ASTORIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY
MAT 27, 1883
Tie Last BourboES.
Two notable men lie at the
point of death, Jefferson Davis in
this country the Count de Cham-
bord on the other side of the At-
. .Untie. The one a Bourbon ex-
president who never presided over
-- real government; the other a
Bourbon king who never sat on a
3WW&tkioae. In private life both are
pure, accomplished, amiable, hon
orable gentlemen. But neither
of them belongs to the present
f . tpucrmou. oo iar as any active,
""I1 assocition with the events
of the day is concerned, they
kre long been dead.
Jefferson Davis represents a
drawn which has had a rough
awakening and is ended. The
Count de Chambord repre
sents a mesmeric trance, the one
- vkioa of which continues on and
on while the mesmeree lies motion-
2 lose and powerless. Years ago,
Jefferson Davis sat in -imaginary
power in Richmond, with a Secre
tary of State who had no diploma-
r tic relations, a Secretary of the
T3C dNavy without a ship, a Secretary
of the Treasury with a budget of
W l facfecferate bills. Longer 3rears
ago, the Count de Chambord held
aa imaginary French court in a
London square, where the Legiti
mists knelt before his easy-chair
and went through the court eti
quette of kissing the royal hand
wnl swearinij 'allegiance to Henry
Doubtless de Chambord ttill
-dings to the belief that he might
ooe day wear an actual crown, sit
on a real throne and once again
crown France with the glory of
the elder Bourbon rule. It is too
.much to believe that Jefferson
Davis sometimes had a shadowy
idea the "lost cause" and the
ephemeral presidency of the Con
federacy might be revived?
a if these two distinguished but
bygone gentlemen now pass away,
many hearts will be saddened by
their removal, perhaps the more
.sincerely because of their loneliness
jlhcLschtows. But the world will
. revolve as usual without knowing
that an ex-president and a throne
less king have been gathered to
th elr mother earth.
14
An Exploded Charge.
Those protectionists who con
timu&lly howl about the influence
of "British gold" in this country
will not relish the statement made
"bj .Mr. David A. Wells in
the Princeton lieviao concerning
their most absurd charge. Ac
cording to the charges of the
virtuous and truthful protection
ists the Cobden club has been the
instrument for circulating this
- VBritisk-gold" for debauching the
honesty of our people and the
amount circulated has been over
U t idliioas f dollars." But Mr.
Wells skows that the total income
of the Cobden Club has never
fbecui in any one year over $40,000,
ad that the total amount of
money collected and expended
fey that Club since its existence
has mot even equalled the sum
MMkaredrby Mr. W. D. Jvelley as
having been expended in one year
sJooe by British agents in this
country to influence free trade
legislation. The fact of the mat
ter k, the protectionists find the
people are looking too closely into
their arguments and they make
tiis cry of foreign influence in
trder to distract attention. They
k not mind prevaricating if they
think it will help their cause.
