An Immigration Scheme Some time ago the German govern ment instituted through some of its wealthy representative men a compre hensive system of relief, and after some temporary expedients had been tried it was decided to further extend the sphere of the society's intluence by forming a syndicate for tho pur chase of a large tract of land in this country for a German coloiry who would be given an opportunity to get here on easy terms and be allowed time in which to pay for the land. With this view Baron Von Schilling, and a distinguished coadjutor of his came out to this country on a tour of inspection, about eight een months ago. About the 1st of May they came from the southwest to see this northwest coast of which they had heard so much. The Baron upon his arrival waited for his colleague at Astoria and while here spoke in tho most enthusiastic manner of our city and its possibilities. Learning of a, large area of vacant land in this and Tillamook counties he made consider able inquiry and research into the cli mate, resources, etc. lie h expected to return about the 1st of July, when he can have further opportunity of deciding as to the location of his Ger man colony. Good Buough! The Astoria x copies a reoent ex tract from tho Herald in which we as signed a prominent place to tho pleas ant city in which that excellent jour nal is published as a probable competi tor for the commercial supremacy of the northwest. Our confrere is not content with the prospect of being second beat, Seattlo leading. All wo have to say on the subject neighbor, is just this: If Astoria can win the prize in a fair contest, then: is no place north of San Fraucisco to which we would yield it with le.3 regret or fewer heart burnings. IJut Seattle first all the time for us, and may you come so near boating us that the nice will be neck and neck. It is not so very long since Tin: Astokiax said there was cake enough to go round. We stiil think that view is the correct one. In the meantime here's luck, peace in your walls and pleuteousnes in your palaces. The Venice of the Columbia, like jelly cake and Mocha coffee after a dozen quadrilles, is one of our weaknesses. Long may she wave! frattU Herald. Hotel Arrivals. ocuiuurrr. A Xoltner. Eureka, :0 the Oregonians are to say little d;-? SW.& perform much, while of ctmrse there are some who talk all the time and j say" nothing. Anyhow, the Oregon ians are a set of people always ready and willing to fleece somebody, as a rule, and when a short sighted person comes here, they are sharpened and kept sharp. Owing to the fact that this country as well as Portland is cosmopolitan in its make-up, it is not strange that business managements in these climes are sharp and tricky. The manners of the Oregonians differ vastly from those of the east. When ever acquaintances meet, reserved ex pression is the custom, and scarcely anything 13 uttered without judicious forethought, and then in a few words only. A peraon must know when to be silent as well as when lo say some thing. When acquaintances part, often nothing is said, and this is con sidered polite manners. We meet each other pleasantly, and whenever suitable we walk away without a word, or when something is said.the expres sion "so long' is uttered. Care is taken to have every sentence clear and inclusive within itself. Nothing is said wherein tho thought is open to doubt, or about which a person could prevaricate. Supposition and pre sumption arc less indulged in, and many Oregonians only speak about that which they are certain and actually know. Habits cannot be otherwise in this frontier life, lest a person would bo caught through his own talk, and put down as a rat hole man. Puinors and current news are never taken as reliable facts, but merely for information until wo other wise know them to be authentic In all such things a man forms his own opinion and an opinion of anything does not alter the facts of the case. One of tho best ways of finding any thing oiiv of anybody is that a person gcnerjlly talks about what is foremost in his mind. It is really not a diffi cult task for an experienced Oregonian to measure anybody in his business capacity. Truth at the greatest in so little that he who talks the least is the most regarded m this respect. The Oregonians make use of quite a viriety of Shibboleth language de rived from the Spanish, French, In dian. Chinese and th-r 1 innagus which an very rhetorical, puiutcd and spicy in their effect. Cracking j.kes, telling yarns and debating societies are quite a common feature in these climes. In argument or couversitiun a man muH well guild himself and leave no h-le in the skimmer through which auother can crawl our. Every thought is expressed with a view to surmount auother and in leaving it unequivocal and air tight. We use "see" for "understand," "nigh" for "near4" "so long"' for "good-bye," and numerous conventional expre3 sions. Book learning is not so much adhered to by adults, and Ecarccly anything but business and making money is the common go 111 Oregon. Many young men and boys in Port land are in business and making their dollars and getting sharp and intelli gent through experience, and know little what books contain. Whenever we talk to persons out here -ibout China, Australia, England, Russia, Germany or any other country we talk to men who were there and know all about it. Ailvirrto CouMinipthrs. On the appearance of the first symptoms as general debility, loss of appetite, pallor, chilly sensations, fol lowed by night-sweats and cough prompt measures for relief should be taken.
