Nashville, June 1. Col Buck ner H. Payne, better known in the south' as "Ariel," died in the Davidson county asylum for the poor last night, aged 84. He was at one time considered the great est logician in the south and wrote a book in which he argued that a negro was an inferior being and had no soul. At one period he was in affluent circumstances, but died blind. A year before Gar field -rras shot he. predicted the assassination. He predicted small pox in 1880, to occur over the en tiro country in 1883, and his own death on the last day of May, 1883.
