Public Lands.
There are large bodies of very
fine timber land lying vacant in
this county. Our own people
should take up these lands and
thus save the stumpage to residents
of the county.
An applicant for timber land
can not take up more than 160
acres. He must be a citizen of
the United States and must make
his application at the land office at
Oregon City. Lands thus taken
must be shown to be unfit for cul
tivation and to contain no miner
als. Residence on the land is not
required. The price any where in
this county is $2.50 per acre,
which is to be paid after GO days.
It has been intimated that the de
partment will enforce a ruling that
no lands can be takea up as tim
ber lands which can.be made til
lable by the removal -of timber.
If such a rule could be enforced
it would be well for this county, as
it wojiq save to the pre-emptor
and actual settler lands which are
now bfing" filed on for specula

The well-known Parisian editor,
M Moigno, has written a paper on
the synthesis of the heavens and
the earth In this he makes the
deduction that everything origi
nated from ether, which first gener
ated hydrogen. To an imputa
tion of other he attributes the
existence throughout the universe
of the action of gravitation.
Reports from different parts of
the country encourage the belief

and states that a new yard has
been opened at Port Richmond
with contracts already made and
work begun on five new ships.
The Louisville Courier-Journal
says: "For years we have stood
out against blood-spilling in Ken
tucky. It is a blot, and a deep

shall never cease in our efforts to
wipe it out. But we hope never
t live to see the day when the
unwritten law requiring the life of
& man for the honor of a woman
shall be relaxed."

"The plan of numbering the
Italian laborers on the West Shore
road," says the Kingston Free
man, "works like a charm. Find
ing it impossible to keep track of
them by their jaw-breaking names,
the contractors concluded to num
ber them. The number of each
Italian is painted in plain figures
on the seat of his pantaloons. Be
fore beginning work in the morn
ing and at noon and again at
night, the men are formed in line,
and the foreman passes in the rear
of them and takes down each
number, in order to ascertain who
is present, as well as who is ab
sent. The plan is beneficial in
two ways the men are easily rec
ognized, and ther are also kept
from sitting down too much for
fear of rubbing out the figures on
the seats of their pantaloons."

IN ADDITION TO WHAT HAS ALREADY
been said in favor of the Cau Filling Ma
chine, patented by Mr. Jensen, and built by
the Astoria lion Works, I can say that it Is
the greatest Iabor-savmc machine that has
vet been invented for packing salmon. Last
Friday our machine, running at moderate
speed, filled 4U cases in ten hours, and Sat
urday it filled 320 cases in seven hours. I
am confident it will fill 500 cases per day and
do it better than can be done by hand.
