Villaed and his corporations
are engaged in tbo transportation
besinesB. They hare neither ri
vals or competitors within their
cbosen field. Not only the selfish
interests of the corporations which
3iY. "Vlllard represents, but also
the great mountain of stocks a.nd
boods issued by these corpora
tiooa, are now owned by parties
trko will demand dividends there
on, will compel Villard to squeeze
eTerj penny out of his freight
and passenger business that it is
peeeible o wring out of it by ev
ery imaginable device, without
absolutely killing the goose that
lays tne golden egg. Vlllard will
not even have an option at saying
that rates shall be reasonable. His
stockholders will clamor for divi
dends on the untold millions of
stocks and bonds, and Mr. Villard
mustgrind it out of the people, or
get down and out of his place. This
fact will compel "Vlllard to haul
the freight just as far as possible,
so as to have an excuse for as
wany charges as possible, and this
will compel him to adopt the
policy of encouraging all imports
of werckandise and exports of farm
produce through some port on
Paget Sound Seattle, or even
some place beyond that. This
would give him the longest haul of
the wheat, wool, etc., of all of Ore
gon and eastern "Washington.
But this is not for the interest
of our farmers. They want their
produce put in the ship by the
shortest haul possible. . For this
reason Oregonians must favor
Portland or Astoria as a shipping
point for their commerce. "We not
only want our produce put on
skips within our own state, but the
advantages id point of taxation of
the wealth of a great commercial
city ought not to be lost to Ore
gon. It is unnecessary to say the
above is not a quotation from a
Portland paper. Had it been
tkere would be not a hint that
Astoria should be made the ship
ping point for the commerce of
the Columbia. It is the Videtle
that has said what all can see, that
the place to ship the grain from,
is that point where it can be near
est reached by deep draught ves
sels. That point is Astoria, and
o booming of the Sound by Port
land papers whose proprietors
kare financial interests in Sound
real estate can shut the eyes of the
people to the fact.
