Cz fce gails gVsixrxdmu ASTOKIA, OREGON: TUESDAY.... ..MAY 22, 1883 Saw Mills. Psobably no department of business in this vicinity shows greater activity than the lumber ing interests. "When logs were $3.50 and $ a thousand, sales were slow and demand limited; now the complaint is that the logs cannot be famished in sufficient quantity to me the incessant call'for build: ing material. The increase in aumber and capacity of mills is noticeable. In our own county are -the "West Shore Mills, the Clat- sopr Mill Co., formerly Geo. Hume's, the Upper Astoria mill and the Westport mill. The first three are taxed to supply the local demand; the mill at "Westport is making a specialty of turning out fine shingles. At Bugby the Co lumbfe River Lumber Co. have put in an extensive plant. Across the river is the Knappton mill -which annually saws millions of . feet of lumber which are shipped to California. Farther up is the new mill building at Deep River, and Montgomery's mill at Ska mokwa. Below is Jos. Smith's new mill at Tillamook, and in Pa cific and Chehalis counties a like activity is displayed. Robt. Miller is building a large saw mill at the raouth of the Naselle, at Hoquiam on Gray's harbor the utmost ac tivity prevails, and the Cosmopo lis mill is busy cutting cedar. Other mills are talked of, and should the present stir continue, which k in every way probable, would find plenty custom. The lumber business both here and on the Sound has been revolutionized in the past few years, in every re spect, more especially in the mat ter of prices both of supplies and lumber. Force of the Wind. The reoent cyclones which have swept-over the Mississippi valley illustrate forcibly how meager all knowledge of them is, and hint the importance of systematically studying their origin, direction and effect. The force exerted by them, as a factor entering into tho calcu lations of the architect and engi neer, should make an intimate ac- otanjie with the laws govern- ig them imperative. The' are fairly familiar with their form and reasonably certain of the causes whioh create them, but of the other and to dwellers in that region infinitely more important part of the question the pressure they are lamentably ignorant. "Whether they will be able to re tard their progress, diminish their 'power, or successfully divert them from objects which they do not wish endangered, are elements of the problem that can only be dis covered by methodical observa tion, covering a wide territory, and taking into consideration the 'topographical and atmospherical iafluonces tending to their creation 'and continued existence. It is a, simple- matter to estimate the force expended after a body "iias been overturned, but when costly bridges are the objects op erated upon, the experiment is anything, but economical. This - plan will only give the force nec essary to do the work, but the amount in excess can of this can yosly be guessed at. To illustrate . .this: A locomotive was overturn ed in 1871, the calculated maxi um,foree required to do this be ig'93 pounds to the square foot; the wind exerted a force greater vtbanthis, but how muchcannot bo X furid. .The fact that a storm passes between two points at a rate that will produce a certain pressure to the square foot is of no assistance, since it is not the aver age but the maximum presure we ?:ftek after. That the whole question of wind pressure 'is shrouded in dark Hess is shown by the differ ence in practico among the - leading engineers of this coun tryrand also among those of other countries, and the allowances ade for wind pressure, whether f3or 50 -pounds to the foot, afeftke rosults'of individual study, ot of combined research. JNem has for its motte: "Pay cash and fear the Lord;" but a contempo rarv thinks the average Texas newspaper editor fears the man with a bill more than he does the Lord. The estimated snrplus wheat for export for the harvest year of 1883-84 is placed at 1,300,000 tons from California and 300,000 tons from Oregon and Washington Ter ritory, which at present appears more likely to be an under esti mate than an excessive one. ' The dudine is the name applied to the female dude. The dudine wears a mashed goose-berry color ed hat and a high collar and her clothes are made to fit tight. She carries a sharp-pointed parasol in lieu of the dude cane, and is often accompanied by an English pug terrior. This is the way the paragrapher of the Bismarck Tribune serves up his personal netes: ""W. B. Shirtz, the brick-hued, copper-toed upright, downright, self-adjustable boomer for Steele, came up yes terday afternoon to mingle for a season in the dazzling whirl of city life." "God has blessed me with wealth," says Senator James G. Fair. Thi, says the Jiee is the rankest blasphemy. The Almigh ty certainty would not waste any of his blessings on a Nevada sena tor. As Uncle Jimmy's wealth was obtained in the cinch game of stocks, it is more probable that Satan has been taking care of his own. An unusual opportunity now of fers to those persons who hanker after titles and social distinction to attain the second highest digni ty known on earth. There is a little island lying to the east of Sardinia for sale at the moderate price of 30,000. It is the prop erty of King Humbert, who is pro pared to award the purchaser the title of King by royal letters pat ent should he so desire it. A young Kentucky couple having eloped and got married were caught up with by the pursuing mother of the bride just after they had retired at a wayside inn. The mother, wishing to detain the pair until the arrival of her husband, went into the room and seized the groora1s trousers, which that happy gentleman perceiving he lifted his head and sheuted: "Take 'em along, old woman, 1 shan't want 'cm again." Mrs. Emily C. Kimball, of Riley, Mich., deserves to go on record as a model American woman. She is eighty-three years of age and has within the last two years knit ted twenty-four pair of socks and stockings and four pairs of mittens, and made and quilted nine patch work quilts, some of them of very minute pieces and intricate pat terns, besides assisting with the house work and doing general sewing for the -fanrilj-. The old lady is a better housekeeper at eighty-three than many of the candidates for matrimony at sweet sixteen are. M. De Lesseps reports favora bly on the proposed Sahara Sea scheme. Soundings 73 meters deep have shown the existence of nothing but sand. The African inland sea might easily be made, with the aid of 100 excavators, representing 100,000 men. M. De Lesseps has met with the best reception from the Arab soldiery and popula tion. On the 3d inst. he arrived at Biskra, having completed a sur vey of the country between Gabes and the Marsh Lakes. He declared that the soil will allow of the excavations necessary to connect the lakes, with the Mediterranean, that the work will present no extraordinary difficulty, and that the concessions asked for with re gard to the forests and adjoining lands will make the scheme re munerative and wholly independ ent of state aid. subvention, or gu arante e. The flurry that an alleged dis patch occasioned in Portland last Saturday indicates the uncertainty of feeling as to Villards actions in the near future. The following pregnant paragraph from the Oregonian concisely expresses the feeling up there: Tf the Northern Pacific should cross at Vancouver and go down to Kalama on the other side of the Columbia, aud the Willamette valley roads should make direct connection from Forest Grove to Astoria, then ships could come to Portland unobstructed by bridges; but would they have much busi ness here?
