciting rounds-,
in which excellent science was dis
played on both sides, Mace failed
to come to time and acknowleged
himse4f badly beaten. Lord
Charles won an easy victory, al
most without a scratch. Herbert
Slade, the Maori, who had been
anxious to have a round or two
with Beresford, looked on with
amazement as the old Gghter Mace
received a pumraeling from his
noble opponent. When Lord
Charles had finished with Mace
and had received the plaudits of,
the company, he invited Slade to
take a turn, but the Maori, warned
by the woebegone appearance of
Mace, .refused to enter the ring
or risk anyjencounter with Lord
ChaaJes.
Mace took his defeat quietly,
but the Maori was much cha
grined at the result. Ho had
counted on getting some reputa
tion in England and his backing
down at the first challenge is re
garded with suspicion. It is known
that Lord Charles had intimated
to his Koyal Highness that an
Englishman could always whip a
professional fighter and that he
had expressed a determination to
whip Jem Mace and the Maori
giant at the first opportunity.
