No. 39.
A FORGOTTEN SEAPORT.
Ostta was the seaport of Rome,
the Tiber at this point furnishing
no facilities for extensive wharfage
or for vessels of large draught. It
was founded by Ancus Narcius on
a well selected site fifteen miles
down the river. At a flush period
of the Roman power it was the
Liverpool of the world. It was
greater than Liverpool, for it was
the shipping city of the world at a
time when there was no railways
or telegraphs. It was for many
centuries, the point from which
the great Roman expeditions to
conquer, one after another, the
countries of the known world de
barked. From hero Scipio Afri
canus sailed with his fleet for
Spain, and Claudis for Britain, and
by this shore long, long before,
neas had sailed up the "yellow"
tide. To-day this city, throbbing
with the commerce of the world,
floating its triumphant navies, is
absolutely abandoned, desolate
and silent. Human life has left it.
The degenerate Rome of to-day
hardly knows where it is, forget
ting it. It lies under ground and
under water. The fever swamps
that engulf it stretch into dense
forests of stone pine, mingled with
thick underbrush and thickets,
through which roamed the wild
boar and buffaloes. And all this
within twenty miles of the gates of
Rome.
Excavations have been made
which develop not only temples
and baths and public buildings
and detached wails, but long lines
of streets entering into each other,
and in one portion running down
to the once busy wharves. You
can walk on the streets in which
these people walked, and into the
houses in which they lived see
the frescoes on the walls which
their eyes enjoyed, and go up the
stairs by which they ascended to
the upper floors of their dwellings
Going down to the wharf, you will
find the commission houses and
shipping offices. All around you
in vast quantities, lie frag
ments of pottery the re
mains of the vessels and utensils
they used. This pottery is gener
ally coarser, and embellished with
less ornamentation than that found
in ruined Aztec cities of New
Mexico and Arizona.
Being the harbor and port of
Rome, Ostia bore the brunt of at
tacks made by sea, and her tra
ditions are largely those of war
fare and the repulse of pirates.
At least, in the fifth century, she
was utterly destroyed br the Sar
acens, and razed to the ground.
So utter was the ruin that no at
tempt was ever made to rebuild
the town.
When Senator John A. Logan
was at Hot Springs, Ark., getting
rid of rheumatism, he one day saw
a dozen young men pistol-shooting
at a bottle, near the hotel.
Their luck wasn't good, and he be
gan making sarcastic remarks.
Pretty soon they challenged him
to trv his hand at it. No, he
didn't care to. Then they said he
was afraid. "Well now," said he
at last. "I'll tell you what I'll do.
There are twelve of you and only
one of me, but I'll give all of you
a box of cigars every time he hits
the bottle, if you'll give me a box
every time I hit it." They ac
cepted the offer and thought they
had "a mighty soft thing.'g g'Tll
shoot first," ho added, "and if I
hit I'm to shoot again and again
until I miss." Then he loaded a
brace of six-shooters and emptied
them again, breaking twelve bot
tles as he did so. "Want any
more?" he inquired. "No, I guess
not," was the chopfallen reply.
"Then you can send those twelve
boxes to my room whevcr you're
ready," said he, adding in a pen
sive, reflective tone, as he limped
away: "There's a kind of a knack
in these things, I've shot at bottles
before I ever saw Hot Springs."

Unless it had great merit Parker's
Ginger Tonic could not be so popular.
Its sale has spread remarkably every
where, because invalids find it Rives
them new life and vigor when other
medicines fail entirely. Ohio Farmer
Northern Salmon Packing.
Consul, Francis, writing from
Victoria on the salmon catch, says
that last year the fish began run
ning two weeks later thon us ual
but when the fish came, they cam
in myraids. The first appearance
of the salmon was at the north at
Skeena and Naas rivers, and
River's Inlet demonstrating again
that they either come from the
west or north, and not from the
south as generally supposed al
though the time of their running
in the Columbia and other rivers
south, on the coast, is several
weeks earlier. The mouth of the
Skeena is in latitude oi deg.;
Naas, 54 deg. 4.0 min.; and River's
Inlet, 51 deg. 25min. The signi
ficance of the fish coming from
the north becomes more apparent
when it is remembered that Skeena
is about 500 miles north of the
Columbia. At the points above
named there were last year four
canneries, and their season put-up
amounted to 30,000 cases. At
Alert Bay, near the head of Van
couver's Island, the run was still
later, and its cannery only put up
5,000 cases 2,000 less than the
previous season. On Fraser river
there were fifteen canneries in op
eration, the season commencing
and continuing later, and their
put-up amounting to 200,000
cases. The twenty canneries of
the province aggregated 235,000
cases, each containing four dozen
cans, calculated at 50 lbs., giving
11,750,000 pounds, or 5,S75 tons.
They arc rated at $5 per case, and
make a showing in value of ,
175,000. Almost the entire pack of Brit
ish Columbia has been sent to
England, Canada and Australia
absorbing the balance. As to the
labor in these northern canneries,
with the exception of overseers
and adepts at the business, China
men Indians and squaws, perforin
most of the rough work on wages
from S30 to $4.0 per month. The
canneries average about GO hands,
and turn out, if the supply of fish
is equal to their work, from 200 to
250 cases per day. Outside the can
neries are white and Indian fisher
men, who contract to furnish fish
lrom 5 to 10 cents apiece, regard
less of weight, and as they use gill
nets, none less than eight or ten
pounds are caught and they fre
quently run up to twenty and
thirty pounds. The canneries use
all modern appliances, and the
cost of the pack is increased by
competition. The consul states
that an establishment capable of
turning out 10,000 cases, the sea
son costs from 12,000 to $15,000.
At these figures several have
started into business, and after
taking everything into considera-
tion connected therewith, footed i
up large profits at the close of the
season, borne of the canneries!
average the cost of salmon per
case at $2.50 others from this to
$3.50 but find no difficulty in
making sales at $5 per case.
A partnership has recently been
formed between an Englishman
named Gladstone and a Yankee
commonly known as Uncle Sam,
for the purpose of dealing in new
and second-hand paupers. The
senior partner from the peculiarly
advantageous position he occu
pies, is enabled to gather large
quantities of the merchandise .in
Great Britain (where the finest
brands are manufactured) which
is being regularly shipped to this
country where it is picked over
and assorted by the junior partner
and his clerks and furnished in
lots to suit, qualit' guaranteed,
and at reasonable prices, to the
alms houses, jails, prisons, or to
private charitable organizations.
This new enterprise is apparently
meeting a long felt want, and on
Thursday a shipment of 821 pau
pers reached Boston in first-class
condition, and orders from Penn
sylvania, "Wisconsin and Virginia,
were rapidly filled. Those inter
ested will be gratified to know,
however, that there is no danger
of exhausting the supply.

Between two Fires.
A dispatch from Tombstone, A.
T., says: John Lyons, a well
known citizen of this county, on
Friday last, while at work in the
shaft of a mine near Tres Alamos,
had just put in four shots, when,
on reaching the top of the shaft,
he beheld four mounted Apaches
rapidly approaching. As they
saw him emerge, they increased
their pace, and their fiendish yells
relieved Mr. Lyons from all doubts
as to their intents toward himself.
For an instant he was paralyzed
with terror. Being entirely un
armed resistance was not to be
thought of, while escape by flight
was equally impossible. His first
impulse was to hurl himself into
the shaft and be blown to atoms
by the explosion of th blast,
rather than to perish miserably at
the hands of the remorseless fiends
who had him at their mercy. These
reflections occupied but a mo
ment's time; but now the Apaches
were almost upon him. Sudden
ly, with the instinct of despair,
Mr. Lyons threw himself behind a
pile of rock close at hand, and at
the same instant the blast in the
bottom of the shaft exploded with
terrific effect, throwing a shower
of rock and debris high in the air,
which was followed by a dense
volume of smoke rolling up from
the shaft. The Indians, who were
sure of their victim, halted a mo
ment at this unexpected, and to
them mysterious eruption, then,
with a yell, not of triumph, but of
rage mingled with terror, wheeled
their horses and galloped off in the
direction whence they came. Mr.
Lyons could at first scarcely rea
lize that he escaped almost mi
raculously from a 'horrible death,
but as soon as he had re
covered from his amazement,
departed from Tres Alamos,
meeting on the road a party of
neighbors going out in search for
remains, they having seen the
Indians heading in the direction of
the mine, and not doubting that
Mr. Lvons had fallen a victim of
their savage ferocity.
