A TEXAN FLAG AGAIN OVER
AIiATOO.
The flag of Texas is flying over
Fort Alamo, the property of which
it forms a part having been an
nexed the state by the Catholic
bishop after purchase. Alamo is
known as the Thermopylie of
America, from the heroic defense
of the fort made in 1S3G by a
small body of Texans against a
force of Mexicans tully thirty times
their number.
Fort Alamo was an oblong struc
ture of ebout an acre in extent,
and on the bank of the San Anto
nio river, near the town of San
Antonio. The fortification of San
Antonio had been recently dis
mantled by Houston when .(Feb
ruary 23, 1830) tho Mexicans
under Santa Anna beleaguered
the Aalmo, into which Travis
withdrew with 140 Texans, while
the Mexicans, 4,000 strong, occu
pied the town and bombarded the
fortress from batteries on both
sides of the river. Not one man
was hurt by the shelling, however,
and the garrison picked off the
Mexicans with their unerring
rifles, or when they ventured to
chxrgc the wall repulsed them
with disastrous loss. Travis was
reinforced by thirty-two men who
forced their way through the
Mexican lines, but the garrison
was too feeble to take the initia
tive, and though it noYer abated
its spirit, hard work and ceaseless
watching so told on its feeble
numbers that by the Cth the Texan
cause wis desperate. Without
provisions and with but a scanty
supply of ammunition, the garri
son yet made a gallant stand
against the overwhelming force
which assailed it at daybreak from
every side. Twice repulsed with
great loss, the Mexicans at last
made good their attack, but it was
only when the defenders of the
Alamo numbered six men--and
-t&eir unloaded rifles were shattered
dabs In their hands. These, in
cluding Crockett, surrendered to
Castrillon, upon a promise of pro
tection, but being taken before
Santa Anna they were ordered to
be hewn down. Crockett fell,
mangled by a score of swords; the
wounded Bowie was dragged
from his bed and buchered, though
not until he had shot several of his
murderers, and Evans was slain
just as he attempted to blow up
the magazine. The bodies of the
Texans, horribly mutilated, were
piled up in the center of the fort
and burned, a negro, a woman and
a ohtld alone being spared. On
the 21st of April, however, the
dead of the Alamo were bloodily
avenged. It was 1 o'clock in the
afternoon and the Mexicans, con
fident of their numbers, were en
joying their siesta on the fild of
San Jacinto, when Houston, form
ing his little force in line under
cover of the forest, advauced upon
the works. At 200 yards the
hastily mustered Mexicans fired
upon the approaching Texans who
received the volley in gnm silence,
then, with the shout, "Remember!
the Alamo!" burst upon them.
In instantaneous panic the Mexicans
fled, pursued by the relentless
victors. Houston lost eight men
killed and twenty-five wounded;
the Mexicans, 630 killed 208
wounded and 730 prisoners. In
the attack upon the Alamo they
had already lost 1.G00 men. Its
defenders had been avenged.
Remember that a raw egg will
lear 3our throat of fish-bones.
Put one in a little hot wine, add
some sugar, and the fish bones
will slip down all the easier. P.
S, You can take the egg, wine,
and sugar anyhow. They're good
as a preventive, and you don't
know what moment you may get
a fisk bone in your throat.
MI don't want no rubbish,-no
fine sentiments, if you please,"
said the widow who was asked
rkat land of an epitaph she de
sired for the late husband's tomb
stone. "Let it be short and sim
pie, something like this: Wil
Ykm Johnson, aged 75 years. The
gi. die younjf."
Slaves of tho Navajos
D. M. Riordan, of the Navojo
Indian Agency, writes to the Com
missioner of Indian Affairs under
date of Fort Dafiance, A. T.,
Ma 4th, that he was recently in
formed that a boy had been
killed Iht a member of "Francisco
Capitain's" band. An investiga
tion followed, and it was ascer
tained that the boy was the mur
derer's slave. The agent says:
"The owners of slaves have always
held that they had absolute power
over them, and thought as little of
killing one of them as they would
a dog. The beat and starved
them, and, in short, etcd toward
them as slare drivers generally do.
Consequently, they seemed unable
to comprehend why I took so
much interest in a dead slave, or
why I should bother my head
about such a trifle. I
learned from Francisco Capitain
that the entire family of the mur
dered boy and five other persons
were held as slaves. "
That the original slaves were two
Moqui girls, who were bought for
corn, four generations ago; that
all tneir descendants were consid
ered slaves and so treated all of
which he considered a perfectly
natural thing to do. Some time
ago the father of the murdered
boy asserted his right to be free.
The killing of the boy was thought
to be the right thing to remind
him oi his dependent condition.
Knowing the tedious, expensive,
and uncertain proeess of securing
a conviction under our laws, es
pecially in the Tertitorial courts,
I determined to at least secure
the liberation of all the remaining
slaves, and demanded that all
those now among the Indians
who are held in bondage should
be set free. They said it would
completely upset them, etc. One
old villian wanted to knpwjiwhi
iwill'takecare of "me if my slaves
are taken away?" Agent Rior
dan, according to his report, in
sisted that all of the slaves should
be freed, and the Indian finally
acceded to his demand. He esti
mates that there are about three
hundred persons held in slavery
by this tribe, some of whom are
war captives, while others are held
by virtue of trades or purchases.
The descendants of these, he says,
are always considered slaves. The
Indian Bureau has appioved the
stand taken by Agent Riordan,
and will render him assistance in
carrying out his plans. ir. Y.

A correspondent of the Boston
J?oat gives, upon the authority of
a gentleman- intimately related to
Daniel Webster's family, some ex
planations of the circumstonces
attending the utterances of the
great expounder's last word's. He
sa'S that in answer to a question
from an attendant at the bedside
of Webster one of his physicians
said in substance: "You may
give him a spoonful of stimulant
at o'clock; another at o'clock;
another at o'clock; and, if he
still lives, another at o'clock."
These directions were followed
with exactness until the arrival of
the hour last mentioned, when the
attendants were undecided about
administering another dose. It
was in the midst of their doubts
that the dying statesman partly
raised his head and feebly remark
ed: "I still live."
The total acreage in Scotlaud is
1S,95C,G94. One single nobleman
owns 1,32G,000 acres. Another
has 431,000 acres, a third 424,000,
a fourth 37S,000. Twelve propri
etors own one-quarter of the whole
acreage of the country, seventy
proprietors own one-half. Nine
tenths of Scotland belongs to 1,
700 persons.
Louisiana is experiencing a re
markable sawmill development.
Only in the last few years has the
value of timber there been appre
ciated, but now mills go up on all
sorts of little out-of-the-way
streams, and a great deal of valu
ble timber is being produced.

The Mormon Question.
The Inter-Ocean declares that
the Utah Commission has proved
a failure, and then goes on to as
sert that Uormonism will not die
out in time, as many argue, for it
is increasing more rapidly than
ever. The Mormon population is
growing more rapidly than that of
the Gentiles. Every year adds
strength to the Church, and it will
soon control Idaho and Wyoming,
as it does Utah now. The Mor
mon people implicitly believe that
the time will come when they
"shall occupy the earth as the wa
ters cover the sea," and that belief
is strengthened by the words
spoken from the pulpit of every
Mormon church each Sunday.
What is needed in Utah is a law
that will recognize Mormonism as
treason and treat it as such. The
church is in actual rebellion
against the United States govern
ment, denying its authority and
repudiating its laws. If the
inhabitants of Virginia or Ohio
should do the same, martial law
would be declared there, and the
local authority disarmed. There
is, therefore, no question why a
remedy that would be applied at
the center of the nation should
not be applied at one of its out
posts. The government has tri
fled with the Mormon question
long enongh, and the further a
settlement is postponed, the more
severe must be the remed'.
