W Wxt ghiilB &stox&m. ASTORIA, OREGON: "WEDNESDAY.....?.. MAY 10, 1883 Tiic Astoria Laud Grant. Some of our readers may have been surprised when we stated a few days since that the odd sec tions of land along the north side of the Columbia belonjrs to the Astoria land grant and not, to the Northern Pacific grant. These lands are on what is called the overlapping grant. They are within the 25 mile limit of the Oregon Central R. R. (Astoria grant), and are also within the limits of the Northern Pacific. They were decided to belong to the Astoria land grant by decision made on August 1, 187G. If the railroad to Astoria is not built this year, and in conse quence concrress declares these lands forfeited, they should re vert to the government and to the public for settlement and should not be given to the Northern Pa cific. Some will ask us: Can we cut the timber on these lands? Our advice is: don't do it. "We do not think that either the Oregon Cen tral or the Northern Pacific can give you that privilege. The lands are government lauds until the Astoria railroad is built. If 3ou should be found guilty of cut ting the timber on government lands now, not even the Orcjonian could save you. Pointers. The New Orleans Picayune re marks that "common sense in politics would be the same thing as reform." A recent decision in an Illinois court denies that snoring, however loud and obnoxious, is a valid ground for divorce. Queen Victoria, if the Royal family of England should lose their titles by a republican overflow would be plain Mrs. "Wettin. Jefferson Davis is growing oranges on his Missisippi planta tion, and believes the conditions there more favorable than m Florida. The Liano live stock ranch in McLellan county, Texas, contains 126,000 acres of land, and re quired two car loads of wire to fence it. The people of Berlin ate 1,G38 horses in the first three months of this year and all because Bis marck shut down on their hog and hominy. The bridge by which the Uarris burg and "Western railroad will en ter Harrisburg will he nearly two miles in length and will cost 3, 000,000. The city of Newark N. J., has 1,299 factories, with 2G,232 work men. The capital invested is $13, 919,115, and the sales foot up SOC, 234,525. The Pennsylvania iron manu facturers are determined to shut down their mills unless a reduc tion of wages Is conceded by the workmen. Prussia imposes an income tax on cveryoouy wno lias $iio or more per annum, and has just re mitted the tax from 3,740,000 peo ple who earn less. In ten years the wheat acreage of the United States has nearly doubled, 19,000,000 acres being the number reported at the begin ning, and 36,000,000 at the end of the decade. The town of Silver Creek, Col., owes $125,000 for its water works, and there are only about twenty five business men in the place to pay the consequent taxes. They want to "compromise" on $30,000. Senator Plumb, of Kansas, re gards the Republican reverses of last fall as temporary, and is sure the party will win in 1SS4, be cause "every four years it buckles on its armor, does valiant fighting and elects -its candidate for presi dent." The Eureka Nev., Sentinel pops off a social truth in this terse style: "Nine-tenths of the un happy marriages are the result of green human calves allowed to run at large in the society pasture without an yokes upon them. They marry and have children bo fore they do mustaches." Red Cloud has discovered a gold mine on his reservation, and hastens to inform President Arthur that his heart is good and mind tranquil. Just let the noble sav age wait till he has to assess him self a dollar & share I As the poet has beautifully sa;d, this is a case of Lo, the poor Indian, whose untutored mine, etc. An English experimentalist finds that for every pound of mineral matter assimilated by a plant an average of 2,000 pounds of water is absorbed. At the French observatory of Mont Souris it was found that in rich soil 727 pounds of water passed through the roots of wheat plants for every pound of grain produced, while in very poor soil 2,093 i pounds passed through the wheat roots for each pound of grain. The docket of the supreme court of Bosten is to crowded with divorce cases that judgments are sometimes rendered at the rate of ten in an hour. It is said that professional perjurers commonly give the testimon, swearing glib ly according to instructions, and escaping exposure because, through collusion, there is nobody to cross examine them. An efit rt to turn all this business ,over to the pro bate courts, where it could receive proper attention, has failed in tlie legislature. A Nevada board of education recently made an order that no pupil should be admitted to the public schools without a physician's certificate to the effect that the bearer had been vaccinated within the past eight years. Last Mon day week a pert and pretty girl of sixteen presented herself at school without a certificate. "When the teacher inquired for the certificate the girl saucily displayed a shapely limb, on which there was an unmistakable vaccination mark, and asked: "How's that for a certificate?" The teacher thought it a very good one and admitted the girl. According to the London Times the Irish have already convinced the rest of the world that they are unfit to have national indepen dence, and it is quite certain that England has "already convinced the rest of the world" that Eng lishmen aro incapable of ruling them. Why the countiy of Ed mund Burke, "Wellington and Pal merston should be unfit to have national independence would be a curious and interesting subject of inquiry had Ireland ever been per mitted to try the experiment of "national independence" during the last seven centuries. As Ire land has not been permitted to try this experiment, and as the Lon don Times by implication refers the title of Ireland to national in dependence to the judgment of "the rest of the world." it would seem that the most sensible thing England can do will be to leave Ireland at liberty to try this ex periment as soon as possible. At a meeting of the Portland board of trade last Monday, the bridge across the Willamette was discussed. Some resolutions, sanctioning that project were ar gued and finally adopted "by a large majority." It was not a very enthusiastic gathering, being vir tually a concession to Villard, and an acquiescence to the assumption that Portland's railroad interests were more important than her claim to being a seaport. If they will go one step further, and, ac cepting the inevitable, turn their eyes from Tacotna to Astoria where bridges cease from troub ling and the ships can be at rest, our Portland friends will do as much for their own interests as by any other course they may pur sue, besides being consistent in so doincr.
