nals assume an air of abstraoted
cheerfulness, and talk about possi
bilities concerning-. Fragments
of Villard's utterances of 'SI are
brought to the surface; notably
where he said to Portland men
"you can build warehouses on the
Sound." Like the melancholy
bird in Poe's "Raven.' their song
doth one single burden bear The
Sound The Sound. Even the
erstwhile boast concerning Colum
bia City is no longer heard. The
bridges, onfe near Kalama,the oth
er at Portland are too, much.
The idea of looking within the
borders of their own state and con
ceding the superior claims of As
toria never occurs. "What, Asto
ria, forsooth! Perish the theught:
rather ship up to Walla Walla,
and trundle the grain across to the
Sounfcthat way, than follow the
course nature pointed out and
float the grain down to the sea to
be loaded at a seaport for ocean
shipment.
A Cheerless Life.
A "Wihter in the Nineteenth
Century thus sketches the present
condition of the English laberer:
We find ourselves face to face
with the laborer on $5 a week. He
has but one room for himself and
his family of three or four children.
By self-denial, bv abstinence from
drink, by daily toil, he and his
wife are able to feed and clothe
the children. Pleasure for him
and for his is impossible; he can
not afford to spend a sixpence on
visit to the park, nor a penny on a
newspaper or a book. Holidays
are out of the question, and he
must see those he loves languish
without fresh air, and sometimes
without the doctor's care, though
air and caro be necessities of life.
The future does not attract his
gaze and give him restful hours in
thought; he cannot think of a
time when work will be done and
he will be free to go and come and
rest as he will. In the laborer's
future there is only the grave and
the workhouse. He hardly dares
to think at all, for thought sug
gests that to morrow a change in
trade or a master's whim may
throw him out of work, and leave
him unable to pay for rent or food.
The laborers and it is to be re
membered that they form the larg
est class in the nation have few
thoughts of joy and little hope of
rest; it is well with them, if in a
day they can obtain ten hours of
the dreariest labor, if they can re-,
turn to a weatherproof room, if
they can eat a meal in silence while
the children sleep around, and
then turn into bed to save coal and
light well, only because they are
stolid and indifferent. Their lives
slope into a darkness which is not
"quieted by hope.
A Modern Damon.

modern as well as ancient histerj:

Blackburn to-day pardoned James
Sizemore, who was sent to the
penitentiary from Clay county in
1SS0 for six years on a charge of
murder. Sizemore made no de
fense on his trial, his brother, a
man with a large family, being the
real criminal. Sizemore volun
tarily took the odium and penalty
on himself for the sake of his
brother and his family. Thi
brother dying the other day, con
fessed his guilt and gave unmis
takable proof of the truth of h:s
confession. The governor on
learning the facts, at once issued a
pardon to Sizemore.
The Ruby Hill, New, 3fining
News has entered upon its fourth
volume. Speaking of the event
the editor says: The founder
and first editor of this paper is in
another world, his successor is in
the Nevada insane asylum, and
the third, and presont unfortunate,
is still battling with the world, the
flesh and the devil, and dodging
bullets and soliciting ads. with
pretty good success." Good boy!
The wife of Senator Jas. G-.
Fair of Nevada obtained a decree
of divorce from her hubby last
Friday. She and the children get
$4,250,000, and the San Francisco
residence, and '-Slippery Jim" can
now break all the commandments
regardless of marital ties.
Two men were frozen to death
while making a trip on snow-shoes
from John Day creek, on Salmon
river, over the mountains into Flo
rence, I. T., on May 2d.
In- the case of the State vs. H.
W. Abrams, for the murder of Dr.
J. Gr. Brownlee at Junction on the
19th of last January, the prisoner
was found guilty of murder in the
second degree, and last Saturday
was sentenced to the penitentiary
for life.

er of ex-President Grant, died at
the residence of her daughter Sirs.

heights last Friday.
