ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY ' JUNE 5, 1883
A Mistaken Idea.
A GLA.RIXG instance of raiscon
conception of the truth is afforded
by the recentaction of an eastern la
bor convention, Athichinan earnest
but totally misguided effort to se
cure the "freedom of labor,"
framed a platform of which this is
the most prominent plank:
"We demand of congress an act
making it a penal offense to import
foreign labor under contract for
the purpose of reducing the -wages
of American labor."
They also demand "that trans
portation and telegraph charges
skall be based on actual cost, af
ter allowing a fair profit.". Fur
ther on they insist that there "shall
be equal pay for equal work for
both sexes," and also declare that
'education must be made compul
sory." All these resolutions look di
rectly to the .increased interfer
ence of government in private af
fairs. If transportation and tele
graph charges are to be based on
actual cost, that actual cost must be
determined and the charges must
b regulated by government. II
education is to be made compul
sory, it is the agents of govern
ment who must apply the compul
sion. If equal pay is to be the
rule for both sexes when they per
form equal work, government of
ficers must ascertain the facts and
administer the remedy. If the in
troduction of foreign workmen is
to be controlled, and if, under cer
tain circumstances, it is to be pun
ished, the control and the punish
ment must likewise be intrusted
to the government. In a word,
what these laboring men demand
is that the hand of the govern
ment shall be made heavy; that
its oversight of private affairs
shall be intensified; and that, in
stead of less government and
more liberty, we shall have more
government and less liberty.
This doctrine is the very re
Terse of all the political truths
and principles through whose de
velopment this republic has grown
up; and this anti-American ten
dency, this tendencj' to despotic
measures and despotic remodies,
this distrnst of freedon, this oppo
sition to the methods of liberty,
which pervades that platform is
the idea and outgrowth of for
eigners, of men who have not
been in this country long enough
to understand our American sys
tem, of men who were reared un
der conditions which our repub
lican democracy renders impossi
ble to exist. It smacks too much
of the "paternal form of govern
ment," the government of France
aad Germany which does all the
thinking for the individual and
turns the citizen into an automatic
machine. It is an ti-American and
should be condemned.
"Ax old, blatherskite" is the
cruel, contemptuous term that the
Oregoniau applies to Gen. Ben. F.
Butler, Democratic governor of
Republican Massachusetts.
