Come West, Chester.
It is said that President Arthur
will soon take a trip west, visiting
San Francisco, Yosemite and San
Jose. The tour will be under
taken partly for pleasure and
partly for business. One of the
questions that congress will con
sider next winter will be the Pa
cific railroads and their land
grants, and the president will in
vestigate the subject for himself
should he come west.
It is a wise polic', says an ex
change, for the president of the
United States to visit the several
sections of the country and min
gle as freely with their people as
possible during his official term.
By so doing he can form a much
more intelligent judgment of the
interests and needs of the country,
and be brought into closer sympa
thy with the people, than he would
if he shut himself up closely in
Washington and saw nobody but
the officials and the office-seekers.
"When President Grant adopted
the practice and persisted in it de
spite the attacks upon him on ac
count of it the opposition press
characterized it as "junketing."
It doesn't matter what they then
called it, or call it now. An
observing president can dis
charge the duties o his of
fice better by occasional' get
ting out among the people than ho
can by staying in Washington
throughout his term. Thero is no
law, and there ought to be none,
sentencing a president toitnprison
ment in the "White House or to
the limits of Washington for four
years. The people elect a presi
dent of the United States, and not
of Washington, and such of them
that are not narrow-headed bigots
or partisan prigs are gUd to have
him visit them. Happily the old
disposition to carp at and criticise
presidential "junketing" has most
ly died out. Arthur should come
to this coast if he can find it con
venient to do so. It would do him
good and do the Pacific states
cood. He would meet some of
the warmest-hearted people in the
world, and they, would get ac
quainted with a, president who has
no sham about him, not even to
the extent of a paper collar.
A Washington dispatch te
ports that a gentleman who re
cently talked with Senator John
Sherman regarding the political
situation in Ohio, says: "He pos
itively declines to be the Repub
lican standard bearer this fall.
Mr. Sherman has faith in his abili
ty to carry his state for governor,
but concedes that there is danger
that the legislature will be Demo
cratic, in which event the Demo
crats would secure both the Ohio
senators and the organization ol
the United States senate. In
view of the very serious appear
ance of things for Ohio Repub
licans this fall he admits there
would be an immense advantage
in his presidential aspirations to
be elected governor, but intimates
that he will willingly submit to a
sacrifice rather than allow the up
per house to pass into the hands
of the Democracy." When it
was suggested that :i presidential
candidate from Ohio might be nec
essary in order to carry the state
next year, he replied: "Oh, the
people are getting tired of Ohio.'
and afterward added that what
ever mijjht be the danjfer this
year he had no doubt at all that
the Republicans would carry Ohio
in 1S84.
On next Thursday the grandest
thoroughfare in the world the
bridge between the first and third
cities in point of population in the
United States will be formally
opened b' the President and other
official dignitaries. The construc
tion of this vast fabric stands un
equalled in history. It iso,9S9 feet
in length and So feet in width,
crossing the East River from New
York to Brooklyn; the height of
its center span in the middle of
the river, is 135 feet above high
water, and its total cost is $15,
500,000. It was begun on the 3d
of January, 1870, and was com
pleted about three weeks ago. It
is estimated that -10,000,000 peo
ple will annually cross this bridge.

At a meeting of the trustees of the
Columbia and Puget Sound rail
road company, held in Seattle last
Tuesday, an order was made to

river valleys as soon as the com
pany is tangibly assured of the
$130,000 promised Mr. Villard
during his late visit.
