Too Portland will elect men on tho 18th inst. four council- The circulation of Thk Dulv A&tokian steadily increases. Mi duel Studziiiski ha3 opened a ew jewelry store on the roadway. The Gem. Miles is off for Gray's barber at six o'clock this morning. The Western Utile went up etream yesterday. The lied" sails from Kuappton to-day. The Clara Parker goes to Port land this morning. She will bring dtnvn a load of brick. A man with from $2,000 to 5, t00 capital can hear of a good opening by inquiring at this oflice. Tho gas works, the water works, and the completion of the first brick building, all come together. A triad of improvement for Astoria. There was no lack of fish at tho canneries yesterday; everyone visited seemed to have about as many as they ceuld conx-ouiently dispose of. The Oregon arrived in yesterday, Pilot Uotncs on deck. Capt. A. D. Wass will take the Queen of the Pacific across tho bar outward bound to-day. The jolly tars aboard the Titan amused themselves flying kites yester day afternoon. A kite floating above the main-mast of a vessel in the stream is a novel sight. By a recent decision of J. P. Linton, "Supreme Chancellor of the world," the Washington Territory ledge K. of P. are placed under tho jurisdiction of tho Grand lodge of Oregon. The annual session of the Grand lodge of K. of P., of this state, con venes at The Dalles to-da'. MeBsra. Bozorth, Curtip, Campbell, Fultcn and Douglas represent this section of the state. Out of one thousand five hundred salmon eggs, in tho ordinary course of nature only one produces a muturo E&lmon. If all the eggs laid were to produce salmon, in half a century the ocean whiH be n moving mans of sahtKm. A portion of H. G. Hurlburt's surveying party came in on Sunday and wont to Portland. They report the party on the Fishhawk and "push ing aleng." One of them ha a fair spociinon of iron ore. They report an easy grade of one foot to the hundred. By much reading the discovery has at lasc been made by one whom modesty forbids u? to name, that the superficial area of Russia and the uxomi is the same. The knowledge of tliis fact is alone worth a years sub scription to The Astoriax. About sir o'clock last Sunday evening, Capt- Brown, of the Argo hah, picked up ono of S. D. Adair's boats off Peacoct Spit. The men who were clinging to the upturned craft say that he came along just in time as thoy could not have held on much longer. In Belf-defense the local editor arises and says that tho Norwegian girl who advertised for a situation in Saturday's paper got a placo "right away." Judging from the inquiries since the adv. appeared, it would be a paying investment for some one to im port a few hundred. --We have at last discovered through reading a series of his melan choly lucubrations what tho trouble is with tho singular case of arrested development that misled confidence allows to trickle over the local columns of the Seattle Herald. The unfortu nate creature wants to be funny and doesn't know how. The American ship Titan, 1,229, of Boston, Norris master, arrived m yesterday, 155 days from New York with general cargo. Tho Titan was last hero seven j ears ago, and loaded salmon for Liverpool. She was then commanded by Capt. Berry, since de ceased, a brother of Capt. A. W. Brry of this city. She goes up stream to-day. The advent of Penobscot salmon is worthy of notice. Four fino fish were taken in tho river on tho 1st of May, the smallest fish weighing 1G pounds and the largest 23 pounds. A salmon was also taken off North Truro, Mass., on ilay 2. Last year about 900 pounds were caught in tho same locality. This fact shows that salm on stay in the salt water not far from the rivers. The first quarterly concert of the Astoria Mnsical Society will bo given at Occidental Hall this evening, tho performance beginning at eight o'clock precisely. The programme is an at tractive one, the performers have on many former occasions demonstrated their musical ability, the rehearsals have been thorough and a large audi eace will doubtless be present. Tick ets for ado at tho City Book Store. Found Drowned. At an early hour last Sunday morn ing the body .f John Martin was seen in the water near Jas. Magea'a house above J no. Devlin's cannery. The body was brought ashore, and yester day the coroner held an inquest, with tho following result: CORONERS INQUEST. In the matter of tho inquisition up on tho body of John Martin, deceased, we the undersigned jurors summoned to appear before B. B. Franklin, cor oner of the precinct of Astoria, coun ty and state aforesaid, at the under dertaking rooms in the City of As toria, Ogn., on the 4th day of June, 1SS3, to inquire into the cause of the death of the said John Martin, having been duly sworn according to law, and having made such inquisition after in specting the body and hearing the testi mohy adduced, upon our oaths each and all do say, that we find the le ccased was named John Martin; was a native of aged about 35 years, that he came to his death on the 2nd day of June, 1883, by acci dental drowning in the Columbia river near J. A. Devlin's cannery in this city, while in a state of intoxica tion. And we further find deceased had on his person the sum of $18.80. All of which wo duly certify to by this inquisition in writing. By in sigtied this 4th day of June, 1883. Chas. S. Wright, Foreman, L. E. Sulks, A. M. Beedk, Taos. Logan, Pw. F. Williams, F. C. 2SORRLS. Death of Capt. Graham - Capt. Samuel Graham., who for about a year past has been engaged in boat building in upper Astoria, departed this life yesterday morning after six week's illness. Last spring ho was taken with the measles which resulted in a severe bronchial affection which terminated fatally. Capt. Graham was a native oF Ohio For many years he navigated tho waters of lake Michigan. Ho leaves a wife and several children to whom he was most devotedly attached nud who now mourn the loss of a kind husband and an affectionate father. Tho deceased was a member in good standing of Ocean Lodge 2o. 200, F. & A. M., Pentwater, under the jurisdiction of tho Grand lodge of Michigan, and as will be seen by a notice in another column his brethren of Temple Lodge No. 7, will inter his remains to-day with the impressivo Masonic rites and ceremonies peculiar to the order. At the last meeting of Pacific lodge No. 18, K. of. P., the following officers were elected: A. W. Stone, P. C; T. Byrie, C. C; F. Newell. V. C; Dr. Shaw, P. At the regular monthly meetiug of Astoria Engine Co. No. 1, held last eveuing, G. P. Wheeler aud B. F. Stevens were elected delegates to the firemaus convention to be held at Salem June 13, 18S3; the company also voted 100 to pay the expenses of the team. Arndt &, Ferchen have put in a new engine at the Point Adams Pack ing company, which is pronounced a model of strength and durability by all who have seen it. It is a West inghouse engine,G x 0, 12 horse power, ana is so constructed mat it requires J neither adjustment, lining, keying up, packing, oiling or wiping. Arndt & Ferchen are agents for Astoria. The Astoria Iron Works are still turning out can-filler. They are in good repute among cannery-man, who figure that a can-filler costing $800, will do a? much work in a season as 1,350 worth of Chinese lab&r, and then be in good working order for the next season's work, that is, one of tho machines will pay for itself and earn over 500 for its ownor th first season. W. S. Block, for six j-eara hos pital steward at Fort Catiby. has been assigned to eastern duty, and will leave with his family for New York on to-day's steamer. His weather re ports to The Astoeian during that time have been duly appreciated. Should he issue weather reports on the Atlantic slopo the difference between "minimum" and "maximum" will be more marked than at the equablo mouth of the Columbia. He came down from Clifton last Saturday, and in the afternoon drop ped into a barber shop and found all the chairs occupied except that of the "boss" of the establishment. Taking it, he received at the hands of the boss scraper an execrable shave. As he left the chair, the boss said, in a tone of apolegy: "I'm a barber short this week." "Yes," he said, looking in the glass at his scarified neck and chin, "I didn't suppose j'ou had been a barber long." Seleot Party. A. F. Naef will give a select social nartv at Knights of Pythias Hall, on Thursday evening, June 7th. The best music that can be procured will be pro vided. AH the latest dances will be called. Lower qualities are offering at 20s. to 21s., but it is a poor wasty stuff at these figures, and must be rather unprofitable to handle. Columbia-river salmon it still held by importers for 25s. to 203., as little re mains on hand, but not many trans actions are passing thereat. London Grocer. In canned goods there is very little change to report since last week, and the only sales of moment have been a few parcels of Columbia river salmon, to arrive by the LaJx Ontario, at fair prices. The prevailing opinion, bow ever, is that there wiil be an improved demand very shortly for good well- known brands of the description mentioned, as it is stated that some of the brands of Fraser river fish are not turning out so well as anticipated. From another sourco the report is that there is a steady demand from the country, although the cold weather has usually a tendency to decrease consumption. There is an ample variety of brands, and biryers have the advantage of the competition which large stocks engender. As has bson before pointed out, the arrival of the season's catch came early and very close together, so that there has been littlo or no replenishment of stocks from late arrivals as has been the case in previous seasons. Colum bia river salmon is at present quoted at 249. to 20s., and Fraser river 23?. to 24$. per vase. Liverpool Corres pondence American Grocer. School election At the last meeting of the board of directors of school district No. 1, Mrs. F. E. Martin waw elected to fill the position of principal for the ensu ing school year. Mrs. Martin will be kindly remembered by many who knew her as Miss Brown, prior to her marriago to Dr. Martin in this city last September, shortly after which event Dr. Martin and wife left for Reno, Nevada, where they have since resided. Mis3 Carrie Fields was elected to the position of assistant principal a deserved promotion. There are three more teachers to elect, tho directors of the school district being of tho opinion that the needs of the district demands an additional teacher for the coining season. Police Court. N. dock "it either is that I am par ticularly fortunate in my trip, or else I havo been egregiously imposod upon, fori was smilingly told when I left homo that 'it always rained in Aitoria. Is this a specimen of your climate?" We assured him it was a fair sample of what we had been having ever since is th.it we have th j finest climate ' in tho United States right here in Astoria, and it h only when an Asto- joy at home. It never got too hot I from the ocean harsh asperity of for the the sometime breeze :o bo modified so that the delightful sea air feels like velvet to the cheek; .od digestion doth always wait on appetite, and health on both, aud the wonderful salubrity of this favored sp.t is beat attested by tho low death rate. Then are localities that are drier; we spent three pleasant years in a sunny nook of the golden state where a cloud was a phenomenon, and a shower was good for an item any day in the year, but like the fabled city of the gods it grew monotonous, and tho people stole away to where they could feel the great drops come rejoicingly down and see the fields and forests dressed in living green. We arc quite sure that every man, woman sni child that crossed the Columbia bar yesterday morning on the Oregon and looked upon a scene of beauty that is worth crossing tho continent to behold, shall take with them through life a most pleas ing memory of that glorious scene; it will hang as a pleasant picture in the walls of memory's picture gallery. That wide expanse of shining water, with shadows moving shoreward in its merald depths; tho giant hills fir crowned aud radiant ii the golden glory of a May sunrise; the wreaths of silvery nmt, the myriads of white winged boats; tho far-off blue of the distant mountains, the busy city on the southern bank of tho great river, that moves in silent majesty to the Bta; the docks and tho shipping, all these must have fonuexl a panorama of intensest interest to the hun dreds of human beings who came in yesterday morning to the most favored portion of nature great domain -the great north west. 'Manifest Destiny." The growth of Astoria has been marvelous when you consider that the owners of land thereabouts are not anxious to sell, aud that in conse quence thereof there has been no "boom" in real estate. On the con trary, tho growth of Astoria has bucn on tho siow-aud-sure order, as her citizens represent the moat conserva tive element of Oregon's population. Her fisheries are not in any immedi ate danger, lor jiiit about Ihe time the salmon begin to give out, her shad fisheries will begin to assume important dimensions. And when they are gone she can fall back upon the timber forests of tho Columbia for foreign export of lumber. So that there is no calculating upon ithe de cline of values in Astoria. Her posi tion is that of a toll-gate upon the loveliest river in the known world, and all her tributaries are recognized sources of cardinal wealth. She has a wonderful water-front and a climate that is syr onyinous with health itself. Sho has not much longer to" wait for the prosperity which is her manifest destimy.
