Dublin, May 14. Joe Brady
was hanged at 8 o'clock tbis morn
ing. A vast concourse gathered?
outside the prison yard in which
Brady was executed, this morning.
A strong force of cavalry, infantry
and police were present to pre
serve order, and there was no at
tempt at disturbance. However,
a wreath of flowers was received
by Brady, to which was attached
a card bearing an expression of
grief at his fate, from Irishmen
living in Liverpool. Brady made
no statement to the jail chaplain
or to the governor of the prison.
One of the last things he did was
to write a letter to his mother.
He carried a prayer book in his
hand to the scaffold, and was
thoroughly resigned and firm.
His body fell nine feet, and his
death was instantaneous. The
number of persons in the crowd
outside of the jail is estimated to
reach 100,000. The throng is said
to have been even greater than
any of those which collected when
executions were public. At the
moment the black flag was seen
over the jail the cry was raised
uHats off!" and every head was
uncovered. The crowd shortly
afterwards dispersed quietly.
Sullivan Victorious.
New York, May 14. Fully
10,000 people witnessed the Sullivan-Mitchell
sparring match this
evening. In the first round Sulli
van knocked Mitchell down twice,
and was himself knocked down
once. In the second round
Mitchell was knocked down twice,
fifoing off the platform once and
hurting his leg. In the third
round Mitchell went down in
Sullivan's corner for the second
time, and was knocked down on
the ropes. He failed to come to
time, and the battle was awarded
to Sullivan. Mitchell was entirely
over-matched.

tor Miller was interviewed this
evening and said: "Though the
Democrats affect to believe their
chance of success certain, I differ
from them. The election last fall
cannot be considered a criterion
in national politics, and the tariff
issue is apt to contravene their
calculations. Every one who
knows anything about politics in
New York, knows that she is as
apt to give a large majority the
other way as she gave the Demo
cratic ticket last fall. It is manu
facturing issues which decide
elections, and I shall be surprised
if the tariff issue does not play
an important role in the results.
I do not by any means consider
the result as a foregone conclusion,
On the contrary, it all rests on the
next session of Congress and its
acts. Until that is ended all
opinions as to the chances of
various candidates is but guess
work.
The yellow fir of Oregon and
Washington Territory, cut in win
ter, the proper season, when the.
sap is down, is very far superior to
the white oak of the Eastern
Coast. It will more than double
outlast it. Oregon fir planking
being also so much longer than
that of white oak, it makes a far
stronger vessel. It combines,
therefore, the two great advantages
of superior strength and durabili
ty. There are vessels afloat at the
present time constructed of this
kind of timber, which have been
near thirty 3'ears in service, and
are still rated as seaworthy.
The Willamette valley and all
Oregon is interested in building
up a commercial city in our own
state either at Portland or As
toria. Every interest of state
economy and state pride demands
that we favor our own state rather
than Puget Sound. For that rea
son we are all interested in the
effects which Villards bridge will
have on wheat and other foreign
ships coming into our own state.

Amos Markel, a well-known and
reliable gentleman, writes us from
Mount Baker, Samish river, What
com county, W. T., under date of
May 7th, 18S3, as follews: "You
are at liberty to publish the fol
lowing facts in your paper: A
fir tree was cut and hauled at
Moan & Monroe's logging camp
on Joe Leary slough, last Satur
day, containing four logs. The
first measured 24 feet in length
and 80 inches m diameter, and
contained 5424 feet of lumber,
board measure. The second was
24 feet long and 71 inches in
diameter, and contained 4749 feet
of lumber. The third, 24 feet
long and GC inches in diame
ter, contained 4,214 feet of lum
ber. The fourth was 32 feet long
and 01 inches in diameter, and
sealed 3779 feet, making a grand
total of lumber in this one treo of
19,1GG feet. This is one of the
largest trees cut in this section
during the present season, and I
took pains to get its accurate di
mensions, thinking it might be of
interest to some of your readers."

Returning home from a party in
St. Petersburg once, Prince Gorts
chakoff missed from the pocket of
his overcoat his pocketbook con
taining 30,000 roubles. He at
once informed the chief of police,
who assured him that the thief
would be quickly hunted down.
Surely enough, before a week had
passed the chief returned to the
prince the entire sum of mone3r
intact, but without the pocketbook,
which, he said, the thief had
thrown away to avoid identifica
tion. This was very well, but a
day or two later, Gortschakoff,
putting on the same overcoat, was
surprised to find in a pocket,
overlooked before, the missing
pocketbook containing untouched
the 30,000 roubles, which he really
had never lost at all. The idea
of restoring the supposed stolen
money to the prince from the pub
lic funds, in the hope of thus win
ning faver for zeal and efficiency,
speaks worlds for the police offi
cer's ingenuity, but presents a
curious phase ,of Russian official
ethics.
A citizen of Paducah, Ky., re
cently became possessed o a lit
ter of pups of an utterly worthless
breed, but, being a humane man,
was averse to slaughtering them.
So he proposed to the Captain of
a steamer that he should take
them up the Tennessee and try
to give them away to the denizens
of that region. The Captain as
sented and told the owner to put
them in the basket, cover the
same with mosquito-netting and
invoice them to some person in
Florence, Ala., at a value of $25
each. This was done, and the bas
ket of pups placed at the foot of
the cabin stairway, where they
were surrounded bjr an admiring
throng, the Captain occasionally
speaking a good word for them.
Before the boat reached Johns
ville erery pup in the basket had
been stolen or spirited away by
the admirers of choice dog-flesh on
board.

Down in the State of Cauca in
the Republic of Colombia there
are many deposits of auriferous
gravel. Most of the small gulches
and ravines have been worked out
a hundred years ago, though more
or less mining is still going on.
Many large streams have aurifer
ous beds and the natives are not
up to turning the course of the
river, so they mine in a peculiar
way. The women take a batea in
their hands and dive down in ten
or fifteen feet of water, scrape the
loose sand and gravel into it and
bring it to the surface. They then
climb on the bank and "pan" it
out. The get all the way from a
few cents to four bits a batea.
Sometimes the men engago in this
work, but it is mainly done by the
women. After a dive they sit
down on the bank and smoke
awhile before going down again.
They teach the children of twelve
to dive down for gold also. Some
times rich pockets cr deposits are
struck.
Arrangements are rapidlj' pro
ceeding for the opening of the
universal fisheries exhibition in
London. The American depart
ment has obtafned 1200 feet ad
ditional space from Denmark, and
goods from America will thus be
exhibited to better advantage. A
prominent feature of the Ameri
can department will be 500 crayon
drawings, illustrating the whole
process of fish culture.
It is said that the Nihilist lead
ers have spread a report through
their agents in all parts of Russia
that the czar has promised to make
large grants of land to the peas
antry immediately after his coro
nation, hoping that their disap
pointment at what they will sup
pose to be a violation of his prom
ise will provoke them to disloyalty
and insurrection.

Mam street in that portion of the city
of Astoria which was laid out and re
corded by John McClure, from the south
sideofAstor street to the south side of
8th street, by grading the same to its

established by ordinance No. 72 of the
city of Astoria, and by planking the
same 24 feet wide in the center of said
street, and unless a remonstrance signed
by the owners of two-thirds of the prop
erty fronting on said portion of said
street be filed with the Auditor and
Clerk within ten days of the final pub
lication of tliis notice, yiz.: Monday,
June 4, 1883, the Common Council will
