Asteklvx: I avail the present moment to pea down briefly a. few of my ob servations during a week's ramble in Shoalwater Bay country. To reach that point from Asto ria I had a pleasant trip across the Columbia to Ilwaco, fare only one dollar, thence by stage over nature's sea coast road, with rest less old ocean on the west, and a splendid, varied scenery, alter nated with undulating hills, prairies and woodlands to tho east. After a charming stage ride of twenty-one miles we landed at Oysterville, on the banks of Shoal water bay, a handsomer sheet of water no man's eyes ever feasted upon. The town site of Oyster ville is simply beautiful, being level, and at first appearance looks as one of Alladin's enchanted otties sprung up out of a vast green meadow. Oysterville comprises about on hundred buildings, at present about one-third of them are untenanted, these occupants have jrrown rioh and have sought othor climo. The citizens of the town and country surrounding are genial, communicative and hospitable. Shoalwater bay i about twenty miles long by an average of six miles wide. The depth of water is sufficient to admit ships of re spectable tonnage. A sail upon the placid waters of the bay leav ing Oysterville, and pursuing a southeasterly direction for six miles wc arrived at Diamond City, situated upon an island, once a popular resort for oystermen though now deserted; there aro several buildings, all unoccupied, looking- like silent monuments of past industry. Nasel river empties into the ba at this place, a large saw mill is being erected on the river. Taking a northerly course we pass many picturesque landscapes, prominent among which are Sandy point and Coos point, turning sharply to cast from Coos point, and 13a Center is sighted, a thriving little town sar rounded by many growing indus tries, situated at the mouth of BaKx river: on again a few miles and wo reach Ston' point consisting of a huge combina tion of gigantic boulders indiscrim inately heaped together, pile upon pile, extending shout a mile into the bay. Clinging to the rocks, are innumerable shell fish, and vegeta ble sea growth, altogether pres enting a brown appearance, there being no other kind of rocks in the region to be seen, these pe culiar isolations looks curious, and after racking my geological brain for a cause of such deposit, vio lently presumed they served as baMat for Noah's Ark. Up and away and Bruce port is seen, a s.mali lively little place; one store and several buildings, are its make up. South Bend is the next port of entry, here is an extensive saw mill in full blast. "We soon pass the "SYilapa river upon which is extensive timber and fine bot toms, sufficient to make homes for the hundreds. Then comes North River, Cedar River and Tucker Poinlj all along the scenery is sublimely grand, and many habitations are interspersed along the coast. Next in importance is North Cove, a point I did not visit but have seon many who spoke in high praise of North Cove as a rende t)us forplcasure seekers. Home ward bound and I arrive at Oys terville, and by way of variet', went to church, saw a respectable congregation and listened to a clever sermon deliycred by Rro. Cbornc, who I learned is the agent or representative of the Methodist church and is now en gaged in beautifying Occasi Park in view of holdiug a, campmceting to commence in July. 1 learned of many desirable places for settlers to make com fortable homes, and all who want to work can get it by tho day or aonth at good wages. E. B. S. Is Alum Poisonous? Dr. Hall's Journal of Health, in n recent issue, says: "This question has caused agood deal of discussion. Alum is used bv tnanv bakers to whiten their! bread, enabling them to use an in ferior flour. It is more extensive ly employed as a cheap substitute for cream of tartar in the manu facture of baking powders. It has not been considered immediately dangerous; although if continued it induces dyspepsia and obstinate constipation. But the fact that many cases of poisoning have oc curred from baking powders which contained alum, puts the question in a more serious aspect, and pru dent people will exercise caution in the selection of baking pow- ders. ui- i !. r. i:.: ,i. lyllUUl W1JU.I. tUIIUlilUllS, IMUW, does this substance formerly used only for mechanical or medicinal purposes become poisonous? Out of a family residing , in a malarial district, some of the , members will suffer half the year' with fever and ague, while the others will enjoy excellent health ' during the entire year. Foods! that aro wholesome to .ionic per sons are actually poisonous to1 others. This is especially true of! some kinds ol fish. .There is no safety in taking alum into the stomach, as it is thown to be al- j ways injurious, and often danger-1 ous. Baking powder properly compounded, and containing pure , cream of tartar instead of alum, are j more convenient than yeast; and. bread and pastry made with them are just as wholesome, and far more ' palatable. " "We do not iiesitate to say that the Royal Baking Powder people deserve the gratitude of the community whom they are endeavoring to protect. "Will not some prominent manufacturer of pure candies fol low their example, and expose the secrets of a business that is doing untold mischief to little children?" There is unusual activity in the cattle trade of the great southwest this season. Arkansas, it is said, will furnish 2.5,000 head in very fine condition for the market. Texas, with her vast grazing area! and other advantages, will natur- j ally be expected to contiibute an immense number of cattle to the seasons drive. If the declaration ! made by Horace Greely many years ago may be taken literally, we can not expect too much fiom Texas stockmen. Mr. Greely said: '-It costs no more to raise a four year old beef in Texas, than it does to raise a hen in Masachu setts."
